It's late season and myself, Hans Kreuer and Blair Daniel, head down South for a weeks fishing and relaxation for three weary Guides. Loads of laughs, triumphs and failures litter a trip that we'll long remember. Great weather, fish eating dries and plenty of candid moments.

I've been watching your videos for a few years now and I've always wondered, why do you beach the fish then net it? Why not net it when it's still in deeper water? No judgment, just genuine curiosity. Thanks.
@mikefsher
@mikefsher 5 лет назад
No worries and good question. The fish here being large and powerful (generally speaking) can make sudden surges even when you think you have them beaten, if you are in deeper water, they tend to use you as a snag and make a run at or around you resulting in either a bust off or worse, a trailing hook in your leg. Just experience of 35 years doing it i guess and working out the best route to success.

On the other hand anyone watching this video should note, That in New Zealand, the rivers are all polluted, the fish are diseased and the locals are less than friendly, quite frankly you would be better off fishing in Montana. Just saying. All right officer I'll come quietly.

An amazing video there Mike. I sat down in front of a few beers and enjoyed what was a lot of humour with the highs and lows of fly fishing, but obviously in a very relaxed environment, after you guys have slogged it out all season with your guiding etc, enjoying a break away in your own time is exactly what the doctor ordered. Look forward to what looks like another part to this story, to be continued...

Hey Mike, I am bought my ticket and am headed to NZ for some fly fishing Dec 22nd - Jan 14th from Texas. I am bringing my 6 weight Scott. I am an avid hiker and would love to spend an entire week hiking/fishing back country. Can you refer me to some info that would help in putting together a back country hiking route? Or is there a river I should simply just follow? If you have any advice many thanks!

My nephew and me fished with Blair last March and had a great time. Caught lots of fish in a beautiful wilderness river. My nephew is a guide in MT and fishes well over 100 days per year, but he'd be the first to admit that the smartest thing we did was to start our trip with a NZ guide before going it on our own. The local fly shops are a great source too.
@chrisc4527
@chrisc4527 5 лет назад
Jarred, NZ fishermen are pretty tight lipped about recommending rivers on the Internet. Sure way for said river to become too busy with all the visitors who read about it. There are some good resources though. www.topomap.co.nz John Kent's book, South Island Trout Fishing Guide Really recommend hiring a guide for a day or two. I went in 2015 and had 5 days with a couple of different guides. Caught fish, inc p.b. rainbow and brown. Four further days on my own and managed only one. Visited US in 2016 and had time with guides on the Snake and Green Rivers. Great guys and had fun, but...The NZ guides were a lot easier to work with, didn't have an outfitter middle man, little or no paper work, no legal disclaimers, super laid back, very reasonable deposits, not sure about cheaper, but the days were longer and I reckon I got more out of the experience. So don't discount a NZ guide based on experience with US guides 😉 Best of luck. Chris

Hello Mike. Just a one question. I noticed, this river is surounded by farmer's land. Where do you get permission from landowner? Because on the fish@game site they sey "Go and ask first for permission". But where? Whom should I ask? How can I know who is landowner? Thank you for response.
@mikefsher
@mikefsher 4 года назад
Martin M each situation will be different but it’s normally fairly obvious if you look around for the main house where you want to fish. There are also often Fish and Game access signs so be sure to use the access points here if available. Do not cross private land if unsure... asking around will normally provide the answers you seek.

mikefsher Hi Mike, you would be surprised how difficult it is to teach the “long distance releases”, i have tried different guides, but no one would show me how they do it. I had to learn the hard way. I have fished NZ for 48 years and always recommend hiring a local guide, not just to start off with some good results but for the pleasure of learning. Thanks for your lovely demonstrations of angling in a lovely country. Harera.

Well done guys...and gal. I'll make sure to forward that on to Coleman. He's still working hard. I'm still hardly working, lol. We had a fantastic time with Blair. At one point he walked across the river to scout the pools ahead and he perched himself on the bluff overlooking the river-- about 30 meters above river left. He came back across the river to share what he'd seen and the embankment gave way, clear into the river, about 10 mins after he returned to us on river right! Talk about unstable rock! Another time a large brown broke my nephew off under a downstream boulder. Blair reaches for the fish under the boulder, the whole time a large eel moving in for the kill. Blair couldn't reach it so he suggested my nephew give it a go, him being 6'3". Sure enough, after practically swimming under the boulder he came up with the 7 lb brown, hook removed, photo'd and released. One disappointed eel, 3 well humored fishers.

Hey Mike, loved the video as always...It was great to hear you and the boys talking about the tactics of presentation this trip. I have been experimenting with downstream presentation of dry flies and slack line casts on my home waters here in Colorado this season with some success...the feeding window seems smaller, but the reward of the take is (to me at least) that much sweeter...thanks again and cant wait to see the next post

@HighcountryFlylife
@HighcountryFlylife 5 лет назад
@@mikefsher agreed as I have certainly learnt that for myself in the past when I started more less as you can bomb a fish over and over with a cast several times in some cases I have found, particularly in the nymph and all of a sudden 13th cast later the fish decides to take. "I use to ask myself why now" considering it's the same fly but the issue was more than likely poor presentations to all the prior casts to the successful one in the trouts eyes..
