This fun variation of the classic Woolly Bugger can be found in the Federation of Fly Fishers Pattern Encyclopedia. Vary the colors and you can call it a Red Belly or Yellow Belly. However you tie it, this standard bugger pattern will catch fish.

Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible. The channel is named after one of my western Maryland homewaters, the Savage River. I've been uploading three new tying videos a week, with the occasional extra video on other days.
Thanks for stopping by. Please let me know in the comments if you have any tying tips you would like to share or if you have any patterns you would like to see tied here.

In his book, "Tying Better Flies," Art Scheck makes the point that most flies fall into what he calls, 'categories of construction.' You can vary the materials a zillion ways, like with this "Orange Belly,",,, but its still just a construction job variation on the Wooly Bugger. I always pick up a little something from your vids, even if its just a reminder - this time is the stacking of components to be used. Thanks David Palmetto Fly n Fish

Same here Jim, and you know I'm using my 3-wt more often than not so these small streamers can be some fun fishing with light tackle. Nothing like a 14-inch slab on a 2 or 3-wt fly rod. It feels like a monster. :-)

Yes indeed! I was talking about this a few months ago with some crazy Cactus Bug that has worked for me, for some unknown reason. It's a simple, ugly bug that looks like nothing alive in nature. But I guess the fish think it looks tasty. :-)

That one is close to a Halloween leech pattern I have used (same colors anyway). I think I like this pattern even better. Once I fished the Halloween leech like a streamer, with two or three sharp retrieves, then a pause. That’s when the trout nailed it. Thanks Matt for your great instruction. Blessings my friend.

Good Morning Sir Matt, now that's what I'm talking about, every time I've used a two tone buggar or postal pete they just work and catch alot of fish. Now thanks to you I can start the production line lol 😆. Have a great weekend Sir Matt.

Fun tie Matt. Fun with the belly name and the color of it. Silver gray for a Lead Belly. Gold or amber for a Beer Belly, etc, etc. :o) I like the way you tied the hackle too. As far as I know that's the proper way to hackle the Woolly Worm. I use low grade cock neck, like India or streamer necks, to hackle a lot of "wet" flies. Thanks, this was a nice break for today.
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 2 года назад
Thanks Joe! I actually tried this with a grizzly hen hackle first and the fibers were way too long. So I ended up taking one of the lower quality feathers from a good dry fly cape. I love your idea for a Lead Belly fly though. If nothing else, that would be a great name. :-)

Good morning Matt. Looks like a fish catcher. Few of those in some different sizes and colours will be a good addition to my fly box. Speaking of fly boxes I had to pick up a couple more. Not sure why 🤔
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 2 года назад
Ha! I'd be scared to count how many fly boxes I have right now. I've resorted to just putting my excess flies in those plastic compartmented containers. And hey, I haven't forgotten that I'm going to send you a mug. I just can't do it from my online shipping setup. I have to actually go to the post office and fill out a customs form. But I'll get to it someday... I promise!
@Jd-yc3gw
@Jd-yc3gw 2 года назад
@@SavageFlies Those plastic containers will probably be what I’ll do but I really like the looks of flies in a fly box. Im not worried about the mug I’m sure you are busy between answering emails, making videos and what you do in your spare time. 😁 I’m sure you’ll get it here. Take care Matt.

That bug looks poisonous, as are most brightly colored things in nature. But I bet it catches fish! Keep the good stuff coming Matt.

Hi Matt! Thanks for the video. As you were tying that up, I was thinking about the hackle breaking and the fly falling apart with one bite from a fish. Would it be better with a black wire rib cross wrapped to help hold everything tight or is that overkill?
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 2 года назад
It would definitely be more durable with a wire counter-wrapped to the hackle, but I'd think that's probably overkill. Now if I was using a pattern like this in a one-fly contest, where I needed it to hold up for potentially 20+ fish, then it might not be overkill after all. But honestly, catching so many fish on one fly that it starts falling apart on me so rarely happens that I really don't worry about it. But also, I'm primarily a trout fisherman, and a day with a double-digit fish count, of mostly fish smaller than 10 inches is a good day for me. :-)

For a beginner would you recommend learning and practicing a few flies and getting good at those or trying a lot of different ones?
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 2 года назад
That's a good question Dani and really you could be just fine with either approach. If you were to pick three patterns and tie each dozens of times, you'll be doing pretty good by the time you're done. If I were to do this, I'd pick probably one fly in each category that you might fish. Ie, one generic mayfly nymph (hare's ear or pheasant tail), one bucktail streamer (maybe a Blacknosed Dace or Mickey Finn), any dry fly such as an Adams or Light Cahill, then maybe a winged wet fly. The theory here is that after tying a couple dozen Mickey Finns, you'll be pretty good at doing a flat tinsel body, and stacked bucktail wings. And after that, you'll be able to tie all kinds of bucktails. One problem with this approach though, is that it can be boring and you might quickly get tired of the few flies you're tying. And then you could end up with 2-3 dozen Pheasant Tails, which might be more than you'd go through in five years of fishing. So my recommendation would be to do a mix, but don't tie so many of one pattern that you get too bored with it. Maybe tie 6-12 of a pattern and then move on to something else. They may not be perfect, but ehh, who cares? Go back to patterns you've already learned later and redo some. They're bound to look better the next time around! Case in point- I found an old fly box of mine recently, that had some Prince Nymphs I tied maybe five years ago. By my standards today, they looked terrible! Totally out of proportion, bad hook choice, crooked wings, you name it. But I remember using them back then, and catching fish with them. :-) So whatever approach you take, just have fun with it!
