Great interview and discussion so be sure to check it out. Also M'Lisa has some ham shack Winter Storm Damage photos on Show us your shack this month.

It was a thrill getting Southern Ontario, Michigan and Northern Ohio from Central KY with just 50 watts 2 meter SSB on a 3 element beam.

I have nothing but praise for someone that sets up an awesome FM mobile station like John's. The FM stations help immensely during the VHF contests and help promote this aspect of the hobby! That trail going up the Flag Pole Knob looks challenging even in nice weather. 73 DE WA5RR

FM is a lot of fun at times.......I try to be very capable on my station on both FM and SSB......though my passion is on the weak signal SSB/CW side.....

Hi Korey, John has done some great stuff. In January 2020 when I last roved thru Northern Virginia, I started in PA and there was snow/ice hitting. To the south in VA it was mostly rain though John couldn't get up to his preferred location then. When I got into northern VA 146.52 just came to life. It was really nice going thru there and I worked John from a bunch of grids.

The trail to Flag Pole Knob is quite easy as long as you steer around the bigger rocks. I have taken Porsche Cayenne's, 2wd astro vans up there and have seen Nissan Altima's and Ford 2wd Escapes at Flag Pole. Its a great place to work any radio from. HT's with whips can reach out 100 miles plus on 2m. With W4IY's big beam and 1KWon 6m we have done SSB to all 50 states and most of South America along with CW into Europe. What a great place.

That is a GREAT idea, we may do a short separate construction video of the project if he has the photos. I'll be contacting him here shortly to follow up on that.

You switched to stacked vertical beams 14:48 for the FM attempt (more gain) but did dale stay on the same horizontally polarized antenna he used during your ssb qso ? if so then you had about 20 db loss .

Steve good and fair question. We operated SSB on yagi antennas horizontal polarized, when we switched to FM, Dale switched to his vertical beam and I switched to my stacked. Please note I also run stacked beams on SSB. But in our test we both were operating Horizontal together and then Vertical together.

so as im watching this im wondering and this may be a stupid question LOL. Do all 2 meter radios allow SSB and FM? I guess ive never really checked my radios to see if i can change the mode on them.

2 meter FM radios can only do FM only. Multi-Mode 2 meter radios can do FM/SSB/CB and AM.

@@joeblow8593 As a less expensive option, a 2-meter transverter can be obtained and driven with a 10-meter rig. That's how I started out on 2m without a dedicated multi-band rig. I still use a transverter for 222-MHz and have a lot of fun.

You need an all mode VHF/UHF radio to do the other modes such as CW and SSB. Most 2 meter rig s are FM only. Look at the FTM991A, the IC 9700 is an amazing rig, and there are a host of used ones that are pretty affordable today.......
