He did indeed! That originally wasn't part of the script and the balloons were just to hide the background and add colour, so when they popped, it worked perfectly!

Mostly likely. It's a normal reaction to loud and unexpected noises. It the human body's primitive instinct to protect again harm so loud, sudden noises are scary to the majority of people. It also coincides with the fight or flight response. In Nate's case, it was flight from the noise but some people would've screamed and then attempted to protect themselves thereby electing a fight response.
