Probably the most used dry fly ever! The great Danish fly tyer, Poul Jorgensen, recalled a conversation with Ed Van Put while fishing the Beaverkill, he asked what was the best fly to use. Without hesitation Ed replied with a grin, "It doesn't really matter, just as long as it's an Adams dry fly" Need I say more...

I am new to fly tying and very late to this video and channel. But, I am really pleased with how easy and simple you demonstrated this fly. Thank you.

The feather bender Barry you should do the white Wulff. I mean I can tie it with my eyes closed but I always like your take on it. Plus it’s one fly that flies under the radar but it’s a super productive little bugger.

This was the first Dry Fly/Trout Fly I ever tried to tie. Your way of tying the hackle in the front and working back is superior to what I was doing. And that is why I always watch...

Hackle tie in is new to me....I tie post-wrapped hackles off behind the post but this seems like a great way to keep barbs away from the eye. Thank-you for sharing this technique!

You are fabulous, absolutely brilliant, I am going to start my hackles at the eye like that from now on, winding the thread back up through the hackle will help it last a lot longer. It don’t matter how long or how many flies I tie you, Davie and a couple others always amaze me with the great tips and ties. I have learned so much if not all of my tying skills from watching you. Thanks again for another great tie.🍻

I've been tying for 40+ years and have never seen anyone tie in the hackle in front of the wing and then wind back. Very nice, neat way of tying. Makes for a nice clean head. I'll have to try this. Good tip.

Hi Ed, it's an old hackle technique that seems to have fallen out of popularity. If we don't use these techniques they will disappear...

Poul Jorgensen came to the US in the 1950's and started writing and tying full time in the US in the 1970's. What a career! BTW: Looking forward to your book when it comes out. It will be a Christmas present.....somewhat late, but I think it will be worth the wait.

Hi feather bender, another question for you. I bought a whiting farms brown rooster cape (pro grade) the front of the hackle is a nice color but the back of it is drastically lighter I'm color. Like a light tan. Do you see this as an issue? Is it common?
@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender Год назад
Hi, Thats correct and how it should be, so don't get worried that you have got a dodgy cape, all hackle is like this.

Never seen a traditional Catskills dry fly tied like this. Why tie the hackle in reverse? This leaves a vulnerable point behind the hackle if the thread gets chewed up, the whole thing unravels...
@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender 4 года назад
Hi Cachi, Interesting point. I have tied the Adams in this style for over 35 years and never had one unravel on me or a customer to my knowledge, but who knows. The Adams was originally from Michigan, first recorded 1922 and was tied by Leonard Halliday for Ohio attorney, Charles F Adams. It was regarded as a whole new style of dry fly for the time. It wasn't until the late 1930's that this, now very popular 'new style' of dry fly began to be tied in a more slender sleek style and was then pigeonholed as a classic 'Catskill' pattern and a inauthentic variant of its original.
