I know this is an old post, but i just started watching these videos on Predator engines since my engine just failed in a leaf blower "GiantVac" where I took out an old 80's / early 90's style engine and stuck the Harbor fright $99 engine in, and has been working great for 8 years until now but ran into backfire issues, no start, even after putting new carb on it bought from Ebay.... thanks for explaining this stuff really well, will have to subscribe to this channel.

Great, I came to learn how an advanced timing key works, and learned absolutely nothing about how an advanced timing key works. Thanks for taking up my precious time!

Hi KW This is an installation video. I don’t have any videos on how a hammer works either, sorry The key moves the flywheel in relation to the coil to fire the coil earlier when the piston is coming up in the cylinder. This is important with higher octane fuel as it burns slower. Very important for “experts” that want to use race fuel in low compression engines in hopes that will magically make more power. These keys simply change the relationship between the flywheel/coil and when the plug fires If you have specific questions please let me know

If anyone is wondering YES this does make a difference, what do you think $100+ flywheels come with 8° built in for? Use this to support your stage 1 until your ready to install your billet rod, aluminum flywheel, cam and correct springs! You dig😉?

wait did he say the racer dudes dont use a timing key at ALL ??
@fatbuddycat
@fatbuddycat 2 года назад
@@AmericanCruiser some just set the timing and then use the torque and the Taper to hold it on. The Woodruff key doesn't keep that flywheel in place at full spin, it just gets it in the right place. The nut and Taper do all the work. This is why torque specs are so very important.

First and foremost thank you for all your content on here i appreciate all your wisdom being passed down, with that being said i have a predator 212 cc and the flywheel will not come off i dont want to damage it, is there any other way to take off the flywheel

They always try to make this look easier than it is to encourage you to buy. The flywheel does not come off this easy, he barely put any pressure on it at all.

Right ? And what exactly is the “front of engine” should be more specific. It would also be great to zoom in on parts being worked on and described. I mean that’s what I want to see

if you add the 8 degreee key, can you still run 87 octane fuel? or do you need to step it up? same question BUT with the addition of the thinner .10 head gasket? assumin you have the air filter, open header and the carb properly jetted for those, do you need to step the jet up again for head gasket and/or 8 degree key? thanks and love your vids, very straight forward and clear cut.
@TheGrayGoatGarage
@TheGrayGoatGarage 5 лет назад
Hi Bill, Yessir! You can run 87 octane with the 8 degree key as the compression ratio has not changed and that is not excessive advance for the engine. The compression gained for the thin head gasket won't have any effect either. Ya know! I see so many guys wanting the high octane fuel for mo' powa' ...but it is actually working against them in most cases. I run 87 in most of my engines. Of course, jetting is critical regardless of the octane you are using. With the thin head gasket you may be able to go one size bigger on the jet, but the average guy jets too rich anyways! We need to have heat in the head to make power. Advance the timing and put the .010" head gasket in and run it! You may find that you already have the perfect jetting! Please let me know if you have additional questions...and thanks for the kudos! Much appreciated

Rotate the flywheel forward until it contacts the key and then torque the flywheel down. Once you see the key this will make sense to you!

Nice! What does the 8 degree timing do for the engine? I know my ARC billet flywheel has the advanced timing built in. Will it make the engine overhead?
@TheGrayGoatGarage
@TheGrayGoatGarage 5 лет назад
Hello! I watch your videos and posts on OMB! Thanks! For these engines to slip through the EPA for importation, the engines are really choked down on the intake and exhaust. When you open them up with a header and intake, we can increase the timing to get more power. This typically has a bigger effect at higher rpm's, but we have noticed better performance even with the governed engines. The stock timing is at 24 degrees...which is a bit lazy! There are no overheating issues associated with that as the additional fuel helps keep things cool! These engines need some heat in the head to make power. That is why the jetting is critical! Please let me know if you have additional questions

Thanks! I am having fun playing in the Gray Goat Garage and hope to shed some light on different topics. Too much bad information out there! We are updating our new RU-vid channel as well! say tuned and watch us on Facebook live on Thursday evenings at 8PM Eastern time. I am starting my GX200 build this week. I will be boring the block to 2.815 and using a Predator crank for a little more stroke. Big valves, a lot of cam and 1.3 ratio rockers are in the works. I need to beat up some young kids with this one!

If only there was a shot of the other side with the crank spin stopper. Some smartass on a FB minibike page said yall dont share all secrets for free. That one has to “grease” their palms. I argued & got called names.

Use a bigger hammer! 🤓 It is all about shocking the parts and not how hard you hit it! Make sure to pull out with a big screwdriver to remove the endplay and then give it a decent shot with a heavy hammer Small hammers do not shock it enough! Good luck!

Hello, i purchased the stage 1 kit from omb, along with the pipe/air/jet it also came with 18lb springs and 8 degree key. Should i install these also?
@TheGrayGoatGarage
@TheGrayGoatGarage 5 лет назад
Hello, If you have the governor intact, you may not need the 18# springs. The stock springs are 10.8# and the valves may float at 5000 rpm's. However, the Chinese springs are inconsistent and you may get valve float earlier than that. The stock timing is very lazy at 28 degrees BTDC. The 8 degree key will get you to 32 degrees BTDC and will help that engine make more power. I always install the key! Please let me know if you have additional questions

@@TheGrayGoatGarage some guy told me not to install key until i get billet parts?
@TheGrayGoatGarage
@TheGrayGoatGarage 5 лет назад
LOL...with a billet flywheel, you can use the stock key as the flywheels come with 32 degrees of advance. If you are using the stock flywheel, it is not mandatory. but it will help. IOt all depends u.pon the intended use of the engine. Most people don't install the 8 degree key as they are intimidated with removing the flywheel. If you plan to use a billet flywheel in the future, don't worry about it right now
