First flight of a Westland Lysander IIIa for the new owner, from Rockcliffe ON to Gatineau QC. Helmet-cam and voice-over commentary by Dave Hadfield. www.hadfield.ca
Requests for more detail led to my producing a more in-depth Lysander video in 2020 (see on my RU-vid Channel).

My Dad who is 89 flew with you every step of the way, hands going to all the controls and buttons all along with you.

Thankyou Dave and colleagues. Lovely old Lizzie and very clear appreciation of its flying qualities. Just imagine trying to land in a French meadow in the dark and then Taking off again. Another one of the brainchildren of the unappreciated designerTeddy Petter.

Thanks Dave, very much enjoyed the flight. I live close to Old Sarum, Salisbury UK the oldest operational airfield in UK. Interesting history and the Lysanders first flew from this airfield. Although the Lysanders moved away from Old Sarum I believe SOE missions were also flown into France from O.S. during WWII often on moohlit nights using Salisbury cathedral spire to navigate back to the airfield.

That was a really cool video Dave! While you were flying over the Ontario farmers fields, it made me think of the many SOE agents that parachuted or were dropped into France and Belgium from Lysanders during WWII. It makes for something truly poignant and and truly remarkable!

I spoke to a guy a while ago, his Father flew one of these during the war. The ones that were used for covert sorties, were painted all Black, they flew without Nav lights and they had a Ladder, fixed on the fuselage next to the Port rear cockpit. This gent told me that all his Dad was armed with, was a service Revolver, there was no room for anything else. Can you imagine, landing in a farmers field, in pitch black, on the ground for maybe a minuet then away again. Brave men indeed.

so sad that we at the Canadian Warplane Heritage lost our Lysander to engine failure after so many years of restoration on Aug 16 2018. She was beautiful to watch with her unique yellow and black paint job. The great good news: no injuries.

It's very difficult to find parts for the Bristol Mercury engine. Frankly, I hope I am advised-of, and allowed to bid-on, any that come up for sale. We're really trying to keep this last one, now owned by John Carswell, and flown by me, airborne. Not asking for any freebees -- just want a chance to buy what's left. On the good side, I flew this one to Oshkosh and back last year -- all good!

Nice aircraft. Thanks for the flight

I'm always amazed by how much quieter the Mercury is than American radials of less power. I'm sure it''s down to the British use of a collector ring exhaust system rather than straight pipes. I like the fact that you elected not to fly any higher, that would take away the enjoyment of cross country flying. Not surprised the cockpit is hot, the canopy is large enough to be a bit of a greenhouse.

Great video, Dave! I've sometimes wondered what it would be like to fly a Lysander. Thanks for showing us. Incidentally, I met you briefly at Oshkosh in 2018 when you flew the Spitfire there. So thanks also for the respect and care you give to these wonderful old airplanes.

Just so you people know this: it's the camera that makes the prop blades visible. You don't see them in real life.

Another great in-cockpit video Dave, great view you had there! Thanks for sharing. Do the slats/flaps ever deploy unevenly and cause a problem, eg. in turbulence or while manoeuvring?
@davehadfield5906
@davehadfield5906 4 года назад
The Inner Slats and Inner Flaps are cross-linked to avoid an assymetric deployment. The outer slats are totally free-floating. From the pilot's perspective, it's all seamless and trouble free -- a really clever design.
@leifvejby8023
@leifvejby8023 4 года назад
I've flown the Rallye which has automatic slats too, not interconnected, and you can experience them coming out on the inside wing in a turn, not on the outside, but you don't feel it. Like not at all!

What a cool, though somewhat quirky airplane! Another YT video claimed a top speed of 300 mph, which seems a bit generous, given the nature of the design.
@davehadfield5906
@davehadfield5906 3 года назад
If you firewalled the engine, and tipped the nose down a bit, you might get that fast -- if the canopy didn't rip off... and you could afford the engine overhaul.
@jjohnston94

Do you leave the prop control on "coarse" for takeoff?
@davehadfield5906
@davehadfield5906 3 года назад
No, Fine. This allows full governed RPM, 3000. If left in full coarse the RPM would only rise to about 1900, and as you added the MP there would be detonation. It's like trying to get your car moving in 5th gear, and with a supercharged engine.
@jjohnston94
@jjohnston94 3 года назад
@@davehadfield5906 Yes, I know all that; that's why I asked, because you never say out loud before takeoff, "propeller pitch to 'fine'". Thanks.
@davehadfield5906
@davehadfield5906 3 года назад
@@jjohnston94 Pitch to Fine is an item in the Pre-Take-Off checklist referenced in the video, and never touched during the taxi-out to the take-off point.

This was the worst airplane built in WW II...Everything, almost 95% is built utter garbage...it actually needs a sizable room for landing...nowhere a STOL! A loaded Noorduyn Norseman need less room to take for landing and take off! Hum...this Westland Lysander could carry two passengers(very tight) powered by a 890 hp (660 kW) Bristol Mercury XII radial piston engine But the Noorduyn Norseman, at the same time carried seven passengers(PLUS FREIGHT) with only 600 horsepower... The view of Army AOP pilots was that the Lysander was too fast for artillery spotting purposes, too slow and unmanoeuverable to avoid fighters, too big to conceal quickly on a landing field, too heavy to use on soft ground and had been developed by the RAF without ever asking the Army what was needed (90% of all Lysanders were shot down!) See the Norseman cabin(About the same number built...)AND IS STILL FLYING IN THE BUSH! The Lysanders were dumped out 70 years ago!(And the De Haviland Otter, same engine carry TEN people plus a lot of freight sand use a quarter less than that crappy Lysanded!)
