Fly Fishing NZ - Tauranga Taupo River

This is part 2 of my fly fishing trip to New Zealand's North Island.
To avoid Cyclone Gabrielle, I moved to the Taupo region (sheltered a bit by the mountains to the East).
I found the rivers into Lake Taupo were high but still quite clear.
As my expectation was for rain and unfishable rivers, this was not too bad.

Don’t let that bother you!! I simply can’t even count the number of times I’ve missed landing the fish because I was distracted by the surrounding majestic scenery, and thus didn’t set the hook in time. In fact, it happened to me again just last week in a stream I’ve caught 16 creek chub. All on a fly rod. I really enjoy watching your videos!! They make me want to go visit these places and cast a line in person. 😇

Hey mate awesome video, what river were you on in the te urewera?

Hi Liam, Thanks for watching! In Te Urewera, I mostly fished Ruatahuna Stream and Mimiha Stream that both run into the Whakatane River, plus a little bit of the main river upstream of Ruatahuna. Had a decent Rainbow third cast in the Ruatahuna Stream. Managed to dodge cyclone Gabrielle and had some good weather!

These fish are probably feeding on lace wing moths, try size16 or 18 deer hair caddis. Can be hard to see these fly but can also be very productive. Good effort.

Thanks for the info! I'll try that next time. Are they seasonal flies or do they hatch all season?

@@ITriedThis Seasonal Feb Mar and sometimes April. You will often see ducks feed from the surface of the water on them.

The fish often get fixated on them and won't take anything else, particularly on the Tongariro

@@terryashburn7304 Thanks, I'll look out for them next time. I fished the Tongariro a couple of days after this video. I'll probably upload a video of that as the last part of this NZ trip.

Hi topperqfishing. There are lots of options! I assume you will have a car. If you want to stay near Auckland, check the Fish and Game information for Auckland Waikato region. I've put some links in the description of this video. Another option would be to drive to Taupo and fish the lake or some of the rivers I've shown in my videos. It's a 3hr drive from Auckland so you would need to stay for a few days to make it worthwhile. Note that you need a specific licence for the Taupo region. You get it from Department of Conservation. For other areas you get your licence from Fish and Game. I've put links in the description of this video. Take some video and upload to your channel - I would like to see it!

Put two nymphs on one weighted one unweighted cheers Tim

Thanks Tim. I might try that. I know that's very common in the Southern hemisphere and the US. I grew up fishing in the UK. Lots of places would frown on using two hooks. Many chalk streams even ban downstream fishing - it's cheating!! I've been abused by someone walking along the bank (not a warden or even someone fishing) for using a nymph downstream on a chalk stream in England (even though the syndicate rules allowed it). I haven't shaken some of the English fly fishing traditions yet, but at least I allow myself to fish downstream! Hope the rivers are recovering where you are.
