Borghetto sul Mincio è una piccola frazione del comune di Valeggio sul Mincio, in provincia di Verona, che ha saputo conservare inalterato il suo spettacolare aspetto medievale di stazione fortificata sul fiume. In questa piccola realtà vi sembrerà, infatti, di essere tornati nel passato, poiché una lungimirante politica di conservazione degli antichi edifici ha fatto sì che non si perdesse l’aspetto unico del borgo, ma che, anzi, le antiche strutture rimanessero in attività.Le origini di questo vero e proprio gioiello storico affondano nella dominazione longobarda della zona che per prima ha riconosciuto la crescente importanza della sua posizione strategica di passaggio sul fiume Mincio. Infatti, per quasi 1000 anni, Borghetto sul Mincio è stato un percorso obbligato per chi voleva spostarsi da sud a ovest nelle terre venete, e nel corso dei secoli persino grandi eserciti come l’armata francese di Napoleone nel 1796, o le truppe piemontesi durante la Seconda Guerra d’Indipendenza nel 1859, hanno attraversato il suo ponte fortificato.
Oggi, il piccolo centro di Borghetto sul Mincio è dominato dalla massiccia presenza del Ponte Visconteo, chiamato anche Pontelungo dagli abitanti della zona, un ponte-diga di 650 metri costruito nel 1395 sul corso del fiume con l’intento di far deviare il Mincio dal suo letto che conduce fino a Mantova. La costruzione è composta dalla lunga diga e dall’imponente rocca centrale dove risiedeva la guarnigione di sorveglianza, e sebbene oggi versi in uno stato di conservazione non ottimale, visitarlo è un’emozione unica, soprattutto se da esso percorrerete il tracciato dell’antica fortificazione per dirigervi verso lo spettacolare Castello Scaligero, situato appena oltre il Mincio sulla sommità di una piccola collina.
