Absolutely, Grimsey is just an amazing place I would recommend it to anyone. I love the twin otter. Though I thought we were going with Gateship (If you get the reference) 😉
@@georgemaury not particularly when I went but I have been on Twin otters several times, they are sturdy aircraft for their size but all depends on the weather on the day in all honesty.
I love puffins and have always wanted to see them up close. Your video made me feel like I was right there . We have some puffins in our eastern maritime provinces here in Canada. Maybe one day I'll get such a great opportunity. Thanks for the great video
Hi everyone. Thank you for the film Dom. I’m an aviation enthusiast and I’m seriously considering a visit up to Grimsey. I’m planning on a short 3-4 day trip and hire car from Reykjavik up to Akureyri to visit the aircraft museum. May do what you did and have flight out to Grimsey and back same day. Best wishes to all
I flew from Akureyri to Grimsey... 50 years ago. The company was called Nordurflug then, and the aircraft was an old Beechcraft (to Grimsey), a Piper Aztec back.
I've never seen you look so happy, Dom! There's nothing "grim" about Grimley, filled as it is with those wonderful puffins and the glory of nature. I was told you also get puffins in the Hebridean and Orkney islands around May/ Spring time. Great, enthusiastic presentation, and brimming with optimism! :D

Thank you for sharing, we are going in June next year and we didn’t have plan to go to Grimsey and to think we are going there to photograph Puffins and more. Now we have to squeeze a day for Grimsey. We are doing the ring road you think it is possible to leave our rental car where you departed to Grimsey and come back in the evening to pick our rental car and continue to do the ring road? And by the way our 4 night we are staying in Akureyri. This could work.
Absolutely you would have time, at the time of doing this video the airport parking was plentiful and a lot of it was free. I would check the flight times with nordlandair, but when I did this it was an early morning flight up to Grìsmey that left me 2 hours 30 mins (official Schedules) to look around the island. To add extra context though, when I arrived the lady that very kindly greeted me did advise that it took around 1 hour to walk from the terminal to the top of the island and back. When I asked the pilots and ground crew of departure time they did say to try to keep to the time table but they are flexible with times if they know your going back the same day. If you want context on the footage I got for this video, simply look at my phone at 16:33 of the video Timecode. The time clearly shows 10:25 in the morning and by then I had got all the main footage that I used to create this video, so not joking here, you'd have plenty of time to take some photographic shots, you could go early morning (if able) and come back for lunch, which is basically what I did as I left my disabled mother to have a lie in & got back in time to take her out for lunch at 1 o'clock so leaving a rental car for half a day would be fine. For photography I would recommend a 70-200 lens with OIS if possible, but honestly the place is so abundant in wildlife you honestly have no problem getting high quality shots with a smartphone. Honestly i hope you find the time to make your way up to this magical island, Grìsmey holds a special place in my heart now & would recommend it to anyone. Did you get to go to "Downtown Grímsey?" There you will find Anna Maria, the "Mayor" at the main government office on the island, including the post office. Anna Maria will instantly make you feel at home, and she speaks perfect English having gone to school in West Virginia, USA. There she can give you your "I crossed the Arctic Circle" diploma, buy lovely lopapeysa (traditional Icelandic sweaters), and other wonderful souvenirs. Across the way there is a restaurant serving delicious puffin. I should also note that Grímsey church burned down a couple of years ago, but was rebuilt and open for services on Christmas 2022. Also, you can get to Grímsey on the ferry that leaves from Vík, very close to Akureyri, and take your car as well.
Why this romantic takeoff though? ;) That's the first time I saw captain and FO holding hands during takeoff! Is this some kind of a Twin Otter specific procedure?
I think they do that so the pilot that fly the plane have initial control of the throttles and then the co-pilot fine tunes the two throttles so the pilot can focus on flying the plane. Its not a Tein Otter specific thing i have seen in other planes to. But it looks romantic 🙂
