Fly Tying the Meadow Grasshopper (Polly Rosborough Terrestrial Pattern)

At first glimpse, this looks like a standard caddis dry fly pattern, but in a size #8-10, it makes a great terrestrial hopper pattern. An easy to tie classic from the legend Polly Rosborough.
Hook: #8-10 dry fly
Thread: Gray
Rib: Ginger hackle, trimmed
Body: Cream yarn
Underwing: Yellow bucktail
Overwing: Mottled turkey quill
Hackle: Ginger and grizzly

Hi Matt,got a neat story about hopper fishing.My good friend Bill Fuchs was out in CO.He seen a lot of hoppers,so he tied one on.Was sweeping the top of the grass with his fly rod ,hoppers went into the stream.Bill was catching some huge browns.Warden gave him a ticket,said he was chumming.I like fishing hoppers with an ant dropper.Have a great day Matt.

That is funny Ken! I almost always have a dropper with my big hoppers too. Ants are pretty good but also just a simple little zebra midge.

Nice tie Matt. When I tie these I will twist the hackle for the rib and body yarn together and then wrap up hook, no need to give a hair cut this way and makes it a little more durable. Have a great weekend. 👍

Layton- that's an outstanding tip! I'm going to tie a couple more trying that. And BTW, I just got a Stockard order in the mail. I couldn't believe how expensive Daiichi 2441 salmon/steelhead hooks were. But they do look good!

Great hopper. Definitely easier than the Dave’s Hopper. I like the looks of this fly. For a first tie you did an incredible job. For a split second, I thought we had another laughing intro 😂. Great video buddy. Thank you Matt.

Nice tie Matt, I like the tent wing. Yeah, Peter Charles is a gold mine of information on a lot subjects. I like his ideas on streamer hooks and tube design for tube flies. Matt what coffee do you drink, you're a very happy morning person! Thanks for the lesson. Cheers!

Ha! Thanks Joe. As for coffee... I'm always recording at night. Usually after the wife and kids go to bed, 9pm to midnight is my free time. And if I haven't started editing by 11pm, it's going to be a late night. :-)

And BTW Joe... I got my Stockard order today. Lots of salmon/steelhead hooks. I couldn't believe how pricey these things are. Eight bucks for a pack of 10 of these Daiichi 2441?? Holy cow, but they do look good. Can't wait to tie some more of Shewey's steelhead flies. :-)

@@SavageFlies My free time is around 4am to 7am or until the dogs wake up, which is usually around that time ;o) and of course now. Great news on your order, I told you they were pricey but elegant. The Mustads are ok price wise, always good quality. Then there's "house brands" from different online shops. I don't know if Stockard has their own salmon hooks. The Fly Shop has them 100 for $8, 2/0 to 10 I think, w0w! Sorry I just looked it up. Umpqua U series 10 to 11 fish skins for 25 in #4 and #6. You'll still have fun tying on them. Have a good w/e, two days of 90+ temps here. (:o/.' , '

Wow Matt. Wished my first crack at a fly turned out that good. Typically my first attempt at a dry fly comes out looking no where near what they are supposed to look like but I’m having fun and that’s what it’s supposed to be. I even might get lucky and get some trout to take it. Take care Matt.

Neat little hopper pattern matt i tie and use daves hopper and a foam hopper that i tie .going to add a few of these guys to my hopper box .👍

You can easily reposition the body into it’s proper place by using an empty pen tube or similar! Slide it over the eye and push down against the shank and slide the body back to your desired location away from the eye. When the body material is back where you intended, put a couple of thread wraps over it to keep it there and carry on! It has happened to me and that’s how I fixed it! Looks like a good pattern! Tight lines!

Thanks Edward! My first choice for hoppers is usually one of the foam bodied ones. I think they're easier to tie, and you can put a little flash in them. :-)

Oh yeah Bob- Dave’s Hopper is my nemesis. Up there with the Humpy. Now there is a Joe’s Hopper which is a bit easier than Dave’s so maybe I should try that. 😁

That's a really decent hopper pattern. It would do in any warm climate.I this if splayed wings could be managed, it would be superb.:-)

That's a pretty good idea Terry. But if I was going to try and splay the wings, I think I might try hackle tips over some kind of quill. But hmmm.... that might be worth experimenting with.

Looks like a good floater. I’ve had great success with the Mop Hopper that Tim ties, but I will definitely give this one a try.

Ha! Check out Layton's comment. He had an idea how to wrap the palmered hackle at the same time as the yarn and you might not have to give it a haircut at all. :-)

Been looking for a non-foam grasshopper pattern and what do ya know...my boy Matt comes trough with a pattern from one of my heroes! Matt is their any way you could do a short video on the folded or "tent" style turkey wing? Or the "rolled" turkey wing as done on wet flies also? This technique applies to a lot of patterns and I cant find any info on the proper way to do it.

Ha! Thanks for the note Shane. I'll put this on my to-do list. You're on the cork board now my friend. :-) Tent style is easy. I'll have to do some research on the "rolled" turkey wet fly wings. I've seen rolled mallard flank and teal, but I'm not sure about turkey...
