However, embolism, specifically pulmonary embolism, is often classified as a direct cause of maternal death in many medical references. Pre-eclampsia, while a severe and potentially life-threatening condition, can lead to complications such as eclampsia or HELLP syndrome, which are the direct causes of death. Therefore, the answer focuses on embolism as the more immediate direct cause.
