The new Garmin GI 275 Multi Function Instrument is pretty amazing, but it is difficult to decipher it capabilities from the Garmin website. Here is it being used as a Multi Function Device paired to a GTN 650 navigator.
I forgot to mention one of the cool features which is an internal VFR GPS receiver. If the primary navigator fails you still have navigation capabilities to get you home.
If you have any questions leave them in the comments section and I'll do my best to answer.

I really appreciate this video. For those of us who learned how to fly instrument with a CDI and not an HSI, I think this instrument is very interesting.

Thank you so much for your explanation of the 275. I have installed dual G5's and a 750xi in my Twin Comanche and recently learned that the Garmin 500 Auto Pilot is now in process of approval for the PA30 BUT it will require a 275 be installed with it. After watching your video here, I am kind of excited about adding the 275! Looks like would be a very welcome addition along side the G5's :-)

Thanks for the video. Funny thing in various videos no one addresses the cost like this even the cost of the item less installation!
@dcheever777
@dcheever777 2 года назад
The problem with including the cost is it may (will) change. The best source of the instrument cost would be Garmin's website, I'll include a link and hope it works. Regarding installation, there are so many variables only dealer could give you a true estimate after looking at your plane. In my case the 275 was part of a bigger install job and certainly cost less than had it been a standalone installation. The price has gone up since I installed mine. I hope this will help: www.garmin.com/en-US/p/719027/pn/010-GI275-06

Thanks, Dennis! Sweet set-up. We're shopping G5 vs GI-275 vs uAvionics AV-30, so this is helpful. I assume if we buy the GI-275 for AI or DG they are locked-down so you can't access all those screens?
@dcheever777
@dcheever777 3 года назад
That’s a good question, I’m not sure which screens are accessible in that configuration. My guess is that they are limited, but a call to Garmin will tell you. I haven’t flown the AV-30, but don’t like the fact it has no magnetometer. In my opinion it’s a VFR instrument, the Garmin’s are both very capable IFR tools. Best of luck and happy new year.

Hi Dennis, great video! I have a single nav with a dedicated CDI, but want to add a Garmin GPS which I’m told can’t share the CDI with the nav. So I’m considering replacing my directional gyro with the GI 275 for GPS approach guidance and DG in one unit.. I’m confused, it seems one configuration is the MFD with an HSI page? But Garmin also sells the unit in an HSI only configuration.. not sure which is the right unit for this scenario. I hope this is clear, your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
@dcheever777
@dcheever777 3 года назад
Hey Paul. You should definitely talk with a Garmin dealer and get the correct configuration for your needs. Although the MFD does have an HSI display I don’t think it’s certified as a primary instrument. A dealer will steer you to the proper model.

Hey Dennis, we are trying to decide if we should go with dual G5 or GI275 units. Any opinion now that you have both?
@dcheever777
@dcheever777 3 года назад
That's a good question, I don't think there is a simple answer for everyone. I like the slightly larger screen size of the G5's and would not trade them for GI 275's, however I can also envision many installations where the 275 would be preferable. Instances of that might be not wanting to change the appearance of a vintage panel or not wanting to install analog gauges on a small panel. With the G5's airspeed and altitude are not primary, with the 275 they are. Another case would be integration with a third party autopilot that won't work with the G5. I'm sure you can find RU-vid videos of them installed as ADI and HSI that may help your decision. It won't be an easy one to make.

Hi there, Dennis! I'm struggling to have my Terrain Database updated on my GI 275, which is paired to a GTN 750. How did you managed to do so?
@dcheever777
@dcheever777 Год назад
Hello Hiago. I fought with this issue for months after installation of the GI275s. Finally I had the latest firmware update put in ( which is probably not your problem if they are new, but check anyway) and tried a direct connection via the USB dongle. That finally worked. It seems like neither the Wi-Fi connection or pushing from the GTN works for the Terrain Database. Garmin tech support is nice, but they had no idea how to solve it. This was quite sometime ago, perhaps they know more now. Please let me know how you resolve it, I would be very interested to know.
@hiagotb
@hiagotb Год назад
@@dcheever777 thanks for your answer! So, I guess that Garmin still didn't figure how to solve this nowadays... Because just like you, I tried to push the Terrain Data from my GTN and also with the Wi-Fi connection. No success. The main reason must be the size, Terrain Database is too large compared to others. So it demands to upload and update via USB only. I will try to do that later on. I'll let you know if I succeeded or not, thanks again for the help!

You should talk with the nearest Garmin dealer and get an estimate. There are so many variables that any guess would most likely be way off.

@@dcheever777 thank you. As to the “why the HSI” I can see people utilizing it if it’s their only GI275 and having to fly an approach. Had the dual EIS finally installed….love it (have uploaded a video)

I need to make a decision by Monday. I have a basic set up on my 1975 172M. I want to make it IFR rated so I can do all my instrument training in it. I am going to add the GNC 355 and was wondering if could just add this one instrument the GI275 and it would allow me to do VOR/ILS approach’s with the GNC 355? I am a new plane owner and a current PPL studentb
@dcheever777
@dcheever777 3 года назад
Hi David. If you want to do VOR/ILS approaches you need a GTN650XI instead of the GNC 355 unless you also have another NAV/COM. I highly recommend you set down with a CFII and your Garmin dealer to discuss your needs and options before making any decisions.

Hi Cap. Yes, the GTN does reflect whatever fuel status is showing on the EDM 830. I haven’t flown much lately, seems like there’s no place we want to go right now. Looking forward to getting back in the air soon.

OK, so I need my lasses to use..... 🤪 look if the display was twice the size, good. How much does this thing cost installed?
@dcheever777
@dcheever777 3 года назад
It’s actually easier to see than I had imagined. You can check prices at any online supplier. This is an item Garmin doesn’t require a dealer install, an A&P can do it. One caveat though, be sure they are well versed in electronic installation, the CAN bus must absolutely be wired correctly. I’ve heard of intermittent problems when it isn’t.

100th thumbs up :) I wonder if this is any good if you have the GI275 PFD as backup for the G500txi and a GTN650 as a backup for the GTN750. I feel like that would be sufficient for an RNP approach. ILS? Hmm...

What is the GSL to the right display of the MSA?
@dcheever777
@dcheever777 2 года назад
It’s height above sea level as determined by the GPS, not barometric. The acronym is for Geometric/Geodetic Sea Level. I put it next to MSA for a quick reference, but didn’t find it useful and have since changed it.

You are correct Dan. It’s still a good question though. If there’s a second NAV I expect having the MFD set up to display it would be great. Honestly until after it was installed I had no idea that I would be able to use VOR on the 275 simultaneously with GPS on the G5 both from the GTN. Whew, that’s too many abbreviations in one sentence!
