Welcome to episode 1 of my FM24 Head Coach story. We return for our annual journeyman story, combined with a Director of Football challenge. We start unemployed with no reputation or coaching badges, working our way to the top of the game with no say in transfers, contracts or staffing. In episode 1, we search for our first job, hoping for an interview and job offer to start our career!

Hey Dan, really glad you're starting in a bit more exotic location this year. Let's make it an additional rule that prevents you from managing in British Isles. You can even make a backstory to it. "Daniel Coady embroiled in matchfixing Sunday league scandal. Banned for life from managerial roles". Haha :)

Haha I won't go that far as I still want to end up at the pinnacle of football. However, I want to take a slightly different type of journey and a couple of jobs across the world is only going to be good for that. I can't wait to get going! 👍

I don't think starting in a different country than England is unrealistic personally. Darlington may be bottom of the national league north but they still have a former player for a manager. I've always thought FM doesn't go low enough for a rise through the leagues save in England with no badges to start. The fans at Darlington would have heart attack if me, a support worker from Yorkshire, got the job with no past playing experience or any qualification to coach football at all. I reckon you'd have to go as low as tier 8/9 to be able to learn on the job. But anyway, good luck and most importantly, have fun. I'll be watching along religiously :)

I completely agree with you. Even then though, when approaching teams to be aligned for coaching badges, etc, it's still very much jobs for the boys at many clubs. I think going abroad is becoming a more common route now, so one I'm happy to reflect in The Head Coach. 👍

Just started watching the series as a break after completing my first season in 24. Familiarity & cohesion seems to have a good bit of importance. Hoping that you notice it in later eps. Changing mentality & roles/positions really whacks familiarity. My best fortune has been to stick to a couple formations max, each with its own mentality for situation, and training the players to fit the formation & roles as much as possible. One interesting test would be sticking to formations & mentality consistency but if changing roles being consistent on the role used for individual players.

Oh this is definitely the way. Managing dynamics and morale is the key to success and a couple of consistent, simple tactics helps this massively. Communication with players is massive too but isn't helped when your DoF is managing all transfer and contract discussions!😂

You could use the preset 4-2-3-1 Gegenpress. It has two defensive midfielders. Brilliant tactic, at least in any earlier FM version.

Whilst that's true, I don't think it'd be fair or realistic to play gegenpress with a midfield that are all 33+. 😂

I'm so excited to see you start a new journey, especially because you've chosen a league I've been loving more and more recently! On a side note, you might be happy to know that Gifu is the club where none other than Celtic star Kyogo Furuhashi started his professional career! It also looks like former Sligo Rovers player Ryan De Vries played for this club, but I don't know if you're familiar with him...

The Kyogo link didn't even occur to me, to be honest. I used to love watching the J League games here early in the morning, but they're on RU-vid rather than TV now. 👎

If the squad was more balanced, Gifu would be safe and you wouldn't be required. It really does come down to the DoF. Good luck!

I started my Journeyman save today, had a few interviews around Asia (& Wales), and the best offer was from, yes, FC Gifu!!! Luckily I came in with them 11th in the table, not bottom like your save, and I managed to negotiate my wages up to 1K/week.

Baffling stats for a RB. Nobody can convince me that kid isn't a striker. No wonder they're bottom if they think he's a defender!!!😂

This is the problem i had. No defenders and just weird positions. I joined just before their september window and spam trialled loads of frees reccomeded by DoF. FOund an awesome 15 year old LB who is a squad player right of the bat and a couple of veteran LBs...only one extra decent CB though. Also approaching end of season - everyone is so old and stats dropping off a cliff. Huge squad rebuild incoming

I'm really hoping we can get through this season, survive and then let the DoF rebuild. We're yet too see what he will deliver for us, but it can't be much worse than the defence we've got! 😂

This club discovered Kyogo Furuhashi who almost gave up becoming a professional footballer so I want you discover next Kyogo as a worker as a part time job in this stadium

It would be interesting if the game somewhat 'masked' the attributes of your own players when you first come into the club, so that you almost have to trust your assistant's (poor) evaluations until you as the manager have seen enough of them in training to form your own opinions of their ability/attributes. Maybe in the squad planner you could set your own star rating opinions although I feel like that feature would just be ignored by the most managers

I really like that as an idea and it would potentially be more realistic. I guess the argument in modern football though is that data analysts could give you every stat about each player when you arrive at a club nowadays, so gives you a strong knowledge of them immediately. 👍

Just wondering if someone in the comments can recommend what I need in a gaming pc to run fm quick and smoothly with alot of leagues and a large player base? Preferably a PC that costs no more than £500 aswell.

You don't need an actual gaming PC, as FM doesn't rely on high end graphics cards. Just get yourself something with at least 16GB ram and a really good processor. As an example, I got this laptop in the summer and it plays FM24 really smoothly with the 130k players loaded in this save. 👍 amzn.to/3Qts2EF

I've really enjoyed playing in Japan. Most of the other licenses are in the game now as well, including Gifu. I think they just had some trouble with one or two individual clubs. 👍
