Hackle: Hungarian partridge

Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible. The channel is named after one of my western Maryland homewaters, the Savage River. I've been uploading at least three new videos a week (usually Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday).
Thanks for stopping by. Please let me know in the comments if you have any tying tips you would like to share or if you have any patterns you would like to see tied here.

Oh yeah Clyde- I figured you'd like this one. I almost mentioned you in the intro, saying this one is for you! I might tie up a whole box of these soft hackles for the spring. The P&G, P&O, maybe a few starlings too.

Great tie as always buddy, like this pattern. Gonna work on the pheasant skin flies today wish me luck
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 3 года назад
You got it Michael, and good luck! I just saw your question re streamer or dry. Definitely go with a streamer. There's not a lot of dry fly material you can get from a pheasant skin. Maybe some no-hackle, winged dries, but those would be challenging!

Nice fly and great information Matt. Funny, just today the feather bender poste the Partridge and Orange. Coincidence - or is 'ol Barry creepin' on your channel and copying off of you? Just kidding - his method is really slick for that fly and I'm going to try it with some silk thread.
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 3 года назад
I know, right?? Pure coincidence, I'm sure! And his video will have a thousand views in the first few hours and if I'm lucky I'll hit a couple hundred after a full day. :-) But yes, I liked his method too, maybe a little better than the Dave Hughes method I used in this one. Especially only using half the feather. That does make it a bit cleaner.

I look forward to each episode.. This pattern looks like it will work. I wonder what kind of tools they had 400 years ago? Thanks for sharing! KANSAS
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 3 года назад
Thanks Jack- and yeah, that's a good question! I imagine they didn't use vises or bobbin holders 500 years ago. I'm going to see if I can research when vises became commonly used and how they tied before then.

Sir Matt good morning, Simplicity is beautiful, this fly looks elegant. I have a question that I seen a couple of videos where people are tying orange and Partridge is it the same fly or a different fly. Would the difference be the thorax and the color. Once again thank you so much Sir Matt for taking the time to school this beginner.
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 3 года назад
Yep, pretty much exactly the same but orange instead of green. There's also a Partridge and Yellow. All of them can be tied with or without the small hare's mask thorax. Thanks for watching my friend! Have a great day! -Matt
