Shame they gave it the wrong number and colour 😢🤷🏼‍♂️ it was most famous in APPLE GREEN! I sat on my dads shoulders and saw her go past Hatfield on her last day of service in the RIGHT MARKINGS and colour. Nice to see her back but PLEASE put her back to her proper colour and number. 1924 she was numbered 4472 LNER markings and APPLE green......and lose that awful whistle and smoke deflectors, it looks like some foreign thing 😡

I love that high whistle. It drives away the grey, injects some cheer, and makes one hopeful.

Flying Scotsman's 95! It's incredible that this dear old lady of an engine can take on the stiffest sustained gradients of any line in Britain, such as are found on the Settle and Carlisle railway - and all this with an 11 coach load and no backing locomotive for that part of the run! We're all proud of her - and of those who fought to keep the line open. Not forgetting the people who built this man-made wonder of Northern England, too...

Saw the Scotsman fail to stop on iced over rails at Durham station she shot clear of the platforms before stopping.

Excellent as ever David and Peter , the best coverage by far and I should have been at Risehill myself but daftly changed my mind ( not many trees left ).
@Linesider1
@Linesider1 7 лет назад
Thank you very much indeed Steve, very kind of you and much appreciated. Rise Hill was a last minute decision and with the traffic, I was rather short on time on getting out of the car. It was terribly windy too (hence the wide angle approach) but seemed to just about come off - and yes not many trees left now, rather barren but some good long views. I still think you made the right call with Eden Brows - unique footage of a real one-off! Many thanks, David.

Thanks for that David. It really was a great day; history in the making. I went up to Eden Brows on the Wednesday before. They were running driver famils. in 124's. Fantastic engineering but a shame "the bridge" was made from Chinese Steel! There is a GPS monitor there that apparently monitors movement of the line to 1,000th of an inch! On Friday we were at Dandry Mire on the Hawes Branch Line & on 122a Grisedale Bridge in the evening. Weather held off ok as well! Had been lashing down all week! BTW, I was having a cup of tea with the signalman at Garsdale on Sunday & he told me he is extended to 2021. Hope The Box lasts that long, it's looking a bit "poorly" these days! Anyway David, thanks again and all the best. Nick.
@Linesider1
@Linesider1 7 лет назад
Thank you very much Nick - that's really interesting. I'll have to take a closer look sometime. Hope you got some good views around Garsdale, and good news about the box's life being extended - it won't be the same when they close, and that particular box does need a lick of paint! Thanks again, David.

Excellent sequences and editing, David - really telling a story, which ticks all the boxes for me, thanks. Oh yes, and your characteristic local interest shots. The only slight disappointment was the presence of the diesel at the end but more than compensated by your capture of the superb smoke colouring of 90733. Best regards, Bob K

@Linesider1
@Linesider1 7 лет назад
Many thanks Tony - it was a long but enjoyable day. The crowds were ok at the locations we chose, having most of them to ourselves, or just a few discerning folk. The nightmare, however, was Bullgill, where a gaggle of loud locals made as much noise as they could, commenting all the way up the straight. Placing the mic as far away from them as possible saved the day!

And to think, only a dozen or so years ago there was talk of closing the line for good and a landslide like this would have been the ideal opportunity. Today it is pleasing to see how some stretches have been so thoughtfully rebuilt.

they must think its a race horse by putting blinkers on it spoiling its appearance and its got a terrible number to go with it. I thought it was supposed to be heritage. They have spoilt a lovely engine
@tulyar1043
@tulyar1043 6 лет назад
The smoke deflectors are there for safety reasons.To stop the train crew''s vision from being obstructed by steam and smoke. If the engine went by a stop signal because it wasn't seen because of drifting steam and smoke,there could be a serious incident or accident with potential for loss of life. If this were to happen,there is a possibility of ALL steam runs being stopped by NWR,perhaps permanently.
