When Fly Fishing these are my three go-to leader formulas for fishing traditional north country spiders.

Thank you Robert. I love fishing spiders on the swale and tees. Just a couple of questions. How many turns do you use on each line in your blood knot and also how are all these knots on your leader preferential to a shop bought tapered leader then droppers attached with a 2/3 turn water knot? Finally , don't all the knots put the fish off ? Thanks. Have subscribed to your channel.

Hi Geoff, I use a three turn blood knot to attach each section of leader. For me the benefit of this system of attaching droppers is that you can change to droppers instantly without having the take down the whole leader. For ease when fishing, you can keep a few pre-made droppers in your box. So you are not fiddling around trying to tie on flies. It is a very old system which dates back to the victorian times, so I can’t claim credit for it. But I have been using this system for about 20 years and have never had any problems in regard to breaks or spooking the fish. Modern Euro Nymph anglers are now starting to move over to the same system. So, it just goes to show there is nothing new in fly fishing. Good luck for next season on the Swale and Tees. I’m hoping to reacquaint myself more with the Swale this year, just so I can have a quiet pint at Downholme.

Thank you Robert . 3 turns doesn't sound too bulky.. I am going to set up a few of your leaders. Definitely like the idea of tying a few droppers at home rather than on the bank. Here' s to the next trout season after chasing the ladies. I'm 73 but it still is a fantastic buzz and I am always excited to learn and try out new things.

Great educational video. l use a 7 foot rod on my small river, do I need to scale down your formulas to suit my rod length. Many thanks

I occasionally use the 9ft leader on my 8ft cane rod. So it should still be ok on a 7ft rod. Just open up the casting stroke to create a wider casting loop, so the droppers do tangle on the forward cast.

Excellent thank you; would it be disadvantageous just to use Maxima throughout instead of Bayer Perlon?

You can use Maxima straight through.
