I’ve had a lot of success with the rainbow warrior . I have to step up my fly tying game to learn this cdc technique. Thanks for sharing great 👍 job

Great tutorial. Have the folks at FFF thought about doing a fly tutorial for Kokanee Salmon. Those would be a blast on the fly.

Rainbow warriors work year round. If you don't have large tinsel, just put a thin uv coating over the sulky/smaller tinsel. Works just fine...

Love rainbow warriors tied on a jig hook.

Yea I tie everything dry nymph or wet with CDC instead of hackles now, works way better easier to tie and cheaper.

Could you try a spinning insect? (Leech) This is a rising trend in our country. It looks like a fly insect but weighs 2-3g.

Hey Lance I was wondering why you chose a dubbing loop as opposed to wrapping the stem around the hook?

Mostly durability

Have you ever tired this fly in fl pink?

What’s the advantage of adding the CDC in a dubbing loop vs tying the hackle on directly (like a traditional dry fly hackle)? Is it less bulky, or more durable, buggier?

Couple answers, in my opinion. 1) stem is thicker than thread. Thread will lay flatter and will maintain the same thickness. The stem starts thin but gets thicker, can add bulk quickly. 2) it saves good feathers. You can usually get 2 flies out of a single feather if you're doing a CDC collar. You can also use lower quality feathers, saving good feathers for when the whole feather is necessary in other flies. And 3) collars are meant to be super sparse on these as they're meant to sink quickly. By using a whole feather, you're effectively doubling the amount of collar you have. That's my 2 cents anyway.

Out of curiosity (and especially since you're using UTC thread), why do you tend to do dubbing loops with 2 strands of thread, rather than the split thread technique?

Split thread would be fine, but my (Cheech) main beef with them is that you have to use everything in the loop. With a standard loop you just cut off excess loop that you don’t use. Also, a proper loop twister spins much faster than a bobbin.

I sometimes split the thread when I’m really concerned about thread bulk at the head of the fly. I find it’s faster and less cumbersome to use the tool.
