Michael Evanko heads to Savage River State Forest in Western Maryland to meet up with Instagram buddies Brad Burbas and Matt Willison. Brad shows Mike some summer morning brookies on a Savage River tributary. Matt joins later and unfortunately the fishing slows for the afternoon. Many of the Savage River tribs deal with low water in the summer but this particular trib was flowing well. The water temps were in the low 60s. Brad and Mike catch fish on a mixture of dry fly, nymph, and streamer patterns. Successful patterns included a custom tied Parachute Adams, a custom Hare's Ear nymph pattern tied by Frankie Schoenfelt, and a white Wooly Bugger. If fishing Maryland, remember you need a fishing license. This video was shot on Saturday, July 28th, 2018.

Great channel. I am getting back into flyfishing. I did it from 87 to about 2006. I am 52 now. I only have fished like 5 times in the last 12 years. Lol. Not wasting any more time. Great vid. Thanks for the inspiration.

Great video as usually mike. My unckle broke me in on fly fishing when I was about 10 yrs. old and yes my fish spot he took me to was poplar lick. that was about 60 yrs ago. It was pretty much a wild virgin area then. When we were about 10 yards from the small crick he had me on my belly low crawling up to the crick. The only thing that got over the crick was the tip of the fly pole. He drilled in to me ...if the brookies saw you it was over. Bows and brownies are that skidish. That was my intro to the tiny mountain cricks in western md. Love your videos of the tiny mountain creeks especially fall and winter time. Tks Bill...yes I am a subscriber.

Love the area up there in western Maryland. Caught a 12 inch brookie in full spawning colors on a trib there. My buddy also lost a 5 lber brown on the main savage on a streamer. Fun times up there. Can’t wait to get up there for a day or two this summer

I love fishing dry flies on streams like this and you guys hit on some nice Brookies. Well done! I like fishing CDC dry and emerger patterns as well. I also use foam humpys a lot that I think is mostly a West Coast pattern. Just got back from the Sierras last week, lightning strikes, mud slides, flooding, downpours and hail storms every day but still managed a few nice ones high sticking weighted nymphs and dry/dropper yellow Sally's and zebra midges down to size 22. Thanks for the cool video. Seems like you always meet nice folks out on the water.

My 3 day video series out there is my favorite of my collection. I hope you enjoyed your time out there. Those brookie streams are awesome. However, fishing the trophy trout section of Savage when water is right is pretty special. Nice video!

Surprised the Poplar Lick was so hard given all the rain recently. The Savage is brutal man. I have been skunked as well. However, when the water is low and around 100 CFS or lower I can pick it apart with Euro Nymphing the rocks. Very humbling, but rewarding when you are running right. I lost a 20 incher on that stream, would have been my PB. That will keep me coming back. Best of luck next time you go out. If you every want a guide for out there hit up PJ Daley. He is AWESOME, and Orvis endorsed.
