Matt and Leah give a late March tour of Matt's personal Venus flytrap and Sarracenia collection. The flytraps are just staring to put up their spring traps and a few flower stalks are emerging. Most of the Sarracenia have their first spring pitchers open and are coloring up nicely!

Great looking traps. I got 2 B52 plants about three years ago and now have almost too many to manage. They have multiplied exponentially and I probably have close to 100 b52 plants now of varying sizes. When repotting I would pull a cluster out that looks like one plant and it would split up into 5. I recently ordered a ton of dirt from y’all to take care of the space problem for now. They are doing very well in the mix y’all sell.

What are the large terracotta -looking plants made out of? I'd like to repot mine into deeper pots like that.

Do you breed Sarracenia? Would you ever make a video on what crosses you like to make and what you are shooting for?

Yes, I make Sarracenia crosses every year. Usually I just pick out plants that I already love and try to either amplify the traits or pass them onto another plant that I also love. So I pick two plants to cross that will either (hopefully) make a trait better or make a new plant with unique and beautiful traits.

Awesome collection. I have a S. Alata. The plant is actually finally pretty big, but all of the pitchers are growing floppy and to the sies. What could be causing my pitchers to not grow straight up? Would it be too late to cut old pitchers off? Bould it be the lack of sun light from so many pitchers clumped together. Should I repot it, or is it too late? Do you have a video on how to divide them?

S. alata pitcher tend to fall over quite easily. It's possible to use something to help hold them up, or you can just trim them off if they are too unsightly.

When you guys cross the plants what do you use to secure the flower from unwanted pollen or debris?

I keep the greenhouse closed pretty tight in the spring, and the Sarracenia usually flower before any pollinators are awake and moving in Missouri, so I don't really have to worry about unwanted pollination.

Do you guys fertilize or any supplemental feeding of VFTs

No. I never fertilize the flytraps. I do occasionally catch a bug and feed them but I do not have a regular feeding routine. However, they do grow faster if fed!

Is moss on the top very bad for them …I am wondering if it’s smothering my Sarracenia, I can’t find all these lovely varieties in U.K.

Sarracenia aren't bothered by carpet moss unless they're very small. They grow quickly and vigorously enough that they can push their way through most things, including the sides of pots!!
