It’s always interesting to see what passes as a small stream for people lol. Honestly, up to 50% of the stuff I fish ranges from 3’ to 10’ across. My brother and I stumbled upon a stream last season that was, no joke, less than half a rod length across in most places…but *teeming* with brook trout. IMO it’s mostly about rod length when you start getting into the really small water. We typically carry 6’ 2wts…maybe a 7’ fiberglass 3wt. Shorter rods help you maneuver around in tight spaces. I don’t like getting into the real bitty stuff like 0wt because we usually search with these #16 mini muddlers that are small enough for brookies but too bulky for a 0wt, and probably even a 1wt. Fiberglass is a great option for dedicated, shorter, small stream rods, too…especially if you’re willing to build them yourself. That medium action really helps you execute in tight spaces where my faster action NRX stuff just wouldn’t perform at 100%. This last thing might be a bit esoteric to some people but my small stream rods are all sort of foliage colored (natural colors, greens, etc). I feel like that little bit of pseudo-camouflage is the last line of defense when you’re targeting a fish that’s sitting 5’ away from you.
