In the initial setup I had the radio+line audio recorder zip tied directly to the top of the drone. This didn't work as it was picking up interference from the motors on the drone. This time I tried carrying the radio below the drone with better results and no drone interference. I had some trouble keeping the antenna oriented in the desired direction.
I had the radio parked on 101.1 FM, and was able to hear WFGE-FM which is about 90 miles to the west.
This is just a quick demonstration video, a more in-depth video will come soon!
I only brought the drone up to 1100' due to only having 50% battery at takeoff, but it can go up to 1600'.

Line on sight makes all the difference. I'm a private pilot and these days I took my radio in the airplane to test at high altitude. At 1500ft I was able to receive some stations from a city 100 km (60 miles) away, which I was unable at ground level even on a good open spot

For a few weeks WROZ (101.3) was off the air for a format change here in Lancaster PA. I was able to get WFGE on the ground pretty well on 101.1. As long as I was in a spot where WBEB didn't come in from Philly.

What drone do you have? Do you need to use a remote control or can you fly like you could Parrot AR Drone with only an android tablet? If this can carry a radio, then it can carry an Airspy no problem? I am thinking of buying an old AR Drone just for this, since it runs linux already so no need to strap extra computer + wifi to it but if you maybe know for some good AR Drone alternative that could carry some extra weight, I would love to know about it

Instead of having a separate recorder with an aux cable dangling why not get a radio that has a built-in recording function such as the Retekess V115, or Kaito KA29?

Not with any consumer drone, the tropo layer is about 8 miles up in the sky, I believe

Thats quite impressive! WFGE is only 8.5kW, and sits at about 2460ft, in very rugged terrain. The signal that serves the State College area is not good, mostly because of the geographical topography (mountainous). I see an average of 72-77 dBu for the area. I figure you are in or around Berwick, and surprisingly, WFGE has a few areas of 40-51dBu (on the higher peaks of 1100ft-1600ft) in that area, so it makes sense for you to get them. No, the signal will not get much better at 1600' unfortunately, and in fact you might start to pick up other, more powerful stations on 101.1 further out.
