I was into ultralights in the 1990s but never could afford them. Also the struggle of airports and trailers and hangars… but this PPG stuff is amazing. It’s cheaper, it’s lighter, and it all goes in the trunk of a car. I literally learned the details of it in october and i plan to be flying by may.

Amazing that so many south carolina airports are non towered and you can pretty much draw a straight line across the state and say “i’ll just do that”. I love the backpack on the front idea to carry all your stuff. The solid cloud layer bit was a little unnerving, glad you explained you could see straight down. I’ve done that with a drone, where I can see straight up from the ground and when you pop it up it’s a solid floor of clouds. must be way different seeing it from above.

Dear Mark, I have a question to you. I've been freeflying for 10 years, recently got into paramotoring. I am easily running 5 miles etc, so in good physical shape. However, every landing is making me nervous, as it is hard on impact for me (I'm at the lower half of my wing's weight range and I flare good). It is as if my legs fail me and I'm practically faceplanting most of the time. Do you get used to having 50 lbs on your back? Will I get used to it and everything's gonna be alright? Perhaps I need to learn some special technique or I'm there is something I don't know about flying paramotors? Thank you very much, you are my inspiration!
@Paraegg
@Paraegg Год назад
You gotta run it out on a paramotor. You can't tippy toe touch down like a paraglider, if that's the problem you're having. I had a skydiving background and did the tippy toe touchdowns. It doesn't work in paramotoring except in higher winds. Good luck I hope you get it down. There is always trike. That's what I fly as my knees, back and neck are bad. Lol
@stephenkeen6044
@stephenkeen6044 Год назад
Also, which motor do you have and how much do you weigh? If you can get away with only 16hp motor, may be worth investing in a light frame with Atom80 motor. Best thing to do, though is to visit an instructor and show them how you do it, I'm sure they will be able to advise you much better than random internet people 😁
@windsailsurf
@windsailsurf Год назад
@@Paraegg you can land a paramotor in no wind and do a one step landing. you have to come in hands up and skim the ground (ground effect) and the brake at end you ill lift a little and drop for a one step landing
@MrEmiosk
@MrEmiosk Год назад
To preface I have no flight experience, but I will say what other youtube instructors say on this subject. The flare is too much, too fast. You are most likely pulling the breaks too much before you hit the ground, you lose all speed and that extra bit of lift before you are properly on the ground so most of the weight is dumped on you, more than you are comfortable with at least. It could be that you are not pretensioning your core and leg muscles properly so when you do land your legs aren't ready to bear any weight, you lose that fraction of a second needed to bring the next leg forward in time. Any more advice I cannot give, I do not know how good you are at estimating yourself and while you describe yourself as doing good doesn't mean terribly much since you are doing something wrong (if the problem hasn't been fixed yet). Further advice would be to have someone record your approach and landings, if not set up a camera, then see if a third person perspective could give you a clue. Excessive bending of the knees could also be a root cause for your legs failing. Try doing lounges with a backpack with roughly 15-20 pounds in it and see if that works. As sad there could be many issues, from overestimating your speed (you simply do not have time to bring next foot forward), underestimating your speed (leading to loss of lift and the weight coming down on you faster than you are ready for. Flaring too soon too fast so that you have no more break to utilise and therefore lift once you touchdown. Too having not slowed down nearly enough so you touchdown and your feet are simply dragged away under you. Too it simply being a confidence issue, like not trusting the grip of your bicycle tyres meaning you do not lean in the curves enough and end up in the ditch instead cause didn't turn enough.

@MarkHuneycutt

Congratulations on another successful PPG journey! I live in the middle of SC and have spent untold hours searching google maps/earth for somewhere close to free fly. I always thought that the escarpment (dune wall) on the beach at the Bird Island Reserve looked doable in the right wind conditions. When you said you had flown there before did you try free-flying the dunes, or only PPG? I'm also wondering if you avoided Sunset beach and stayed over the Bird Island reserve? I have heard that a lot of beach towns have enacted ordinances to restrict flying from their beaches, especially in SC. (I think we can thank the Parasailing operators for that.)

The old folk sound like my own, not flying, but sailing and biking. It's always why do that? It's dangerous, too far, easier/faster driving! Do not do it! Sell that boat you do not need it, think about if something happens! Why bike when you got a car! Said to me constantly while I am trying to lose weight by using a bike on all trips that is not time sensitive. Eat more! They say after I have consumed near 1600 calories in one sitting, you must eat three whole meals! Or being confused when I say I have already eaten more than I should've. They worry mostly because they don't know any better, but they mean well, despite how repetitive and frustrating it is.
