Disposition: one rebuilt to a Thompson Class A1/1; one preserved; one boiler preserved; remainder scrapped
4472 Flying Scotsman is the only survivor of his class that is in preservation.
4470 Great Northern was eventually rebuilt to a Thompson Class A1/1 in 1945 by Edward Thompson who succeeded Gresley as secondary successor of the London and North Eastern Railway.
The boiler, cylinders, and chimney from 2506/60041 Salmon Trout are preserved as spares.
All of the Gresley A1s and A3s are named after famous racehorses with the exception of Great Northern, Sir Frederick Banbury, Flying Scotsman, Centenary, Dick Turpin and Prince of Wales which are non-racehorse names.
