An easy Bass Fly Pattern created by Lefty Kreh, the Red & White is a general baitfish pattern that at one time Lefty called "the single most effective underwater fly that I have ever used for bass."
Hook: #4-8 wet fly
Thread: Red
Tail: Six white hackle feathers
over two strands pearl Krystal Flash
Body: Red, white, red hackles
This pattern can be found in:
Dick Stewart's, "Flies for Bass and Panfish," 1992, amzn.to/3aGpFs1

Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible. The channel is named after one of my western Maryland homewaters, the Savage River. I've been uploading at least three new videos a week (usually Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday).
Thanks for stopping by. Please let me know in the comments if you have any tying tips you would like to share or if you have any patterns you would like to see tied here.

Ok, I have to tie this one at some point. Being a Hoosier my whole life, red & white. Now being Wisconsin, Badger country, red & white. Being a Bass fisherman, knowing of Lefty Kreh, looks like red & white again. Also picked up a couple book ideas in this video. Thanks once again Matt. Great looking fly.

Back in the mid 1980's, Lefty and I were talking about this fly for Currituck Sound bass. Another fly he suggested I tie was what he called the Marsh Hare. Size 1 Mustad 34007 hook, lead wraps to get it down, mono weed guards, gray hair rabbit strip for a tail, and webby grizzly hackle from the hook bend to the hook eye. Cast the fly into openings in the marsh, let the fly sink to the bottom and retrieve with slow, short hops. Let me tell you, it worked!!
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 2 года назад
That's a great story JB! I love when folks leave comments about their experiences with the legends of our sport. And Lefty was certainly legendary. I've never heard of the Marsh Hare though and Google isn't being much help here. I can envision it from your description though. It sounds like a Lefty Kreh pattern. :-)

There are a lot of fancier "new" patterns out there, and I am guilty as anyone for abandoning older patterns like this one. BUT - there was a day a little while back when I canoed along the shore of Tridelphia with basically this same fly, but tied on a keel hook. The white saddles extended well beyond the hook point and made the fly almost weedless. The thing hovered because it was not weighted, and hopped over submerged branches when stripped, and caught several bass! I should be sure I still have some... Thanks Matt!
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 3 года назад
Thanks Pete! I too am guilty of tying fancy flies when not completely necessary. Sometimes it's just fun. :-) But yes, I do see why this could have been an effective bass fly for Lefty. If nothing else, the red and white will probably trigger a few territorial fish!

I read about this fly somewhere a couple of years ago but could not find more than maybe one picture of it. I tied mine pretty much the same except I used a matched pair of schlappen for the tail. I like the pattern. Simple, easy to tie and Lefty says it catches fish so it' gotta be good. Thanks for the only video I have ever seen on this fly. Keep the good stuff coming.
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 3 года назад
Thank you Johnny! And yeah, Lefty Kreh knew a thing or two about catching big fish with a fly rod. I haven't tried his Deceiver yet, but there are dozens of videos out there on that so I'm in no rush. I like tying patterns that don't already have a lot of other videos out there. :-)

Nice tie. It makes me think of a Bivisible & an early saltwater fly called the Seaducer by Homer Rhodes. I think this fly & the Seaducer are in one of Lefty’s books of saltwater flies. Dick Steward did a series of books on trout & others types of flies in the same format as the one you used here. Definitely worth getting if you have learned basic techniques & can follow pattern recipes. Each pattern is shown with a good photo to model the fly.

Yeah, it does look a bit like a bivisible, but with a huge tail. I've never tied the Seaducer but have seen it in a few books. I'm sure a big bass would go for some of these saltwater flies. :-)

I also tie this pattern as a popper for fresh an salt water. Sizes #2 an 2/0. It works. I have a suggestion for something that is very important for fly tying. Lighting. Lots of types of lights work. The right bulbs make a difference... "daylight" bulbs or true color rendition bulbs are easier on the eyes an show colors as they are. Cost a few bucks more a bulb but are worth it.
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 3 года назад
That's funny... one of the very first cork-bodied poppers I tied had this tail, and red/white hackle between the cork and tail. That was way back in the 1980s. And I love your idea about a video on lighting. You are the first person to have mentioned it, but it is a GREAT idea. Lighting is so important, and probably too many people don't think enough about it. Thank you!

You should add a link of where to get the hooks you use or recommend where to look. in my area it’s mainly spinner gear. I’ve got a 2 hour drive to the nearest fly shop. I’ve been tying with off the shelf hooks at Walmart and my flys are strugglin’ lol. I’d like to try to tie with more accurate style hooks
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 3 года назад
Michael- the most economical hooks I've found are the Saber ones available at the Fly Shack. Usually $6-7 for a pack of 100. Yes, Tiemco, and Mustad and Daiichi are probably better quality hooks, but there's nothing wrong in starting with these more economical ones. I love their dark finish ones, and they have a good selection of barbless as well. I still tie on them all the time. :-)
