Tim, Just newly retired at 64 and have been fishing most of my life. Born and raised in the Franklin, Pa. area on the Alleghany. After an Army career, I landed near the Wabash River in Indiana. Smallmouth is my thing. I'm new to fly tying and really enjoy your channel. Have fun with your little one.
+Son of A Buchanan Thanks for the comment, and very cool that you grew-up in Franklin! I was born just south of you in Butler...small world! I'm glad to hear you're making the most of Indiana, and smallmouth fishing is fun! I really appreciate your kind words, and thanks for taking a moment to comment. I hope to see more from you on some of my other videos. Tim
Tim, I found this recipe/video this past summer and tied up a half dozen for stocked PA trout.. I've caught more fish on this bugger than I have on any other pattern. Last night I tied another dozen and will be tying more. By far, the best bugger I've ever used. Let your buddy know. Thank you
You're welcome, Brian, and this has been a producer for so many over the years. Tony came up with a great one here, and glad he shared it with all of us. Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Tim, Tony is an absolutely great but humble guy. He will go out of his way to help any tyer! The Chili Pepper is a great pattern. Thanx for featuring it on your videos.
You got it, Darryl; thanks for reaffirming everything. Tony is definitely an incredible individual, and I'm proud to feature the Chili Pepper on RU-vid. I hope you're almost ready for the Sowbug! Tim
you call it Chile Pepper. We call it The Plumber. I develop this fly about 35 years ago. Named it after a friend of mine who passed away. Yes, he was a plumber. It's tied with or without a bead. also tied with or without an orange collar. It's a great fly for fast or still waiters.
Thanks for sharing, Richard. A few people have tied this fly over the years. I have no clue who tied it first...but I know it works! Hope all is well. Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Thanks for the comment, Tom, and hope to hear from you on some of my other videos. This WB has been a killer for years, and I am sure it will remain that for some time to come. Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Very nice. Just getting into tying and will be trying this one at some point. Really like that you post a materials list which really helps us new tyers.
You stumbled upon a classic, Harrison! Tony Spezio created this version and it's caught fish for people all over. Tony recently passed, but I'm glad his Chili Pepper lives on. Hope all is well! Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Hi Tim, Thanks for posting that Buggar! I tied several of them up last week in preparation for my trip to my daughters place on the Methow on Friday. First set I caught 4 rainbows in minutes, I gave one to my son in law and he had the same results. We went out again yesterday morning and the rainbows were all over it. Grant it the Methow is a catch and release only river and there’s a ton of trout in it the river is heavily fished with guides and the fish are pretty weary. I tried other color schemes and nothing came close to this pattern. We’ll done buddy! Dave Garnetti, Lake Roosevelt WA
Riley, Tony Spezio has told me that this pattern catches an absolute TON of fish, so I'm sure you're correct. I don't know much about redfish or coastal fish, but I guarantee that it will work on smallmouth. Good luck! TC
You're welcome, David, and I'm sure your patterns turned out perfect! Blue, silver, and black??? Love that combo and you'll have to send me a picture (tcammisa@gmail.com). Thanks again for taking a moment to share this. Tim
+Thomas B Evans Great to know, Thomas; thanks for taking a moment to comment. The pattern has been known to work all over, thus it's a great one to carry. TC
Tim, I like how you lock in that crystal flash....I always pick up a few pointers or ideas ( maybe SHORT-CUTS ) from you. Thanks, Bob ( thats spelled w/ one O )
OK, Tim. I'm going to tie a few and see how they do on lower White River down around Cotter, Arkansas. I'll use # 10 or # 12 200R hooks. Been having good luck with the English Purple Spiders size 14, at Roaring River State Park in Missouri, but don't know how they'll do down on lower White. Will let you know how the chili pepper works. Thanks for the fly tying tutorial.
Thanks for the comment, and be sure to let me know how they work. The gentleman who created them, Mr. Tony Spezio, lives in Arkansas on the White...so they'll work. ;-) Tim
Thanks for the comments, Sean; I appreciate them. I can definitely send you a picture of the thread stands; just email me (my address is listed above the video "About" section). Thanks again, and have fun tying this fly!
This fly would probably make a better crawfish imitation than the standard Woolly bugger, right? Tequeely has a copper body as well, but with two tone yellow and black marabou tail, and 6 fluorescent yellow chartreuse rubber legs.
Absolutely...though their are some other imitations out there I would try first. Here's one I'd recommend: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wz1wMfxtL3E.html
Your demos are good and informative. Where Can the 020 lead wire be purchased ,and is there a special bobbin holder to accommodate the lead? Thank you.
Thanks for the kind words, Ken, and I'd check with your local fly shop. If none there, here are two Amazon links. Regular .020 lead wire - amzn.to/3iQte0S Lead free .020 wire - amzn.to/30X5stH Regarding a bobbin holder, I simply use mine from the spool now. If you do purchase a bobbin, find one with a large-diameter tube to allow the wire to pass through. Thanks again. Tim www.troutandfeather.com
nice fly, I know what I will be tying tomorrow! Hey Tim, this is a really off subject and odd question but I see two thread stands in the video to your right side and up. Can you either send me a picture or drawing of those. They would fit in my very tight space very well. Again, thanks so much for the pattern
Hi Tim My name is jason arsenault am vary new at tying flys , my question is I live in vancouver b.c and I was wondering is this fly a good universal fly? Because I'll be fishing the Fraser river and it's well known for its salmon run,thx for your time and fantastic videos, I learn so much, you are a god sent to me ☺
Nahla Arsenault Thanks for the message, Jason, and I have heard nothing but great reviews of this fly from all over. I believe that Woolly Buggers using peacock are a little more utilized around the globe, though this one is worth trying. Thanks for your kind words, and I'm glad my videos are helping. Tim
Thanks for the comment, Ryan; many of the wires I use are lead-free, though I have removed many of the original stickers. Fortunately, the amount of lead used in flies is a minimal amount with few (none that I personally know of) documented cases of lead pollution due to flies. TC
Hi Mark, and this one tends to run hook point down. It's a traditional style, and to do otherwise would require you to substitute a jig hook or tie a knot that encourages the fly to invert. Thanks for checking, and you picked a great fly! Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Tim Cammisa so glad I found out about this fly. It always succeeds if everything else fails. One of the buggers has caught so much fish that it looks beat up.
There are a number of different companies selling a copper chenille now, though I don't believe they are the exact match to the one used in the video (which is from 2013). That material is no longer being sold, thus I would experiment with the ones out there and determine which works best for you. For the size, I would start with medium if you are tying in the size 8 - 12 range for trout. Good luck! Tim
