Great video! Thank you for all of your contributions to the Fly Tying world and for helping the new guys as well as showing some of us old folks (Dogs) some new tricks!
Jim, great idea! You solved two problems at one time. You can eat and recycle at the same time. I always said that fly tiers are the craftiest people I know. Give them a problem and they will solve it. I'm sure you will get great use of you bobbin holders and you color coded them too!
Geat job making use of things most people would toss in the trash! It showed the passion you have for fly fishing and not being wasteful thanks for the instructions. Best regards ...JOHN in new haven
yes I was thinking the same thing. also I was thinking that stir straws would work as well. Now I just need to order some Chinese.. Thanks again Jim, great videos.
OK...using a thread bobbin to create a thread bobbin is like defining a word by using the same word. Great video. Thoroughly enjoyed watching and will give this a try.
thanks Jim I just made one from a large paper clip. It is a little short but it might work for small hands, I can't wait to try it. I will let you know if it works
Great instructional video jim...........I`ll be on the lookout for some suitable wire and have a go. Over here in England, our Chinese takeaways come in foil or plastic tubs and paper or polythene carrier bags. It shouldn`t be too hard to find some good strong wire though.
Hi , I am a big fan , I love the channel ,and I cannot thank you enough for the effort you provide for the sport .I have a question : when it comes to euro nymphing , how do you adjust the tippet length vs the water depth ? Many subject matter experts claim if the fly is touching the bottom , the fish won't touch it . Can you please elaborate or make a video .Your help is always appreciated .
When nymph fishing I don't do the Euro Nymphing. All the guys I've seen doing it use a bright section (orange or chartreuse), on the leader and always fished on the bottom. That being said if your flies are not on the bottom the fish wont eat them.
One way to try and combat this is to take a 16" piece of Kevlar thread and run it through the bobbin, even try to spin it on the bobbin. Another way is to use glyserin on dental floss in the same manner. glyserin should be available at any drug store. You may also try using a hollow Q-Tip these are the blue stems when you make your holder, you can also melt the ends (very slightly), to form a roll on them. Good Luck let me know how you make out.
I have a dozen of these at least. You may want to experiment with these. I used the Blue hollow Q-Tips for the barrel also, that worked pretty good too.
With one of the most critical aspects of fly tying being thread control...why? Just go buy em'. I probably have 30 of them with my two favorites and best the Ekich A and S models. Never scrimp on tools.
+Mark Patenaude I won't disagree with you, but there are many guy's and kids out there that don't have the resources to buy everything top of the line. Some of my homemade bobbins are are favorite.
