Hi Peter. It's been almost 30 years ago, but I did a lot of work on ducted fans. In those days I didn't have electrics so I was using weedeater motors. 6 of them. Talk about loud. I removed the governors and was able to spin them to 10 grand. Between the noise and flying debris the neighbors forced me to stop and my test rig was just too big and complex to move around easily. I actually set it up in three different places but complaints killed the project. At any rate, my experience determined that a 5 bladed fan with straight paddle blades set up so that the fans were about 1/8 inch apart ( fans to middle engines front and rear ) produced the highest thrust. I was able to get almost 150 lbs with a 24 inch diameter fan. Yes, tip clearance was critical. I wound up using a three axis mount ( like a y ) as torsional flex in the mount would allow the blades to impact each other. The legs were airfoil shaped and pitched to shape the airflow in and out to minimize spiraling flow and torque effect. The intersection of the legs wiht the duct were about 4:1 width to the inner points at the nacelles. These intersections were CRITICAL. Any disruption of flow was seriously magnified downstream. They had to meet at a near perfect 90 degrees and radii at the intersections worked best around 3/32 in. I was experimenting with variable pitch blades to reduce spooling times when I quit doing research due to neighbors. This is where I really had problems with blade contact leading to some rather spectacular explosions and disintegrations. I had lots of vhs video tape of these experiments but a house fire destroyed them. I've often wished I could start back and have specifically thought that modern high output electrics were the key. Unfortunately I am now retired and disabled so I haven't got the funds or the stamina to persue this research any more. If you would like to pick my brain and check into my work let me know. I'd get a big kick out of working with a bright young person such as you.

i believe the front motors by taking on the work of pre accelerating the air made em more efficient thus the 20% extra battery left in the rear which isn't bad for saftey margin as if the front motors cut out you still have half thrust to maintain half the airspeed you had maybe just enough to maneuver a landing but then you'd glide down anyway with the parasail just a bit faster the more weight you carry and smaller wings

Nice, this gave me some ideas: 1. To get a "large pizza" while still using small motors, perhaps you could run them in series instead of in parallel, so to speak. You could either have multiple motors turning a separate single propeller shaft via gears or belts, or you could have the motors share a single shaft connected to the propeller. 2. To eliminate the torque roll from a single large propeller disc perhaps without the inefficiencies of typical counter-rotating propellers, you could have the stator and rotor of a single motor each connected to a propeller, so that there would be no net torque roll. Just some ideas I had while watching your cool video, Peter!

It's actually better if the back propellers have 20% more battery than the front propellers, because it makes it more likely for you to safely land when the batteries of the front propellers are completely empty. You won't get much more flight time, but just enough for an emergency landing to hopefully not end bad.
@Siphonife
@Siphonife 2 года назад
cool thing about having a wing is you don't need any thrust for it to work. As long as your above suitable ground for landing you don't need any thrust.
@SapioiT
@SapioiT 2 года назад
@@Siphonife So you mean the paramotor should have wings on the side of the propeller/propellers, or above and/or below the propellers? I could see a cross-shaped or T-shaped wing being added to the top and back of the current contraption, to be able to steer and glide. For only gliding, a wider (front-to-back) wing but not so long (left-to-right) wing would be useful, with steering in the back of the wing for pitch and roll, and rotating half the width (not thickness) of the wing left-right for the yaw. All of this would add more weight and complexity, but he made a plane, so he could probably turn a paramotor into something resembling a short/tiny plane.

Vertical arrangements would require air to flow around the pilot with sharp changes in airflow directions reducing thrust. Ducts are very sensitive to inflow turbulence that mesh guards in front of the ducts would induce
@WetDoggo
@WetDoggo 2 года назад
@@michaelmagill189 yes that's true and it's a problem to solve or workaround. Propellers and ducts can develop quite a lot of thrust like this though. Flow combiners could be used behind the pilot, to fill the low pressure area and guide the air smoother towards the duct. With flow combiner I just mean a Chunk of reinforced foam that tapers from the pilot's rough surface area towards the space in between ducts and a bit of funneling structure towards the ducts. It's too difficult for me to describe it with words and adding to that i'm German
@michaelmagill189
@michaelmagill189 2 года назад
@@WetDoggo low speed ducts want to be as short as possible. A longer duct pushes the operation toward higher speeds. Fine for airplanes but not parasails. These things want massive volumetric flow at relatively low velocity. The big advantage of coaxial fans are higher thrust from a smaller unit and elimination of torque. They suck up a lot of power for what they produce and to get any real efficiency the fans need to turn at very high speeds which creates spooling lag and slow throttle response. Just like the early jet engines just with no hot section to blow out. See my direct post on this vlog for more details on my experiments. Always fascinated by this subject.

You make some of the coolest things fly in non conventional ways. It blows my mind though how you mickey mouse some things together. Lol. "I got duct tape where's the trash bin?" It works though. Patiently waiting for more. Good luck!

Now you're getting close to my favorite hobby, Hovercrafts. If you're looking for a project idea, electric Hovercrafts are in super infancy and it would be awesome to see your take on it.
