Thanks for viewing this RU-vid fly fishing tutorial, and I encourage you to view my additional videos at the following website: www.troutandfea...
During this fly tying tutorial for the Holy Grail nymph, I give a brief background on how I came across the pattern, followed by the materials and tying procedures. The Holy Grail, which I first came across on the Orvis website, is a no-nonsense pattern that can be utilized for both caddis and mayfly nymphs. It can easily be fished in a "dry-dropper" situation, and colors I recommend aside from this olive pattern include tan, brown, and black. If you decide to alter this pattern and find your variation more effective (or simply unique!), be sure to share in the comments section below.
Featured in this fly tying tutorial are the N204BL hooks from Allen Fly Fishing; you can find these hooks and many others at the following link: www.allenflyfis...
If you have any thoughts or questions based on this video, please leave them down below in the "Comments" section or you can email me: tcammisa@gmail.com
Fly fishing for beginners can be difficult at first, thus be sure to stick with it and ask others for advice. I'm a little late to the party here, but I have been fishing around for a possible dropper fly to use off a dry fly and came across this fly in a variety of places along the way, but thanks to your commentary regarding your own experience, it both gave some reinforcement and encouragement to tie and try it for that purpose. I'm speaking as some one who hates to nymph fish, but is looking for an easier way to renew this type of fishing to my experience. Your tying is terrific, but I am very glad that you go out of your way to add meaningful commentary. It explains a lot. Thanks.

Tim, I agree about the "more sparse" collar. Too often, tyers add too many wraps and form far too thick of a collar. The sparse collar moves much more freely in the current as opposed to a heavier collar, which tends to compress around the fly. Very nice, tutorial!

George, great comments for sure! You really have it right that we could all live with just a few materials....but why?!?! With that said,keeping it simple is a great approach, hence this pattern. As always, thanks for joining in the conversation, and I hope all is well. Tim

Hi Tim, Thanks for showing us folks how to tie this fly. This fly is available in the UK to buy, but I tie!! I have tied the fly in sizes 10 - 14 in olive and grey hares ear, I have to say they are a killer on my local stillwater venue Broad Oak, Malvern. Worcs.

Nice , I tie a version of this but use black soft hackle no wing case , lethal on the Madison as an emerging caddis . I agree with you on the soft hackle less is better . Show a picture of this fly wet and people will see why :-)

Well I find a lot of commercially tied flies are over tied to some extent. I don't know why that is other that its a marketing thing, or from my own tying, I tied commercially for a time, it takes less time. I have also come to the conclusion that if you think you have enough material, cut it down to a 1/4 of what you think is enough and its about right. For the last 20 years, the sparser the fly the better they work, we as fly tiers like to make the flies look good to our eye, while the rainbows Browns and brookies see things different. I am also convinced that I could get along just fine with some partridge, hare's ear peacock herl, and pheasant tail for my trout fishing. But were is the fun in that, Right now I have two closets full of feathers and stuff. I grew up on Joe Brooks of Outdoor Life, compared to what we had in the 1960's we are really in a Golden Age of flyfishing. Never mind about sharing tips and tricks and patterns on you tube. enough of this, lunch time is over and its mothers day and their are more trout to catch.

Nice fly, I was glad to hear I am not the only one who goes lots of places in search of a different fly. I have been meaning to ask, Where did you get that great cup? I broke my favorite coffee mug and am searching for a new one. You have it and I want one.The only issue I have with this as a caddis is the taper goes from thick at the back to thin at the front on caddis patterns. The fish may not know that, who knows. All the best to you and your wife. Sean
@TimCammisa
@TimCammisa 10 лет назад
Thanks for the comments, Sean, and the mug was from my parents YEARS ago! I will look over the set and see if there are any clues, though I know that the Fly Fishing Museum in Roscoe (NY) has always had some great ones. Great comments regarding the body, and I agree that more than likely, the fish will probably overlook that, unless fishing in a high-pressured area. Thanks again, and I hope all is well, Tim

Very nice video, Tim. I too like the sparser soft hackle. Looks great!! I would like to know your thoughts about the Stonfo bobbin. Thank you.......
@TimCammisa
@TimCammisa 10 лет назад
Thanks for the comments, Kevin, and glad to know others like the sparse hackle, too! Regarding the Stonfo bobbin, I really like it. I have around six of them, and they are easy to use. I have my main spools of thread in them, and the tension setting is extremely easy to adjust. I also like the feel of them in my hand, since they have just one post to hold. There are three sizes, and I prefer the small and medium ones. Thanks again as always. Tim

What material would u recommend for the legs that could replace the Hungarian partridge if any?
@TimCammisa
@TimCammisa 8 лет назад
Hi Mason, and I would recommend any soft hackle from a pheasant, grouse, woodcock, etc. There are MANY additional feathers out there that can be used, and don't hesitate to try them. I tend to like those with mottling, thus would steer you in that direction. Do you have one in mind? Thanks again. Tim
@MsMsqui33
@MsMsqui33 8 лет назад
+Tim Cammisa thanks Tim, I've got an abundance of mallard flank wondering if that could work I haven't dabbled much with soft hackle. I'm not sure if mallard flank is even considered soft hackle
@TimCammisa
@TimCammisa 8 лет назад
You got it, Mason, and the flank tends to be a tad more rigid and is used mainly for tailing. Because of the stem of the flank, it will build-up quickly when wrapping and can be difficult to use that way. I would suggest trying some other types of feathers, and maybe a great one to start with would be Hungarian Partridge. If you want to email me any specific ones, feel free to and I can also suggest a few places to look. Tim

How do you like the new vise?
@TimCammisa
@TimCammisa 10 лет назад
Brooktrout Angler, I am liking the Stonfo Kaiman a lot for the flies that I tie (mainly trout and bass). I have tied down to size 24 and as large as 2 with it, thus am very happy. Are you thinking about getting a new one? TC
@seth1530
@seth1530 9 лет назад
do you think you could substitute the holographic, with peacock herl?
@TimCammisa
@TimCammisa 9 лет назад
seth davenport I typically don't recommend that because peacock is relatively fragile, thus will undoubtedly tear while fishing this pattern. Was there a reason why you wanted to go with herl? How about a normal wire ribbing? TC
@seth1530
@seth1530 9 лет назад
Tim Cammisa Hey thanks for the suggestion! I wouldn't have thought of wire, i was just trying to substitute the holographic color since i don't have that type of tinsel, I've only just now started tying! Thanks, tight lines!
@jkgkjgkijk
@jkgkjgkijk 3 года назад
Hey bud, five years later here😷, if you wind your herl around the thread, a few turns, then wrap, yes you can. You won't be using a Holy Grail any longer though.

Any chance you would put out a video review of your new Kaiman Vise? Also, where can you purchase this vise? I see one on Ebay, but they want $40 to ship it to me from the UK? Thanks TC.
@TimCammisa
@TimCammisa 10 лет назад
Thanks for the suggestion, Brooktrout Angler, and I am looking into a review of the vise. I contacted Stonfo to see where they recommend, and currently, they have no distributors in the United States. They recommend buying from Ebay, or completing a Google search, which will then lead you to some European businesses (such as Veniard). I hope this helps a little! TC
