Part 1 of 4. Flight from Wick (EGPC) to Reykjavik (BIRK). 660 nautical miles crossing the North Atlantic Ocean in a Diamond DA42 VI. Route Departs Wick, passes West of the Orkney Islands, into the North Atlantic Airspace, passing to the West of the Faroe Islands and finally to Iceland. There was a low pressure system to the south causing some 60kt crosswind component in the cruise. A few small diversions around some cumulonimbus clouds which would have contained turbulence and icing conditions. Flight took 4 hours in total burning 46 gallons of Jet A1.
2020 DA42, Registration N42LR, equipped with the Garmin G1000 NXI avionics. Use of Flight Stream, Garmin Satellite Weather and GWX 68 weather radar. Aircraft equipped with Flight Into Known Icing protection.
Use of Foreflight to aid flight planning and for Jeppesen Charts.
Pilot Headset is a Clarity Aloft in-ear headset.

Hi Richard, brought back fond memories. I’ve flown for 40 years. 8 with the USAF, Mildenhall, Anchorage over the North Pole, Helicon Athens, Okinawa to Vietnam, Cambodia. Took the F4’s out of Vietnam after the war in KC-135 from Guam to Hickam AFB. 25 years with Delta Air Lines, 3 years with EOS Airlines JFK to Stansted EGSS B757 ER, and Copa Airlines Panama to Rio, Santiago, Bogata, Venezuela, Caribbean Central America on and on! It was a great career. When I listen to you you exhibit great professionalism. I do miss it!

Hey Richard, A ground pounder here, only been up in the air three time in my 55 years, two of them were to finish off my ground school, but then Life happened and Got in the way, and then the last flight was to be air lifted from YYC to YEG for a life saving organ transplant. I absolutely ADORE your aircraft. She is a Beautiful machine! and to be able to fly from your home country to an international one is something I have always wished I could do. This is the very first video I have seen of yours and have certainly subscribed. Love seeing the world from the air, and since my physical health has gotten in the way of any kind of travelling, I like to see where others go and see and live vicariously through them. Thank you very much for sharing your videos, and I'm now going to binge watch an many as I can so I am fully up on all of your flights! Cheers!

Hello Richard. I greatly appreciated your professionalism and airmanship displayed during this flight! I was a 19-year-old Airman in the USAF in 1980, stationed at Keflavik, assigned to the 57th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, working on F-4E's at the Alert Facility. During my stay I was able to take a space available flight from Keflavik to Prestwick, Scotland following a similar route. I was also able to go on a three-hour HH3 helicopter navigation flight around southern Iceland, Keflavik, and Reykyavik. Your flight brought back great memories! Thank you.

My dad flew a B-24 from almost this route in November 1944, east bound of course. Kansas to Maine to Goosebay, then BW1 in Greenland before landing Keflavik to Valley Wales. After VE Day, he was chosen to fly the southern route - from Italy to Dakar to Natale Brazil then back to Savannah GA. From my research, not many aircrews were able to do this. They usually flew one way and did a troop ship the other.

Natal, Brazil. That's where I was born and raise. The city itself has a big connection with USA culture since we had an air base installed here. American soldiers and officers circulate in the city had relations with local people, that's awesome. I've lived in US for almost 3 years and I absolutely love that country. I love de WWII theme and I got chills only to imagine how much effort and lives US put in to free us all. All the military personnel my deepest respect.

Nice the Icelandic weather was kind to you. It can get a bit bumpy, I remember thinking once that Icelandair pilots have to be pretty good and must know the conditions very well, so there was no need to worry.

10.4 GPH on two engines going 159 knots, and with the oxygen system to go high built in. Just incredible performance from the Diamond twins. Hope to at least own a 42 some day. Thanks for the great video! That's an awesome trip to make.
@sulutkin
@sulutkin 2 года назад
I don't know almost anything about flying but why on earth you would need extra oxygen in that low altitude. Isn't there any kind of air ventile system or air condiotioner or what is it on planes?
@vini.cabelo
@vini.cabelo 2 года назад
@@sulutkin 18k feet it not that low at all.
@jared123123
@jared123123 2 года назад
I mean air conditioning has absolutely nothing to do with it lol but I get your point. Anything above 10k in a non pressurized cockpit recommends supplemental oxygen
@TheFlyingZulu
@TheFlyingZulu Год назад
@@sulutkin The difference between larger airliner type aircraft and these light twins is the larger aircraft have what's call a "pressurized cabin". That means the jet engines pumps air in and makes the air inside the cabin have a higher "pressure" (more dense) so that feels like you're still low to the ground and thus you don't need to be on supplemental oxygen when the aircraft climbs up to 12,500 or higher. The opposite is true of lighter twins, like this one in the video. They have are what is called "unpressurized" cabins. The engines do not pump air into the cabin and whatever pressure altitude the aircraft is it, is what altitude the pilot and passengers are at as well. The air has less "pressure" (less dense) higher up and it makes it harder to breath. For example, in the USA, anytime you fly in an unpressurized cabin for more than 30 minutes above 12,500 feet, you need to use supplemental oxygen. The extra O2 stops you from passing out.

@@richardtyrer Happy holidays/merry Christmas sir. I may ask a dumb question, but do you have some form of pull out tray table mounted in the cockpit so you can eat a meal or something while the plane is set to autopilot? No transatlantic flight is complete without halfway decent airplane food. Lol... Now for a valid question, can the cabin be pressurized slightly? I see you are wearing an oxygen mask on your nose, so I am assuming the plane has no pressurization system. Finally, does the plane have interior electric heating, cos the interior of the DA42 seems cold, and there is frost on the windshield? I like technology/engineering, so aircraft videos are fascinating. Also, the seatbelt configuration seems different from those that passengers wear on say an A330, or B757. :)

Back in the mid 1990's, I went to the Faroe Islands, to participate at a conference. I went there by plane (Not a pilot, btw. But I've got my share of flight hours in several flightsims, though. ;) ). "Exciting" can hardly describe the sensation, when you sit in a Boeing 737, approaching runway 30 of Vagar (or EKVG, for those who prefer), the turbulence rocking and shaking the plane, and you look out the starboard window (and peek to the port side), and see the massive cliffs on both sides of the 737....... I admit : It was the first time ever I was nervous!! We landed safely, ofcourse, and I had a little chat with one of the pilots, who said "Naaah.... That was nothing!!! Just another nice and easy landing.". He laughed, and then he asked me "Oh.... Have you ever heard of "The land of Maybe"??". I hadn't, but then I got the short version of how british troops, during WW2, who were stationed on the Faroe Islands, named it "The land of Maybe", because the regularly changeable weather makes it nigh on impossible to plan anything. ;) Safe flying - and thanks for another great video. :)

All approaches into Vagar are heroic. Instrument approach from the East a VOR/DME step-down. From the West an ILS down a U shaped valley with a dogleg (the glideslope antennas are in the car park) both instrument approaches carry a 1,200 ft minimum Altitude. If weather precludes that then you're left with a visual approach over the waterfall, up a Loch then throw a hard left to land on a very jumped runway.

Great video, ive been to Iceland RKV and KEF but it's nice to see it on video instead of concentrating through weather 👍

Hey Richard, thanks for filming and bringing us along! Really enjoy watching your videos! Hopefully bump into you one day at an airfield somewhere in the Uk and will certainly say hello! Professional as ever! Nicely done! John.

Hi John! You're welcome and thanks! Hopefully there will be a few fly-ins next summer I will go to, so maybe see you around there!

Great video, and flight. In awe of the DA42 as a serious mile eater, 119IAS at 10.2GPH, my little 172 cant struggle to 18000, and only manages 105IAS at 10 GPH at 8000. A different ballgame!

It's great. The engines are turbocharged allowing better performance at altitude and being JetA1 fuelled you get great economy! 😁👍

It's amazing the skill needed to fly a plane over a spinning ball in space. How these pilots make it look like the earth doesn't spin is just incredible.

Modern technology certainly helps! I still wonder how the guys did it 50 years ago! 😁

0.03 - I’ve met Dru, the guy you see refuelling at the start. Fantastic Scot 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 who is also a great mechanic and hosted us nicely when we were at Wick. Awesome little airfield.
