Fly Tying a Foam Wing Caddis (Simple Flies Series)

The exact origin of this pattern isn't really known, but it's one of those that have probably been created by many tiers over the years. Fish this high floater wherever you find caddis flies-- and it's a great top fly on a dry/dropper rig.
Hook: #12-18 dry fly
Thread: Black or to match body
Body: Synthetic or natural dubbing
Wing: 2mm foam
Hackle: Brown or your choice

Little River Outfitters in Townsend, TN tout this NEVERSINK CADDIS pattern as their #1 selling dry fly. I spend April and May fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and if I have 1, I have 100 in yellow. Outstanding pattern to put up at this time of year Matt. BRAVO ZULU !

Thank you Arthur! I have heard of it called a Neversink Caddis. I think Mak ties a couple called that. His are a bit more elaborate but he definitely makes some beautiful flies. :-)

Thanks Edward! I think the main reason for the foam is floatability and to make it more visible. My recommendation is to keep it a yellow (or maybe tan) wing, but vary the color of the body and hackle. I don't *think* the fish see too much of the wing, but it certainly helps me to see the fly. :-)

Missed my morning coffee with you yesterday as I was on the road. Today is the catch up time. I picked up some of that 2mm foam to try some different foam flies. Low floater is a good fly to have on the creeks. That yellow should be good for visibility too. Cheers

Yep, thanks Darren! Sometimes I've gone to this fly at dusk simply because I was having a hard time seeing my standard EHC. It might give you a few more minutes of visibility. :-)

Thanks Johnny! You're probably right with the notch in the wing, but honestly I'm not sure the fish see much of the wing. But oh well, it does make it kind of cooler looking. Albeit ever so slightly. :-)

@@johnnylightning1491 I think the wing does sit down in the surface film a little bit, with the hook point and body just under. But I do know that the fly is pretty visible from a good ways off so maybe the wing is a bit above the surface? I don't know either! I'll have to pay more attention the next time I fish it. :-)

I saw this in American Angler and tied some thinking they'd give me the same luck as Roman Moser's Balloon Caddis. That never really happened, but I found it to be a really good panfish fly.

Nice, straight-forward fly. I think the V is to simulate a more “wing-like” pattern rather than a block of foam.

This fly looks like a great floater for faster water, but what would a pattern look like that skitters well in slow water and also floats well? I find I can skitter a Cadis right after it hits the water but further attempts to twitch or skitter send it under water. I'm thinking this happens because once the fly breaks the surface tension, any design feature that causes drag will send it under upon the next attempt to twitch. One thing that baffles me is why Cadis designs use a down eye hook instead of an up eye (assuming they are available in a dry fly hook), because the down eye would certainly contribute to it pulling under for two reasons...first it tends to sink the first few inches of the tippet and second, it acts just like a lip on a Rapala lure which causes it to go under upon a twitch.

Great note and you bring up some good questions! I think our only options to make a better skittering fly is to use more hackle wraps. And maybe a synthetic body that doesn't hold water might help. One thing I'll often do when I think skittering a pattern might work is to make a couple extra false casts (hopefully off to the side) to dry it a bit more. But even then it won't completely dry and still be likely to "drown" when trying to twitch it on the surface. And sometimes putting it in my desiccant bottle for a few seconds will give it a few more minutes of life.

As I was watching this, I started to wonder if those fishing stores that you recommend do sell this kind of flies. I guess they do? What is the price? Any idea? Nice video btw!

Thanks Otto! Some of the stores do, unless they're more tying suppliers than fishing equipment sellers. Some are both and some are either/or. But... even if a store sells flies, some of these old patterns I tie won't be sold there. Ie, some store may only have a stock of a few hundred patterns. No way they'll be selling an obscure forgotten fly like the Destroyer nymph. But this foam wing caddis? It's pretty popular so many stores probably do have it.

And oh yeah, most flies are $1-2 each. Some of the big fancy streamers can be $4-5 each.

You talked about different colors for the body, what about different colors for the foam?

Michael- sure, you can tie the foam in whatever color you'd like. I'm not sure how much of the wing the fish will see, probably not too much, but I like it in a bright color so I can see it better. But just in case the fish do see some of it, I would probably stick to something like a yellow, light green, or a tan. Thanks for the question!

Hi Matt, You are always looking for fly tying inspiration, and alternate materials for tying flies. I found some natural wool thread, Moire wool, from Nutmeg Hare nutmeghare.com. I bought some and tied some flies and they seem to work out well. lots of colours to choose from, and can be used instead of dubbing.
