My unboxing and review of a brand new FMGammon 'Mete VIP' backgammon set, bearing the first name of FMGammon co-founder Mete Topcuoglu, shipped to my home from Istanbul, Turkey, with the mammoth package arriving a ridiculous four days after shipment. The board was encased in styrofoam, and double-wrapped in bubble wrap. The packaging is really top-notch and makes it clear that FMGammon wants every set they ship to make it to its destination unscathed. The cube was wrapped in a cellophane bag for shipping, as it does not have a specific area to be stored in the bear off trays, unlike my 2020 'Hamdi' board, unboxed and reviewed in a later video.
This set has finger-dished blue and white checkers that I picked out of a few different options, along with a scoreboard (a fine added feature for tournament players), a carrying case, and a really nice wood doubling cube with a removable lid that holds two sets of 14mm precision dice. FMGammon also sent a unique COVID-19 mask, which is a really nice touch. Bravo!
This board, like many of FMGammon's higher-end boards, is constructed out of solid beechwood, and weighs a gargantuan 14 pounds or so. Solid construction wood framing, and a felt playing surface with gorgeous blue and orange points that appear to be sewn into the playing surface, but which are actually fully printed felt, leaving the playing surface as smooth as a baby's butt.
The dice cups are solid wood, and have a material inside that dampens the sound of shaking dice and gives a very warm, soft sound. The checkers meet the interior wood frame of the playing surface, producing an incredibly rich 'click' with each move of the checkers that becomes hypnotic! I love the sound of moving the checkers, but without the clattering of dice hitting a wood playing surface.
FM's customer service is fantastic, with my new friend Onur Ihtiyar answering all the questions I had about the board, the company, and providing information on the shipping, which was incredibly swift, via FedEx. Unlike other boards I've received from Europe, which sat in US Customs for weeks, FMGammon boards come straight to your home in mere days!
I could not be happier with this beautiful and well-constructed backgammon board! This is a 'keeper' for sure and my favorite board overall.
FMGammon boards are available on eBay, and also on their website (fmgammon.com), where different boards can be customized to your specifications as to size, playing surface and pip colors, checkers, dice, etc. In order to obtain the 'wood grain' effect on the playing surface of a custom-designed board (like Marc Olsen's version of this exact board), reach out to FM staff, as that 'Taki' color effect is not currently available on the FM website's 'board builder' function.

Amazing board, I have the exact model! Just with the older checkers, which are inferior to the new handmade finger dish checkers. The combination of the felt surface and wood frame is just the nuts in my opinion :) Congratulations on yet an amazing board! Best regards, Marc Olsen

Hi! Thanks for your video! You have a beautiful board! I bought my fm board in may. It’s a mahagony and I totally can conform and understand your excitement! (especially about the sound...)I have the older checkers-which are also beautiful! These Boards are the most beautiful and solid Boards I know and the company is great! Although I have to admit that it’s a little sad to see a guy sitting almost alone in front of his new dream bg board....(same here) but someday COVID is under control - than we all can play on our new boards....it will be a blast! Yes, I look forward to being able to play 'over the board' with friends whenever I want. Currently, where I live in Northern California, restaurants have no outdoor seating, so there is nowhere to play outside, pretty much. Good luck with your board in 2021!

This is a beautiful board, and has been redesigned to include a slot for the doubling cube. It also now has interchangeable surfaces, which is like having two boards in one. Great choice! Cheers!

You could have spent half an hour just getting through that incredible wrapper! Thanks for doing these reviews - you are certainly giving people useful information on baords in the $400-$600 range. I hope you can eventually do a review of a P-40 board as well. I don't know why, but they're kind of fascinating. Maybe because they seem so futuristic, or is that they seem very sterile? This wooden board does have a beautiful sound to it, no doubt. Good job!

John! I actually cut out quite a bit of video of me struggling to unwrap this board! I appreciate FMGammon's efforts to make sure their boards arrive in perfect shape, though. I'm ambivalent about the P-40 board, because of the metallic 'clatter' that seems very different than the rich wood tone produced by this gorgeous board. And you're right, the P-40 does seem a bit 'sterile,' but professionals really seem to like them, as well as the Gammoner boards from Germany, which are the Rolls-Royce of backgammon boards.

Jeremy - That’s a first, but I totally agree with you! Not only that, but you could literally put the Mets insignia on the playing surface of this board! The set is fully customizable! My new friend, Onur, who works with FMGammon, has a Yankees logo on the playing surface of his personal board. Swear to god. These boards are simply the best. I encourage you to consider getting one, for yourself, or a friend/family member. I’m going to get another FM board that I plan to give to a friend of mine next year. Cheers!

Great video. These are truly beautiful. Do the dished checkers stack up nicely or are the a little unstable vs the flat checkers? Which do you like more and why? I’m making my own board and will be purchasing checkers, doubling cube, dice etc. I like the doubling cube from FM Gammon. May I also ask you what size dice fit into the doubling cube? Thank you!

Hi, Michael, thanks for the comment and questions. This is a truly beautiful board, even the woodwork on the corners is impressive. I like the fish checkers very much, I think more than flat checkers. They just look better, and they fit really well across the board when stacked. Good luck with your board and accessories. This cube holds dice up to 16mm or even larger, though I wouldn’t go much bigger with these dice cups. Cheers!

With 20/20 hindsight, I can see that a couple of my moves in this video are drastic BLUNDERS! My excuse would be that I’m distracted, of course, but it’s all in good fun. I’m only an advanced beginner anyway, if there is such a thing. Can you spot my worst blunder?

YOu should have hit the checker on 4 point & made an anchor while playing for your daughter. Anchors at 6-5-4 points are very strong especially when the other side is empty.

@@onurihtiyar3889 - What about White's roll of aces? Justin only brings down one checker on his five point, though he does make an advance anchor inside blue's home board. Error? Blunder? I don't have the tech skills to find out!

@@DavidKlausa - David, thanks for this analysis! I just finished running it through XG myself, and you're right, they're both massive blunders. My 3-2 play for blue was HORRENDOUS! I claim *distraction* from being filmed, which doesn't bode well for playing in any tournaments with anyone else around.

Thomas- I hear you, and I’ve definitely looked at the P-40 website before. Other than the fact that the board costs about $1,000, I’d love to try one out. I have had some communications with Phil Simborg, who is affiliated with the company (I’m not sure of his role), so perhaps I’ll try to work something out. Personally, I’m not a fan of the metallic sound the board produces, but it is certainly a popular board with professionals. You should check out the FMGammon boards, though. They’re VERY nice.

Hey Justin! Your videos are terrific. I think I’ve watched all of them. I’m thinking of buying a premium board. Which do you like better, FM Gammon or Gammoner? I love the warm sound of the wood on the FM Gammon.

John, thanks for watching my videos and for your question. As you likely know from my videos, I love the warm sounds of the wood on the FM boards I own. Honestly, I would go with an FM board for a couple reasons. First, they are a bit more reasonably priced than Gammoner boards. Second, you could purchase an FM board and receive it via FedEx very quickly. As far as I am aware, a custom Gammoner board will take several weeks to be made and shipped to you (perhaps 60-90 days or longer 😮). I love my FM boards and I like the company and the people that run it very much. The owner of the company invited me to Istanbul in 2022 and gave me a hotel room for the duration of my stay - a class act. Let me know if you have any other questions. I recommend the Onur board (named after a friend of mine who works with FM and with whom I played doubles with in Istanbul). The Mete board is also gorgeous; I’m not sure exactly how it differs from the Onur board, but make sure to specify the playing surfaces and checkers you want when you order. Of course, the same would apply to a Gammoner in terms of designing your custom playing surface and checkers. Hope this helps and good luck! 🙌🏼🎲🎲🏆

Victor, Thank you for the comment, and your interesting question. In terms of backgammon strategy/instruction books, the one that I seem to keep turning to for reference is Conquering Backgammon, by Ed Rosenblum. It's a fairly new book, first published in 2015, with a second edition recently released in 2019. It's chock-full of information, tables, problems, and has an excellent bibliography. I highly recommend it. I purchased my copy on eBay for a mere $16, with free shipping. In terms of really useful strategy books that I think have really upped my gameplay, I have to recommend Michy's Opening Concepts. It's simply the most useful resource for improving one's game in the opening moves, and has a lot of concepts that are also useful in the middle game. I have Michy's Endgame Technique as well, but I haven't really delved into it, yet, as I'm slowly improving my game from the opening onward (at least that's what I would 'like' to believe!). Justin, did they reduce the thickness of the checkers to make room for the cube, or make the board larger?

Chris, I’m not sure how to answer that question, because the Mete board was redesigned after I received this board. The new design includes a slot for the cube, and I believe the checkers used are the same as always, which measure around 11mm in thickness. So, I suspect that FM likely increased the board size a hair, to make room for the cube slot, but I simply don’t know. What I do know is that the current Mete board (and the similar Onur board) are gorgeous and sound amazing. Cheers! 🌈

Thomas - Good question about how best to protect your backgammon set. I know that I have seen backgammon carry bags at GammonStuff dot com, but the bags are $115 (nice bags, but a bit steep on the price). I don’t believe FMGammon sells the black vinyl bags in this video separately, but it certainly wouldn’t hurt to ask them. Email address is on their website. I also know that FTH Backgammon sells a basic board covering with snap closure. You can look for that on FTH’s Facebook entry of Aug. 12, 2020. Good luck!

Jesse - Interesting question and basically, I approached the owners of P-40 about acquiring a board at a reduced price, in exchange for producing a detailed review like this. They declined. Truth is, while the P-40 is popular with some backgammon players, I don’t think I’d like it that much. I’ve watched a lot of tournament footage played on P-40s, and they seem very metallic, clackety and loud. I’ve really fallen in love with the wood frame /cotton felt surface of these Turkish boards. Future reviews will be wool felt boards like FTH, different from this board, quieter, and certainly *NOT* metallic sounding. Stay tuned!

Vatan - The surface is most like the Wycliffe Bros. board, because it is a padded *felt* playing surface, with a nice sound, and smooth details. Many boards have this fabric surface. My Crisloid board is very different, with a *cork* playing surface that is unique.

Adam, I purchased this board from FMGammon in 2020. They changed the design of the board sometime later to include a slot for the doubling cube. As you can see, this board does not have such a slot for the cube. It’s a beautiful board with lovely tones and checkers. The current Mete and Onur boards from FM are at least as lovely as this board, if not more so, since they have inter-changeable surfaces and a slot for the cube. Cheers! ✨🎲🎲✨

Vatan! I believe the surface is a cotton felt. It is soft, with a slight marbling, and has the printed sewing marks that I mention in the video. It’s lovely. You should buy an FMGammon board, they are wonderful!

as Justin mentions, it is a special cloth which makes the checker action extremely fast and very smooth. the original cloth is off white and everything is laser printed which makes the color combinations limitless

@turkiye vatan - Vatan, you are correct. Not the same, but very similar. The FM board surface is smoother, and has the printed stitching. Both are very nice, but I prefer to beautiful sound of the checkers on the FM’s Beechwood frame. Cheers! 🎲🎲✨

Vatan: You’re correct, the checkers are very similar to Crisloid checkers. FMGammon makes these checkers in Turkey, however. I have another set coming from FM, in blue and gold, the colors of Fenerbahçe, though I’m a fan of Galatasaray.
