Flycutting a gear tooth

This is not a very good video. However, I was interested in showing the lathe milling attachment that I made and the other added tooling that allows me to make my own spur gears. I cast most of the parts and the gear blank out of aluminum. The parts were all machined on this lathe. The methods I used to prepare the blank followed what is in the Gingery book #6. The cutting tooling set-up is a copy of what I saw on another youtube video. It is whited out but an 11" diameter paper circle with a 64 lines radiating from the center is on the top. After each cut I rotate the post including the sprocket and top wheel to the next line. The fly cutter is a broken drill bit set into a 3/4" round bar and set screwed in place. I used a bench grinder to grind the end to match one of my factory gears. This lathe is an old Craftsman 109 lathe that I got at an auction a couple months ago where it was missing all of the change gears.

Nice video. I'm really pleased you did that, as it shows that you can cut gears on lathes much smaller than mine, and it's great to see someone else verify that the process does work very well. Great job with the homemade mill slide too. Cheers Rob.

Nice work, you need to do a follow up showing the finished gear. I am in the process of restoring a little 109 that my neighbor gave me 40-45 years ago when I cut his grass. I think that I will make a similar gear cutting setup like you have for it.

I did this too on my home made lathe, I made a bracket to use my compound slide as the milling slide

I suppose you are right. Similar to wearing a tie around machinery. My reason was that the constant turning of the knob to raise and lower the slide was rubbing the skin on my fingers not quite raw but heading that direction. However, I'll keep the safety aspect in mind. I may need to face the knob smooth. I left in in the as sand cast rough finish.

Interesting. I would be interested in seeing a video demonstration of your method if you would like to post one. I'm not quite sure how you would set it up. I was interested in making the milling attachment anyway and so adding the gear cutting to the vertical mill was natural. Especially since that was how xynudu did it.

it's pretty dangerous to be wearing gloves like that around machinery. Great video though!
