My Step father is a cooperate pilot and has used iPad Mini's for years, it is the perfect device for pilots, gets rid of all the paper charts.

I’ve been flying with iPads literally since I got my hands on the first iPad back in 2011. I’ve used ForeFlight with a Dual external GPS (then) and a stratux ADSB/AHRS/GPS (now). Over time I’ve flown with the iPad (original), iPad Pro 9.7”, iPad Pro 3rd gen 12.9” and I’ve just ordered an iPad mini 6. As a pilot jumping from plane to plane, I find the mini the best combination of size and functionality. It’s guaranteed to fit in any cockpit. The big iPad Pro was just too big. On my first long flight with it in a Piper Cherokee I ended up bending it trying to get it out of the way of of the control column. The iPad Pro 9.7 was nice, but again… just slightly too big. I’m really looking forward to going back to the mini. Can’t wait ti get flying with it again!

Which one size ipad would be the best for a Cessna 172 and an Airbus A320. Would you get an Ipad pro 10 inch or an Ipad mini 6?
@coolcanook
@coolcanook 2 года назад
@@leoarjuncrasto I just received my mini 6 yesterday, and I have to say, I think it’s fantastic. I think for any situation where I was going back and forth between different aircraft, I’d go with the mini. Even if you don’t have a mount in the aircraft you’re hopping into, you can still use the mini, even one handed if necessary. It’s been about twenty years since I’ve been in an A320 cockpit. If you’ve got a sweet mount and a spot in mind where to put it, maybe the bigger iPad might be better for you? Would be interested to know what you decide and how you like it.

Great interview. It's nice to hear from professionals and how technology helps them with their work. You should do more videos like this in the future.

When going across the country it was crazy! You had to buy all the VFR and IFR maps plus all the approach charts to any area that you may have been diverted to! And it was good for 56 days! Not all pilot shops had all charts so you tried to have all you needed before leaving. It was a real drag and expensive. Now with one iPad mini and regular iPad for back up you are good to go for the whole country.

I use the new IPad Pro 11” and have no problem with it in the C172’s and DA40’s. I just have it sitting freely on my lap and that works fine for me. It would be nice to have the iPad mini 6 on a window or yoke mount but my iPad does justice.

I have a Cessna 150 and currently use an old iPad mini. I'll trying to decide between the new iPad mini or a larger iPad. Has anyone made a similar switch and regretted it or are glad they made the switch? The large ones aren't THAT much larger, but space is space and I don't like to block the new of the instrument panel. I have mine mounted on a yoke.

Phenomenal video, and thank you to Scott for the shared experience. Question (from a fellow pilot): What is the iPad mini case or kneeboard that he has in the video or that he prefers to use in the cockpit?
@scottoglesby1760
@scottoglesby1760 2 года назад
Good morning, Drew. My case is a Solo brand case that I believe I purchased years ago at Staples or Office Depot. It has pockets that I use for my pilot certificates, medical, and passport. I've tried to find an equally suitable case with Daytimer type features (calendar, notepad, & pockets) inside and I haven't been successful. Yes, I know I could use the calendar scheduling feature on my iPad but some things I just like to jot down as I go. ;-)

Mini and the Air are useful for drone piloting also. Only problem is the screen is not bright enough. Using a sun shade helps.
@scottoglesby1760
@scottoglesby1760 2 года назад
Agreed. The screen can lose contrast in bright sunlight and does not work well with polarized sunglasses.
@aerozg
@aerozg Год назад
I also use it with my Mavic 3, always with a sunshade. The declared brightness is 500 NITS, which is standard for consumer devices. I wish it had at least 1000 NITS, or more. I have a Feelworld external video monitor with 2200 NITS screen and this is the brightness level that works great in direct sunlight.

Your iPhone is the backup for ForeFlight
@coolcanook
@coolcanook 2 года назад
Generally speaking, as the gentleman in the video mentions, the biggest risk is that the iPad shuts down in direct sunlight due to overheating. As @mattmakesvideos rightly mentions, the backup is your phone. I also generally bring an external battery just in case of an electrical failure.
@scottoglesby1760
@scottoglesby1760 2 года назад
I've only had two types of failures with my mini, and only one was an iPad Issue. Heat is the enemy of the iPad & iPhone. My phone is my reserve and I keep it shaded & charged as my backup. I've had to use it a time or two as I failed to keep my iPad cool & consider it my own fault as I know it is a definite weakness. The only other failure I've had was GPS signal blocking from our military (or maybe it was Cuba) while I was going across the Gulf of Mexico from Key West to Cozumel in a Pitts Special. THAT got a little interesting......

Would Cellular model be required for flying or Wi-Fi is enough?
@scottoglesby1760
@scottoglesby1760 2 года назад
The cellular model is preferred so that you don't need an external GPS source and so that you can always get Wx updates when within range of cellular signals.

So why not iPad Pro 11 or 13 but a smaller iPad Mini? Wouldn't at least 10" or above be more helpful in looking at the screen?
@BixbyConsequence
@BixbyConsequence 2 года назад
As he says, you have to balance that against the available space. The Mini's screen is quite generous compared to a lot of "glass cockpit" instrument screens.
