These blades don't do much for thrust we're gonna throw these away. These motors don't work for us we're gonna throw these away The grate is affecting our thrust we're gonna throw these away. You basically went to Walmart and bought 4 prop guards.

Is it really still a box fan drone if you remove the blades and motor? Edit: I'm not trying to suggest that what they did wasn't hecking awesome, and I'm sorry if that's the impression my comment gave off. This cool as heck and I love the aesthetic of the fan cages, I just wish that in the title they would specify that they don't actually use the fan part of the box fan bc you know some kid saw the title & thumbnail and was really disappointed that they didn't actually make the orignal fans fly. Or maybe say that they made it from fan *parts* or something

ha we def proved that you CAN NOT do it with the regular motors... not enough thrust unfortunately. We then upped our game to make it fly ;)

@@FliteTest Excuses, excuses. You should have used servos to turn the control knobs of each fan to dial up the thrust. Just use 400' extension cords (want to stay FAA legal) for power to each fan. I am sure that would work.

I say, "No." It is bad enough that it is necessary to replace the blades, but once you remove the motors, it is to me no different making a drone "look" like four box fans versus actually using box fan frames.

Tom Hannah Well, the motors wouldn't have gotten the job done. They were also AC. They should have tried to make the original fan blades work somehow, though, or at least make propeller blades that look like fan blades. It would have been a lot of work, though, making and balancing some custom props.

No wood. Could have just put them together and ran tension tape around the outside of them all. Probably stiff enough and way lighter.

Plastic may have been lighter but I agree,use rivets.closer together and strong.i use them and I do robotics.less weight.but consider this,trial and error usually lead to a different idea and better results.im building a robotic preying mantis and I've had some setbacks but I've finally gotten the design correct.you have to find the"sweetspot"of the mechanical design and go from there.from years of experience.

The wood made it unnecessary heavy without any added rigidity. The aluminium strips on the out side edges was a good idea though.

I think the outside support for rigidness when manually lifting corners was not warranted.The lift force is produced linear with the motor shaft,essentially making the motor shaft the 'corner" with little to zero stress on box frame corners. all the stress would be directed to inside attachment points of the boxes,which the wood was used to support, Am I wrong ?

I agree. They could have riveted together the frames, and then achieved the rigidity buy putting the grates on at least one side. That's the same way a roof gains rigidity on trusses- by skinning it with plywood.

take one box fan and put 2 counterrotating blades on it. and for an experiment use a 2 blade prop, a 3 blade, and a 4 blade to see if one out does the others. put louvers on the bottom, that can be directed (left, right, straight down, and closed) ((think GEV)) use different numbers of louvers, in different orientations. like in a box setup, or the left and right set are run for and aft, (for lift and drift correction) and the center section (broken up into two sets) run side to side, (the front half of the center section rotates 120 degrees and the back rotates 90 degrees) (( the front directs the airflow from almost straight front to almost straight back; the back directs airflow from straight down to straight back)) these are just a few ideas to see if it works

@highks I believe it IS possible to modify the original fans to fly... except the motors would require replacement. Part of the "fun" of modifying is to actually modify. Strengthen up and cut down original blades, cut holes in frame to reduce weight, etc... Seems they took the easiest road available, and avoided all potential problems. The problems are what creates the challenge, that is why so many comments are negative. I imagine Peter would at least give it a shot, not playing it always safe.

You could also try cutting every other bar out of the top grate for better intake and perhaps every 2, 3 or 4 for the bottom to help with the appearance and rigidity without compromising the thrust. We had to cut every other bar out of our bug zappers when we were in Ecuador because the bugs couldn't get in. This is what thought came to mind watching this video.

i'm guessing power to weight ratio on a 15 dollar box fan is not going to be good enough to produce lift. even if you can, you aren't making it up with the batteries you need to run it. I don't think they should have done this project at all.

Man that had the potential to be super cool. Why go through all the hassle to build it just to fly it for 20 seconds? Surely everyone knew it wouldn’t recover from a roll. There could have been a ton of weight shaved off that thing too, most of the frames could have been drilled out and covered with gray tape or something. It might have been enough to be able to keep the grates or most of the grates, maybe cut out every other piece.

Awesome idea ! You should consider adding a D or E size rocket motor to the rear of the DeLorean. Should be easy to wire the igniter but you’ll need stabilizing fins. Frank at Dynasoar Rocketry could advise on feasibility since he builds and sells RC rocket planes. How awesome to see a “sparky” rocket motor on the car !

Love this fan drone really pretty cool. You kept the concept of this being a boxed fan and yet making it a battery powered "with out the hassle of heavy extension cord added weight" flying cooling machine that doubles, as "if you make a stationary base" a cooling fan on hot days and incase of foul smells would blow out a stinky room. Hook up a power source to by pass battery and you can use this any where, plus get the fine House Keeping sticker and who knows, LOL. Great job and funny!!

I now just go back and re-watch the old stuff that had real content and purpose. I am not one to comment often and never have I made a negative comment on any RU-vid channel that I subscribe to, just because I don't like negative comments. But I can't take it anymore.

Fun hack. The roll probably was probably spoiled by the heavy boxes and wooden spars having so much inertia compared with what a controller expects of a normal quad. Perhaps a box fan manufacturer would sponsor the development of a fully aerobatic quad. In the short term maybe the wood spars could be about half the width they are which would shave many grams, and trimming at least some of the folded-over box edges or ducting the fans might improve airflow. On the other hand it's understandable if you don't want to devote that much effort until there's a box fan drone race category.

It's always fun to see how you could do it better. If the steel is able to be hardened, do a little research & see if it's better under water quench or oil, take it apart and see if you can temper the steal so it won't bend.

It's possible, but it has one major limitation. The way that the cowling around the fan increases lift, it causes drones to right themselves horizontally when they try to move. The Digg posting I clicked on to get here had the title "An Experiment: Can Four Box Fans Strapped Together Work As A Functional Drone? I knew intuitively without watching the video it wouldn't work. So then I skipped the building part and went to the end and saw that it did work to my great surprise. I was shocked. But then I went back to the building part of the video and saw that it was all a big con job. The only part of the original fans used was the aluminum exterior housing. That's it! The motor and the blades and all the electronics were replaced with different components. So the answer to the Digg posting is a big NO.

Next quad project? Well, you guys know how you did the A-10? Now, you need to make an attack helicopter... And have two FPV cameras, one for the gunner. Some of the parts should be interchangeable. You could even simulate a top rotor and just mount everything to a quadcopter frame.

I've done the Wiley E Coyote thing, on ice skates. Goes too fast for hockey skates, they eventually shake like a caster wheel when too fast. Figure skates should be better. Stihl br600

Here's a couple of suggestions: Reduce weight as much as possible, replace the wood with aluminum strip(s) if possible. Cut away most of the grating, both top and bottom, to increase airflow and still provide some crash protection and structural rigidity. You're losing a lot of air beyond the outer tips of the props. Is there a lightweight way to use a shroud to prevent most of the loss?

*Hey look at me, I'm gonna make a drone out of a microwave!* Just gonna have to replace the casing, since it doesn't really fit, but I'm gonna figure something out. Now the transformer is kind of heavy, so I need to take it out aswell. And the electronics aren't really made for drones, so gonna have to replace them, too. and the turntable motor isn't quite strong enough, so I will have to figure something out there. So basically I replaced everything, but it's totally still a microwave.

I thought the point was to make a box fan fly if possible, which it probably isn't so instead of doing that or at least trying that you ripped everything out of a box fan that makes it a box fan and added drone parts. Basically to drop in adds for the parts you were peddling in the video. This is stupid.

Now take four radiator fans from some automobile, and use carbon fiber/fiberglass and plastic speeclips to secure them together to conserve on weight......radiator fan motors are 12 volt so you shouldn't have to change the motors.....the blades are usually offset however, older Honda Accord have nice round sturdy blades however. Just a thought.

Awesome! I'd like to see a small, compact drone capable of recording high quality 4K video. It must be small enough to pass through small openings like 1' x 1', and be safe to fly around people. It shouldn't be a racer, but made specifically for great ultra smooth 4k video and safety with close proximity to objects, people and small gaps. Co0ol!

got a idea for a project: take about 4 drones who communicate with each other to amplify the signal for a long range flight with a rc plane. I mean that the 4 drones catch the signal of the plane and transmit it from drone to drone and atleast it get's to the remote controller of the plane and the opposite to get a signal to the plane. sorry for my english i'm actually german, but whatever that would be a awesome project but it's difficult.
