Always good to see newer fly fisherman out on the water. That is a great area to fish in Montana. I can tell you need a bit of education however; especially when handling fish. First, yanking the trout on land and letting it flop around will cause the fish's protective coating to be removed. Same things as not wetting your hands prior to handling the fish. Trout should not be taken out of the water for an extended amount of time as you are depriving them of their lifeline...keep em wet and take quick photos/video. Using a net helps tremendously. You should never grab the fish by the gills. That likely caused significant damage to the fish. You also need to revive the fish in the water before letting it go. By the looks of your release, that fish was stressed, had gill damage, and I would bet did not survive considering is started floating upside down. These comments should be taken as a lesson and not a criticism. We all had to start somewhere but having the proper education on how to safely manage this natural resource is important for its longevity. I would suggest taking a fly fishing class from a reputable shop as you will learn a ton of info well beyond my comments. Also, check out Trout Unlimited's website and postings. Other RU-vidr's show excellent technique as well. This is a fantastic lifelong sport. Good luck.

What he said. Your enthusiasm and camera work are commendable. Cringe worthy fish handling from just not knowing better. If you want to be a RU-vid star (and you sure could), set the fish handling example for those thousands of views you would like to attract.

Ditto. A good fish is too precious to be mishandled. Handle with care, wet your hands, use barbless hooks, revive and release them, and some future angler (maybe you) will catch it again!

I was the guy in the video catching the fish and witnessed what a lot of the other comments are saying about the poor fish handling. I would definitely take into consideration what everyone is saying and I hope next time you come it will be better. I know starting out you might not know those things but they are extremely important to preserving the amazing ecosystem we have here!

Thanks just bring your waders it’s pretty flooded and murky but fish still biting. The two fish I had on bit on a dry fly that sank though. So nymphs might be a better option but good luck

Dead fish for sure. Get a "Ketchu Release" and you never have to touch the fish!

Ketchum Release tools do more harm than good. They all but disallow reviving the fish and soon after "release" off the tool, too many fish wind up rolling on the bottom, get the lactic acid buildup bends, and die.

Definitely not a cutthroat. Nice rainbow, no interbreeding.

Next time please bring a net and never bank a fish like that unless you plan on keeping it ( don’t). Also sticking your hands in a fishes gills which you plan on releasing is pretty much guaranteeing death for the fish. Practicing safe handling technique will allow a fishery to thrive and only get better in the future! Also mend your line haha
