I was born in 1951, and I have often quipped that my first words were not Mama, but Down with the patriarchy! 😊 I fought the restrictions for girls constantly, and when I was old enough to know, it sparked great empathy for the Civil Rights movement. I am but a few years younger than Ms. Faust and grew up and still live in the deep south. Living through those times and experiencing what was going on is something our younger people cannot fully grasp. She is such a brilliant communicator and I hope to read her book soon. It galls me to see so many of our fellow citizens be duped into wanting to go backwards in time to a very dark and vile place in our history as if it would be something good. We must strive forward and continue to preserve the hard won progress since those times. If every person is not afforded the exact same human and civil rights as the next person, then we have failed as a society.

Wow - I have to read this - her words resonate with me. I've often said that learning is painful, but it's short lived if we stay at it and we grow stronger from it. I had my first stand as a environmental activist at age 10 when I refused to burn the garbage at my family's rural upstate NY farm in 1966. I've been working on that everywhere I've lived since. Now I'm in Florida and the fight seems unwinnable. Though illegal, people burn everything from couches and tires to TVs in their front yards, no less. Absolutely nuts, but so are their seditionist flags and now anti-American laws that support ignorance, inculcation, and anger. I was a teacher here, now retired. I miss it, but could no way return to a classroom here, not even as a volunteer. I taught elementary grades, sometimes just History. No way could I lie or omit the truth. Necessary trouble - exactly so.

"The notion that nothing you learn should make you feel uncomfortable." This notion is what authoritarians desire. It means no change. It means stasis, which authoritarianism produces. True learning creates change, innovation and a sense of a better future. It takes strong and brave people to learn and change. This is part of the responsibility of a citizen of a democracy.
@nebtheweb8885
@nebtheweb8885 11 месяцев назад
Authoritarians want to take us backwards, definately not forward, back to the late 19th century and before if they have their way. That being said, authoritarianism when mixed with over zelous religious conservatism are how countries end up with Popes, Ayatollas, Talibans, and or any other lifetime-appointed dictator like Little Kim, Furors (Hitler), Sadam Hussain, Omar Kadafe, Stalin, B. Mussolini, Putin , and Mango Mussolini, the wannabe dictator of the USA. That last guy is a clear and present danger as is that book banning fool of a governor in Florida.

What a fantastic interview! This is a classic! Thank you, Lawrence O'Donnell for giving us the chance to hear this remarkable scholar, Drew Gilpin Faust.

I experienced the great benefit of learning to read from my next door neighbor--who was a teacher in a Friends school and herself a Quaker woman in my Quaker established home town of Woodbury, New Jersey, back when it really mattered. Thank you, Mrs. Grace Fuller.

Lawrence, thanks for the interview with this prescient Harvard President. There is no limitation to the knowledge we can acquire each day. Unless I learn something new each day, I will be bored with life, and quite lifeless, lethargic and unenthusiastic 😊

My New Hampshire born niece has just celebrated her 40th birthday. She has also, because of a job opportunity for her husband, moved to Alabama. I'm going to send her that book.

If you are looking for the definition of a saint, this awesome lady is the answer. She reminds me of my grandma Angelina, who just doesn’t know how to hate. Shout out to ❤ all the lovers.
