Early aviation pioneers recognized the potential of water-based aircraft for extended travel distances and military applications, but the Glenn Curtiss and the Wright brothers were the main key figures in the development of seaplanes during World War I.
Flying boats played a significant role in the early airline industry, offering long-distance flight capabilities and accommodating large numbers of passengers.

I love the story of the Pan Am clipper which flew around the world at the beginning of WW2 . The Globe was no joke for that Pan Am Boeing 314.

Bravo for finding the footage of these wonderful planes. And praise for those who properly stored it for us to enjoy.

Commentry one of the best. Flying boats, seaplanes, ships who cares. When they hit water and not sink !. Thought I'd seen all of them. Piggy back plane was great. Wife said I'll go shopping at Walmart . Hub said I'll circle ok, then land back . I have RC Sunderland and Catalina small scale [ 11ft /8ft.] Thanks playmates. Dave

For short haul flights, modern seaplanes could at least offer the promise of vastly cheaper architecture. Rather than pouring vast concrete runways and tarmac, you build a perimeter levee and fill it 3 or 4 meters deep. Could double as flood control or a reservoir!

A plane on floats uses a lot more distance to take off than on wheels. Also cruise speed and distance aren’t as good as wheeled aircraft. A float plane requires a place where it can land into the wind because of the waves so any water body would need to be huge and round.

The story of a clipper that was caught behind Japanese lines after Pearl harbor is a great read.

Good wide-ranging documentary. Yes it is dated in presentation and flawed in many parts but I learned a few things and saw some unique old footage. One annoyance for me were the large number of errors regarding Dornier aircraft for some reason (maybe just because I know more about them?). For the record: 1) the Wal was not only built in Italy as stated but also in Spain, Japan, and eventually in Germany as well. 2) the Do22 floatplane was never used by Germany in WWII and only exported, serving Greece, Yugoslavia, and Finland. I think they meant Do24, but the Do18 and beautiful Do26 were also used. And finally 3) that is not a Do23 at the end (being a land-based prewar bomber!) but obviously the Do24ATT

It's annoying that even a documentary cannot tell the difference between a flying boat and a float plane!

If I was an eccentric billionnaire I'd buy a Shorts Sunderland and convert it into a flying houseboat and just spend the rest of my days flying all around the world in it!

The last one belongs to Kermit Weeks in the US .. At the end of WW2 the last Sunderland's were converted to Sandringham airliners.. and sold to the Australian Ansett airways . He's got a couple of films of the aircraft on his channels. The most elegant was the giant French Latecours.

Great doco. Just 1 point ; at 30.00 the plane pictured is the Consolidated Coronado, not Catalina as the narrative implies.

Would it be useful to know the components? If the needle could tell you that you’re 5NM west and 3NM south of your waypoint?

From apx. 38 min. to 39 min., the documentary is all about the PBY Catalina. Maybe you've done what I often do - fast forwarding, skipping boring parts. I would have liked more Catalina clips since it's one of my favourites.

I was really enjoying this documentary up until you got to the Consolidated Catalina. Now, I fully realize that this documentary is about seaplanes and not about US Navy seaplanes but jeeeeez, why do you talk about the Catalina and then show extensive footage of the Consolidated Coronado without mentioning it? Furthermore, the Martin Mariner first flew in 1941 was a MUCH more successful and capable seaplane than the Catalina. No mention at all of it... The Martin Mars may have been the largest of the US Navy seaplanes but so what? It was an abject failure but it was produced anyway...
