Cased Caddis are found on the bottoms of the stream. The cases made of rocks will be found in slow gravel bottoms. And the Stick builders are found in sandy areas behind branch pile ups. Good luck with yours! Jim
You don't have to be a super fly tier to tie this fly like you do some others. I'm going to tie a few of these. It looks like it would be a real winner on our Ozarks streams. Thanks heaps Jim for posting it.
Hi Sean, You have them in Maine. The caddis will build thier cases out of rocks or twigs you just have to look you'll find them. You'll see them more often in shallower water. Look for twigs on a sandy bottom pick them up and peel them apart. The trout will eat the whole thing and expell the rest after the insect is digested. Jim
Thanks, I'll try teasing out the dubbing next time I tie some up. We also have a lot of oil rig cased caddis I still haven't come up with a way to make that but I'll work on that too. If you come up with it first let me know. Jim
Nice, easy to tie,and effective, they have been put to the test in the Kyll river in Germany(amongst others),and I caught very well with them,I make 'em in different (casing) colours, light and dark, and tease out the dubbing a little with velcro,I also found that shortening the legs a little works for me,but that's a case of personal preference and details of course.Nice fly, thanks!
Seems like a huge hook to me, I have been tying 18-24 recently. Does the trout eat the casing too? I have never seen a cased caddis but I will tie a couple of these to have in my box. I don't look into the bottom of the streams so we may have them in Maine. Who knows, I'll have to ask around. Thanks Jim fine video. Sean
Love your files, Jim. They're made to catch fish, not necessarily to win a (human) beauty contest. Your instruction is simple and approachable and much appreciated. Keep up the good work!
Jim, I'm a new tier and this looks like a periwinkle or that's what we called them as kids. We would gather them and put them on the hook and cast up stream with a very light weight. Cool I will tie up some. Thank love your vids I have them on screen and tie to them, make it easy to learn. Tony
Hi Tony, Thanks for the kind words. It is surprising how many fisherman new to fly fishing don't realize what they have been stepping on all the time. Jim
Thanks for your videos Jim. I've been trying about a year now, and your videos have been my primary online source for learning techniques and tying new patterns. They're clear, easy to follow, and the variety of patterns keeps it interesting. I appreciate your work very much.
