Here's how I make my origami wings:
First select a suitable feather, the big feathers right at the bottom of a rooster neck are ideal. strip one side of the feather and cut out a section twice as long as the finished wing plus some margin. The same reasoning applies to the length of the barbs.
Make a crease in the middle of the feather and preen the barbs so that they line up nicely and one side overlaps the other. Hold the feather at the tip and draw down the barbs, pinch right at the base of the wing. I tie in the wing directly so make sure to hold the formed wing in the left hand if righthanded.
Hold the wing as snug to the hookshank as possible and make a couple tight wraps, think pinch wraps. It helps immensely to have a thin gsp thread, I tie 100% of my flies with it.
