I had a partner years ago, I loved reading her books on permaculture, she and her family laughed because I always poured over the mediterranean climate sections, they didnt see me ever living somewhere like that, I guess not everyone believes in the power of dreaming. She came and went and I went and came to Portugal in my truck 25 years back, turned up with 45 quid but I had brought my home with me, I had a portable trade and was willing to work hard, found sympathetic folk who let me occupy their land in exchange for labour, I gradually learned the language and the way of life, with a little help and a few years of juggling my life about I managed to secure some land with an old ruin on it, been living here full time since 2018 and even imported my 84 year old mum after building her a home, seemed like a much better place to be than England. Live your dream Lucy, its real, youre on a good path.
You seem such a lovely and peaceful soul. I am so impressed by what you’ve told us of your life. You prove that when you trust the universe to provide for your needs while you follow your heart’s path, all will be well. I am sending so much love and sincere good wishes to you, dear human, and to your mum. You deserve the best that life has to offer. Thank you so much for sharing a message that hit my heart even more than it hit my eyes/brain. May all good things come your way, unceasingly. ❤️
@@whooshr5588 you know, even though I failed to give a decent account of myself for so much of my life eventually this mysterious world began to reveal itself in small incriments but enough to get my attention, come what may, your reply is one of the good things that come my way.... as is this video, I am very grateful to be here, bless your soul.
I also admire people who live off the land, but I can't help wonder what happens when they get older. There comes a time when you're not able to do that anymore or maybe even just don't want to do that anymore. What provisions do they make for a pension, medical expenses or care one day? In the past it didn't matter because a whole family lived off the land, so the children and grandchildren would look after the parents and grandparents, these days that's not the case anymore. From my experience, which I agree is limited, it falls on someone else to support them.
As a portuguese I want to welcome you in our country. I think that you have the right mindset to tackle this enormous task. Let's take this journey all together. Hope everything works ok for you. P.S. - We drive on the correct side of the road!!! 😀
Hi, Loosely Wild. Nice plot of land. I hope it all goes well for you. The large white grub is a beetle larva, if I'm not mistaken. I've forgotten what type of beetle it is but they're harmless, not horrible. Interestingly, we have them here in parts of Australia as well.
@@almamater7860 You are obviously as thick as 2 short planks. Any country that drives on the left has the lowest number of accidents per capita, simply because 75% of people on this planet are right handed and so stronger on the right side of the bod and the right eye slightly stronger than the left. Hence is easier to cross traffic to turn right than it is to cross traffic to turn left, hence more accidents in countries that drive on the right. Shows you never went to school.
Takes a lot of guts to take a leap of faith and cross the continent into the wilds of the Portuguese countryside alone. Big well done and I hope the caravan, self sufficient life works out for you .I will be watching with anticipation.
Don't ever change girl - you're like a breath of fresh air. Thank you for rekindling my hopes and dreams (it's been a very tough year). Your video warmed my heart and put a smile on my face. Good on you. Here is wishing you more happiness than you can handle. Subscribed and liked.
@@TheGoodlifeoffgrid It really depends. Some years are really rainy others, like two years ago, can be terribly dry. Personally I love rain, but what bothers me is that we don´t seem to have spring time anymore, we go from cold and rainy days to temperatures of almost 30.ºC.
I lived in Cascais, Portugal for a year. Dreary winter with lots of rain and grey skies. Perhaps the other seasons are considerably warmer. Portugal is a gorgeous place to live though. I loved it.
Daft trick to buy land without seeing it first. It is an oak, a Holy oak or evergreen. Water, most important thing you need on land in Portugal. Fundoa is a decent spot to be. I am in Fornos just about an hour north of you. I take there is just you and the dog, so Welcome to Portugal. I take you intend to live as frugal as possible on your plot. I am a market gardener and grow all I can, also do all my own work on the house. If you ever need advise or help, then give me a shout and if you wish to view my 4.5 acres I would be happy to show you around. Barney is more than welcome to come with you.
@@looselywild2679 Hello again, Don't know if this is100% or not, but I picked it up from another and the rule is you can live on the land in a mobile, but must vacate for 1 week each year. For permanent residents you must have live stock like goats that need attention daily. The other thing, If you buy a bigger piece of land and it has no house, then you need 3.5 hct or you won't get planning. O and you can't build in forested areas. Make sure your new land when you decide to up grade has plenty water as irrigation here is a must. When you et moved in let me know then I'll invite you here to see my place where you will pick up a lot of tips. You'll need to fence your paddock to keep the wild boar out or they will eat all your veg.
Lucy, you are as mad as a box of frogs! Mad in a lovely way - enthusiasm, innocence, youthful energy all wrapped up in a lovely young lady! Wish you well girl! BTW, Barney will be in 7th Heaven - and he may enjoy a fur-companion?
@@looselywild2679 Hi girl! Great choice, had one myself - caution though, they are a 'one person dog' and prefer strong leadership - you certainly have that! Luck.
You go girl! Exciting ... not knowing if you would like the property or not, but the sunshine does help. Happy for you. It's not easy, especially if you don't speak the language, but a lot of people do speak English in the Castelo Branco area. It takes time to overcome the new challenges that comes with the new environment, but well worth it. It gets easier once you have shelter, water and electric at Lucyland ... and of course local friends that are living the same lifestyle. I'm sure barney will most definitely like the sunshine and green pastures. All the best!
Welcome to your new country and land. I'm amazed at the great prices for such a nice pretty big plot. It's gonna feel good driving up to your land and camping out there. A bit of heaven on earth. Bravo!!! So happy for you.
You make me so happy but in a sad sort of way, you are living a lot of people's dreams...looking forward to seeing how you progress Lucy Land with Barney. I hope you find ultimate happiness ❤
I am Portuguese and I lived in Germany for some time and the coffee "problem" is real ahah. For American coffee ask for an "ABATANADO", happy to see you enjoy a piece of this sunny Land.
Olá Lucy! Welcome or, as we say in portuguese, Bem vinda. Espero que o seu projeto corra bem e que se sinta tão bem na sua nova quinta em Penamacor como na sua casa em Dorset. 🤙🏼🌻☀️🇬🇧🇵🇹
Your road into your land will be hell when it rains. Throw some rocks or stones so your lil car doesn’t have issues or damage the road more. Looking forward to being on this journey with you!!! All the best!!
Really enjoyed this and I love your dog Lucy. How cute that he holds your hand whilst driving and has a cuddle when you reverse lol. Good luck with the land x
Wow you are so fortunate to have bought some land with so much potential. What a wonderful location, I am so envious. The olive trees will provide an income for sure. The flat land area is ideal for building a property, plus the addition of fresh running water. With so much sunshine I would be using it for power from solar for all my electricity. Growing my own veg and fruit and become self sufficient. Maybe you have other ideas. Good luck Lucy with all you do.
I’m 65 and have a small school bus I converted and stubbled onto your video It’s so cool seeing your property and your excitement and I hope it works out for you as it looks like a really nice area
Lovely land Lucy, well done you, it’s very exciting, on fires I understand you have to go on an local Portuguese council internet site, to let them know your having a fire, just in case it gets out of hand, so fire brigade know where to come, but no fires or power tools use in summer because of fires, yes you can build a tool building, not a bad size either about 12 x 10 feet, I think roughly, quite big I think, you could easy fit a sofa bed living area and kitchen in, your not allowed to put bathrooms in them tho, as then it’s seen as a home not a tool building, so plant some fruit and citrus trees they will appreciate everything from your compost toilet, wood pallet built solar shower with shower curtain, or mini bathroom in your caravan. This is your new beginning of a wonderful adventure, all the best of luck to you, you deserve it, best wishes Allison, Karl & scamp 🐕, from southeast uk 😊❤
She could build a tiny house that size n have a loft. I'd use it as a tool plant shed n stay in both the van n it. I love it. How much is that in Canadian dollars I forget. I dated a Portuguese. I love cooking the food. I can cook like the islands. I coukd so survive there. Olive oil for life cod baby birds forget what their called lamb n goat. Heck ya fresh gardens yesss❤
Who cares what the rules say, do exactly what you want to do and enjoy that magificent piece of land you just bought. Those olive trees are at least 100 years old, quite possibly 150 years old. When you pick the olives you can make your own olive oil, how cool is that? Looks like the birds just ate your seeds, no problem, you just added to the rich tapestry of life. Their chicks will have a good meal today, Hey, you can always buy more seeds..
So, I'm a first time watcher and I just love the relationship between you and Barney, I'm looking forward to watching your progress on Lucyland and your dreams come to fruition. Best wishes to you both.
Hello gipsy sister😂❤. I just got my unfinished cabin put on my land in eastern Oklahoma (USA) last month. Big move with 3 large dogs from SW Pennsylvania to eastern Oklahoma. Totally restart for life. I left Pennsylvania because of the freezing cold wet icy winters. I have to giggle watching you. I hope you enjoy your new home and new life.🎉❤

Congratulations Lucy! Girl after my own heart, for wanting to buy some land, would love to do the same one day. And your enthusiasm and energy is very inspiring. X
In an identical situation, my priority was to use a large tarp to cover the Van and create a side area for shade and protection from the rain. Welcome and best of luck.
