Fly reels are fairly simple tools, yet there are enough issues and complexities for them to be a bit confusing. In this video we'll dive into the types of fly reels out there.
On that occasion of the big brown, my great uncle showed me how to line drag in two fingers and hold the rod as well. It's kept me hooked up many times.
I've had quite few Orvis reels and found that the click and pawl reels were always solid. The disk drag reels were not exceptional in terms of drag performance, but they were certainly more than functional for freshwater fishing. Saltwater was another thing as we have to be careful to clean the drag well otherwise it can seize after being left in storage for awhile between seasons. Didn't happen to one of my reels as I'm careful, but I did have one given to me with a totally seized drag. I could not disassemble the drag, it was that bad. Ended up sending it in to Orvis. All that said, for most trout and bass fishing, the pawl reels are quite enough. I have never actually used the disk drag on one of these reels for any more than as over spool prevention.
A very nice tutorial, very insightful on these little things that I’ve never given a fair enough thought on. Thanks for sparking up my thinking cells. I would have loved a closeup on the technical side of the different drag designs to make clear which are more reliable than others. Nevertheless I appreciate your efforts and thanks once again.
I have a methodology to do that, but I need a dozen or so reel companies to send me their products for what would be a potentially destructive testing. :) I won't hold my breath waiting . . . .
hooked4lifeca either have companies send you products or have them loaned to you for reviews by willing audience or selected kind stores or, if it is viable try pawn shops 🤷♂️. Lately and I can’t say if I ever would, have been considering manufacturing designs that addresses these issues along with improvements which the users would find appealing, this is the reason for watching tutorials such as yours in the hope to justify if this might be a lucrative effort......just sharing my thoughts here.
Thanks a lot for the great info you have provided in multiple of your videos. I learned a lot from you so far. I’m new to fly fishing and made a few mistakes buying things that are not needed or just do not match where and what I fish 😜. Please give me your honest opinion about the ST Croix 7.11” 9wt with Orvis 9wt reel and 9wt sinking line, if you were fishing small lakes and ponds for 90% bass and occasionally Carp, I have a 6wt set up for trout which I only fish 3 months a year. Thanks in advance.
I don't know this particular rod and reel, but both St Croix and Orvis make good stuff so I would assume they will perform well. A 9 wt. would be a good choice if fishing for pike and largemouth bass.
Thank you! I’m considering getting into flu this year, I’ve already picked up a rod and reel at a garage sale, and I feel like an idiot playin with this thing! I’m a pretty serious spinning reel guy, but this fly thing in confounding me
Peter - To solve the "How Much Backing' question, I put the line on the reel first, add backing until "full" clipped it, unwind and rewind the correct way for a perfect fit.
Yup, that certainly works, but I'm considering that these are beginners without access to a decent winder. I lived this experience back around '99 when I was trying to do a transfer of a saltwater line and about 200 yds. of backing from one reel to another. The plastic spool I was using to transfer fell apart and dumped the line and all of the backing onto the floor. Worse, I kept winding for a few moments before I saw what had happened, making the tangle much, much worse, It took about two hours of patient untangling and a full exhaustion of my swear word vocabulary to recover it all. With that in mind, I kept it simple in this video.
I got recently a "old" Loop Evotec LW 4Seven from a retired Flyfisher, it's a jewel, better than my Sage Reel. On this Reel, i found a Loop Optistream Flyline and after a few casts, i can say that this line is awesome. I was a poor caster but now im a really good caster, its magic. And the Flyline is 15-20 years old...
The Danielsson made Loops reels were excellent and still are, made under their own name. Those old Loop lines were made by Airflo for Loop. I have some Airflo saltwater lines that are almost as old and I use them every spring in Cape Cod (except this one of course).
You also can buy a bigger standard arbour reel and use it for a lighter line if you want more retrievel capacity. Thats about the same thing. And you then also would have more backingline. Who need a big hole in the center of the reel ? Use the space..
Thank you for the new video I'm enjoying this back to basics of fly fishing my question is adults for a two-part question the first one is are all saltwater reels that big and bulky and are you going to do S-Series on fly lines and what is the difference between saltwater fly line in freshwater fly on it
I already have a video on lines: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ddvQoQpnxxA.html Is that what you are looking for? Saltwater reels can be smaller for light saltwater fishing, but generally they're larger than the comparable freshwater reel to allow for greater robustness and additional backing capacity.
@@communicationiskey- It's a Danielsson FW 4seven, an older model (it's black actually). They still make a similar reel, the F3W 4seven. Danielsson sells directly from their factory in Sweden at reasonable prices. danielsson-flyreels.se/en/. I own ten Danielssons and have used their reels continuously since 2004. Before that they were sold under the Loop brand name.
I have a pfleuger medalist and I’m wondering what the small shiny knob does it’s a screw that goes inside the reel with a head on It that you can turn????
The answer is, "Not much." It adds more tension to the drag spring so the resistance to over spooling is increased. I've had a few old Pfleugers and I remember the tension adjustment wasn't particularly impressive in how much pressure it could exert. Many old style reels use a similar arrangement to add tension to the pawl spring to make the click louder and stiffer.
@12:50, you also need to tell the shop which hand you reel with, otherwise, the line will be coming out the spool from the top rather than the bottom, as it should.
so if I needed an affordable reel like this that can handle 50 pound plus catfish, what would I look for? as a side note, this is for a diy pole project, and oddly enough, the best reel option at this moment would be a fly reel.as long as it can take a real beating.
The Echo Bravo reel is probably one of the best values in a robust fly reel. It's designed for saltwater use so it can take some punishment. I have videos on this reel.
Thanks Peter . Like most fly fishers I never tire of watching stuff like this.....or buying gear that we already have a lifetime supply of. ( flies etc ! ). Sad isn't it...?
I know. :) Think of my poor spouse. I'm not only into fly fishing, but I also like good conventional gear, plus photography, plus video, now the music bug is biting. It never stops. ;)
I'd love to know : which individual claims to have the largest fly collection which they regularly tote around with them on a normal fishing trip ? 300 ..? 500..? I knew one German visitor who never travelled without at least 300 . ! Although , to be fair , Germans tend to be more well organised than the rest of us..
Hi Peter. I've been trying to enjoy this really useful clip. but the adds are driving me nuts. Do you have any control over them. or does You Tube just drop them in randomly? That seems to be an annoying new practice lately. :-(
Normally my videos don't have mid roll ads as they're too short, so I never thought about this video having them. Since this one is long, YT has dropped ads in the middle. I turned the mid roll ads off this morning and I'll leave them off for a few weeks to allow my subscribers to see it without the annoyance of ads in the middle.
@@hooked4lifeca Thanks. I know You Tube is 'free' and I expect a few ads, but some are really terrible. Especially in sensitive music and so on. other than, thanks for the clip-very much enjoyed. :-)
TERRYBIGGENDEN yeah the adds on RU-vid are relentless lately, reason being they are trying to annoy us to the point we start purchasing the add free version. However, I haven’t gotten any adds on this video except for those at the beginning and end of the video.
@@Dizzyish I've noticed that the music videos I listen to have been bombarded with mid-roll, non-skipable ads. I've noticed a COVID trend with revenues and I suspect that this major uptick in ad placement is actually a reflection of more companies buying ads, which means RU-vid has to find a place to fit them.
