One of my favourite Nymph for still Water, also for Rivers, it's also represent a Fry Pattern , Material List Hook size 12 LS ,, Thread Black 8/0 ,, Tail & Dubbing Grey Squirrel ,, Ribs Holo Tinsel ,, 2mm Beads Eye
Mak, this is an excellent pattern! I live in West Texas and do not have ready access to trout waters. So I primarily target warm water species, such as panfish. This pattern will be deadly on bluegills and even bass. Many thanks for sharing so many wonderful patterns that even I can use to catch species of fish where I live. Every good wish.
This pattern really caught my eye Mak! Good call on the flash in the dubbing and that rib. Double duty fly. Huge schools of fry and silvery holographic minnows, we call buckeyes, swim the rocky shore in May where I fish for walleye, perch and smallmouth bass. With that much fish food it's hard to get a bite. But I've tied a similar profiled pattern to your Squirrel Nymph using chenille for the body then X wrapped around the bead eyes. That big head pushes water. Another more successful one I tie on a bigger 8 or 6 long shank (3x). In all black with a short marabou tail, body of fluff from a feather base or poor quailty / short fibered marabou in a dubbing loop and wrapped to the eyes then X wrapped around them. It's trimmed with a bulbus head, a narrow neck, then a "carrot" shaped body tapered to the tail. Sometimes I get creative and make eyes out of knotted peacock herl. When held in a current or slowly retrieved in stillwater its alive with rippling motion. And those peacock eyes sparkle :o) Thanks Mak for all your inspiration over the years!
A nice pattern Mak it reminds me of a grey squirrel nymph type fry pattern I used to fish on a floating line it was on a size 10 long shank hook & all it was grey squirrel Pearl rib & I used to put a black crow wing case on it Mak it was deadly it sorted out the better fish when they were hitting fry along the weed beds you could either slow figure of 8 or short fast pulls it was a deadly pattern you’ve encouraged me to tie some up again Mak 🐟🎣🙂
Nice one Mak! I'll tie up a couple for fishing Bluegills. I use a lot of bead-chain on my flies and noticed that there's often a sharp burr at the hole on the bead so I'm in the habit of giving that area a quick dressing with 400 grit sandpaper. Just a precaution to save my tippet from being "nicked" and weakened.
As always a great little bug. I'd love to see your patterns in wet conditions to see the shimmer of the materials when wet. Thx for maybe considering this. Cheers Dan from Hamburg/Germany
Great pattern there Mak. I’m always attracted to a scruffy bug more and this one fits that perfectly. As always keep on doing what you do dude and thank you for sharing another one with us fans. 😊😊😊
Thank you Wayne, I am sorry I don't understand your question, It's a wet Pattern, basically it will stay in bellow the Surface Film with figure of 8 Retrieve :)))
@@Makflies Hi Mak sorry for the confusion. If the fly has the dumbbell eyes tied on top of the hook shank, would it then be top heavy and “flip” the fly upside down when retrieving it? I understand it will run subsurface but was wondering if the point would ride up because of where the weight is placed? Actually I think this may be somewhat beneficial if it did? Just curious I guess!!!
@@waynejansen3116 The Beads are hollow not really Heavy, yes it does put some weight. this Nymph / Fry has a perfect weight to swim in Sub Surface, even if it's flip it does not make difference, all it's need a perfect retrieve F-O 8 , OR a twitchy retrieve , :))
Mac nice work again. Please tell me what vice you use,I like how fine the jaws are. How much did you have to give for it , if you don’t mind saying. Thank you.
Thanks old pal I’ll give it a look. I’ve been tying almost 40 years ,now on my third vice. I might just treat myself to another one before I check out.
Mac I checked out the Jvice but it seems to be a bit out of my price range. If you know anyone that may have a used one I would be interested in purchasing one. Thanks again for your reply.
How are you fishing this pattern please? And do you have a pattern for hoglice and how to fish it please? I’ve just discovered my local small water is teeming with them.
are you familiar with Fly Fishing Trevor, It's a fresh water Pattern, and I use it on a Point, I don't have a pattern for Hoglice but I will upload soon,
