I'm sure no one will read this, but quick rundown on the colour genetics - cream doesn't hide except under black and grey. Bay with cream will always be buckskin, chestnut with cream will always be palomino. Grey of course will hide any colour, but she would have shown the cream as a foal. As you don't know what colour Dee was as a foal, it's quite possible she has inherited the cream gene from her grandsire, through her sire, and is a buckskin grey that has also passed that cream gene onto her foal. As for the foal going grey, without knowing the colour of Dee's dam, it's likely he has a 50/50 chance of being grey. There's no sure-fire way to tell other than a genetic colour test, but grey foals will often have dark legs, grey goggles, and a more saturated colour, so it looks very possible that he will stay buckskin.

They talked about that at the end they don’t know what color she was born as and with cream in her pedigree it’s possible. Also sounds like there going to genetic test him

I don’t know if he’s bay or buckskin but it looks like he’ll retain his colour since he doesn’t have hyperpigmentation. A very exciting baby from Ms. Dee nonetheless.

Absolutely adorable! Can’t believe it was Dee who threw a buckskin- I think a great name would be Theoden, theo for short. The horse lord of Rohan from the lord of the rings, which seems fitting for a gorgeous little solid buckskin colt.

Meriadoc (Brandybuckskin.) Starts out short, gets taller; a brave and bold hobbit! Merry is a great stable name, too. Food for thought. I'm sure he'll appreciate second breakfast as well 😂

OMG I can't believe I didn't double the pun for his "last name." Should be BranDEEbuckskin 😂 (Obviously his government name would have to be Britannia's Brandybuck or something dignified like that, but you'd still *hear* "Dee" in there when the announcer (knock wood) read it out.) I also like "Merry" as a barn name for a horse out of a horse called "Delight."

I knew the stallion Silver Heaven, and his dam Bitter Lemon way back in the late 80s. Both were buckskin which we called Dun then in Ireland. I had no idea DeeDee had him in her back breeding. He was a stunning pony! Incidentally his stable name was Nicki after His breeder Nicholas O'Hare. Nick was a very knowledgeable and famous horse breeder here in Ireland.

Congrats!! I'm not a big fan of "Mowgli" as Kipling invented it to mean "lacking fur" in The Jungle Book... But someone suggested Theoden (Theo for short ) which fits with your Lord of the Ring theme! And I think he looks like a Theo!! Someone else suggested Britannia's delight as a show name and I'm also obsessed with that!! Looking forward to hearing what you decide on 😄

As I understand it, if Dee's heterozygous gray, the little lad has a 50% chance of going gray; if she was born buckskin, he has a 50% chance of inheriting the cream dilution. Perhaps a colour test is in his future? I kind of like Goldwine Britannia as a show name, especially if he's buckskin. (Ok, Goldwine was not one of the better-known kings of Rohan but it still has a nice ring to it, and you already have one Rohirric royal name in the yard with Brego!)

Equine color genetics enthusiast here. Grey is basically a "mask" over the true color of a horse, and it's a dominant gene. It means that the horse only needs one copy of it to go grey. Depending on if Dee has one or two copies, the foal has at least 50% chance to go grey. Also, since foals are usually born lighter (but not always) than what they will look like later in life, it's really hard to tell if he will be bay or buckskin, especially in the stable lighting. My bet is that he'll be light bay, but there's certainly a big chance of him being buckskin, since there are a lot of cream gene carriers in Dee's pedigree. Either way, can't wait for more updates!

Now, as an Éomer fan I have to suggest that as a name, but the Rohirrim weren’t the only famed horsemen in LotR - the men of Númenor were also well known for the connection they had with their horses! With that in mind … Anárion means ‘son of the sun’ and I think that would be super cute for a buckskin and one whose mother is so precious to you!

Not to mention it was the line of Anarion, which all future kings of Gondor come from in the book mythos. And his brother is buried beneath The White Tree of Gondor, which again, very fitting considering Dee's colouring ^^.

Ooh you came to the right person, may I suggest Anarion? Anárion was the youngest son of Elendil, the High King of Arnor and Gondor. He and his brother Isildur jointly ruled Gondor, while their father dwelt in the North. Following his father's death during the Siege of Barad-dûr, and Isildur's death at the Disaster of the Gladden Fields, the kingship of Gondor was committed to the line of Anárion beginning with his son, Meneldil. Which I think with a horse like Dee is so fitting ^^. He's a stunning boy, and I am so excited to see where he goes in life ^^.

Shadowfax was capable of comprehending human speech and was said to run faster than the wind" A name with lovely story on LOTR. Shadowfax's coat is described as silvery-grey in daylight, and hardly visible at night.

** edit to add a really off topic note. Had to look up Dee on all breed, then got snoopy and looked up Wilma and Jam. Wilma and Dee both share Silver Cloud back a few generations. So theyre distantly related. He can be buckskin if Dee was, but with as hyperpigmented as he is at birth I would expect him to turn gray. I'd definitely do a color test if I was you. Congratulations on your little colt! Cant wait to see how he grows up. I'm excited for his name, i love names.

If you're looking for LotR related names, take a look at the Silmarillion, there are so many more names that sound nice and have a cool meaning as well, especially if you look at the elvish names. When I need a name for a character or the horse of a character I usually look through elvish dictionaries because I find that even though if it translates to only one word like "tree" the elvish words sound quite beautiful and like an actual name ^^

Brittania's Cygnet (young swan) or Signet (the ring that bore the seal and stamp of the King, for instance, for signing and sealing important declarations). Something came to mind when I saw that the baby was so tiny (and perfect). I listened to a man who was talking about draft crosses, and he said that mares, bred to bigger stallions, have the ability to limit somehow, the size of the baby, then the baby catches up after it's born. Homestead Horsemanship, is quite knowledgeable about it. Congratulations. He's such a pretty boy. He'll be a show-off, for sure!

Congratulations! Some name ideas; Britannia's Delight is the obvious one to combine both show names of Marley & Dee but you could also go with Britannia's Joy (so similar to Delight but not exactly the same. There's Common Britannia but not sure if that's special enough for this boy! In terms of stable names there's Arod (or just Rod for short) who was a horse given to Legolas by Eomer. There's Roheryn who was a gift from Aragorn to Arwen - could be shortened to just Ro or you could even just go with Rohan which was the home of the Rohirrim or Horse-Lords from Lord of the Rings. Also I don't know if you ever read the Narnia books as a kid but there's one all about horses - the main character is a horse called Bree but that might be a bit too close to Dee's name?
