You asked for it and you got it! It’s been quite a while since we’ve done a classic FT overview on a model aircraft. That all changes with our overview of the Flex innovations 2.2 m twin otter. Flex innovation has been a long time, friend and collaborator with Flite Test. Designed by world champion pilot Quique Somenzini, the Flex Innovations Twin Otter is capable of incredibly slow speeds all the way up to mine bending 3-D aerobatics. Today we unboxed, build, and fly this amazing monster size twin motor powerhouse to get a first experience from Josh Bixler and then hand the controls over to his youngest son Mike for a from a 3-D aerobatic pilot. After that, the team hands the controls to Dave Jester to take up and fly during the solar eclipse.
This aircraft has been a source of inspiration for the entire FT team for quite some time. Dave Jester is currently designing a DIY foam version of the twin otter and our goal is to learn from this experience and adapt the our new foam board Twin Otter to be a steppingstone both in capabilities And characteristics to allow people to grow into this magnificent aircraft.

Funny. When I was into model airplanes in the late 90s, I build a Piper Cub with 250 cm wingspan (think that is round 98 inches ) and I used almost five months on that, now you guys build a plane that big in hours. That´s progress :)

I cant believe you where that close to the eclipse and did not go into totality .... I drove 450 miles one way to see it. It was my second one.... But you did have some nice shots of the shadow ,,

I love my Flex Innovations Twin Otter 80E. I have every Flex Innovations plane. Including the Flex Jet TV 90mm EDF which is sadly discontinued. It is my favorite EDF with incredible Thrust Vectoring but I don't fly it much anymore because it is discontinued and I'm afraid to crash it and not be able to get replacement parts for it which are running scarce. Such a shame. Best 3-axis Thrust Vectoring Jet ever made. Please bring it back, Quique Somenzini! 😥 Everyone should own at least one Flex Innovations plane. They make you look like a pro pilot. They fly like no other.

You guys are great and I learned how to scratch build and fly model aircraft years ago from all the tutorial videos and the crazy things you all tried out. Sadly, seems these days, you guys are mostly advertising products. Why did all the experimental fun things stop? I would love to see that all come back.

Excellent video and I agree with your description of how the Twin Otter flies. It is very much like the RV8-60E with the bonus of the differential thrust for 540 stall turns and insane flat spins with the slowest sink rate per revolution I've flown. Like you said Josh, hovering isn't something I'm good at, but the Twotter just wants too! My Twin Otter is the Day version, so I flew my Night RV8-60E through the Eclipse. Both great flying planes and I'm looking forward to seeing the FT version!

Loved the Twin Otter I flew in frequently in Nigeria, between Lagos, Warri and Port Harcourt. Many funny stories such as dropping pebbles into the tin roof of the "ATC" hut by the roadway airstrip in Warri to wake up the controller so he could close the gates across the road so we could land. not that the locals bothered, they just drove round the gates and back onto the road, forcing three aborted landings in one month. Happy days. 😉

Here's a curiosity question. I've been studying to get my Amateur Radio license, and the literature mentions using ham frequencies for FPV (I think). Do you fine folks use any of these, and how do they improve flying?

I'm not very versed in flying. Why would you down flap instead of down throttle? Is it more stable? Not on landing, but during flight.
@davidjester5085
@davidjester5085 Месяц назад
When using flaps it lowers the air speed wile still having the motors generating power so you have more control and air flowing over the control surfaces
@OregonMotorcycle
@OregonMotorcycle Месяц назад
Flaps create more lift on the wing, allowing the plane to fly slower.

This comment is for anyone afraid of a bigger plane: If you stood in a 40 mph winds, at 45 degree crosswind, a were offered target 50 feet away.. I hand you a ping pong ball, and a baseball... You get to choose which one you throw... Which are you more likely to hit the target with?
@Alex-yang-0203

Mind blown
@kevintaylor791
@kevintaylor791 Месяц назад
@@Alex-yang-0203 It's an over simplified example, using just a ping pong ball and a baseball... but if you offer the choice of ANY ball you can throw: ping pong, golf, bouncy, whiffle, baseball, softball, volley ball, beach ball, medicine ball and so on. Then it becomes a real lesson.

I'm kind of surprised that you can have an affiliation with FLEX Innovations and then make a DIY that competes with one of their models. Yeah, that model is much too expensive for me. The DIY should better fit my budget.
@FliteTest
@FliteTest Месяц назад
Our goal is not to compete at all, but to build a bridge to amazing products. The phone gives people an opportunity to push the limits without putting the Flex at risk. That way people can get the most enjoyment without the nerves.

You were in 99.7% coverage and you didn't travel the 10 minutes to get into totality? I'm so sorry guys. 99.7% basically like not seeing the eclipse. Yes, you get the weird lighting effects, but the main point of viewing it is to see the sun itself which you can ONLY do at 100%. I wish you guys would have travelled to see it and built a plane to fly over the clouds to make sure you had a good vantage point. Oh well.
@Unicyle
@Unicyle Месяц назад
I thought the same thing... We drove from Arizona to Texas to be near the centerline of totality, and the difference between 5 seconds before totality and when totality hit was dramatic. The 4 minutes 30 seconds of totality we got made the 16 hour drive each way totally worth it. Definitely sad they didn't drive an hour to be near centerline.
@slembcke
@slembcke Месяц назад
Yeah! I wish I had a chance to encourage you beforehand. We traveled a few hours to see totality and it really was quite neat! I actually looked away to sit down right before it happened, thought it did happen because it got so much darker in that time. Even as a quick glance when I looked up it was just as bad as seeing the sun through trees while driving. 15 seconds later when totality actually happened I was still trying to blink that away. -_-
@mrbyzantine0528
@mrbyzantine0528 Месяц назад
I heard that line '99/7% totality' then immediately said 'and you DIDN'T BOTHER DRIVING THE EXTRA TEN MINUTES TO TOTALITY?!!' It was heartbreaking seeing the end with the actual lunar shadow just a few miles away, knowing what they missed out on.
