Great stuff guys--there's so many thing you can do with this pattern like inserting a rattle, or tie a fly lip on it and fish it will a wet tip/full sink fly line, or cut it into segments and use the new fish spines/segmented foam fly (which you can also use a sinking fly line and you have an instant jerk bait fly and use fly lips/magic heads on this pattern), or use only the top half segments of the foam on your fly so that it sits right on the surface film, the list goes on and on.

I am all for using whatever catches the fish you want but there is a point when it is no longer fly tying and becomes lure making. Other than using a fly rod to cast it because it is so light, I cannot see calling it a fly. Great job though constructing it and very clever. I would use it in a heartbeat to fish with.
Joe Aimetti everyone has their own opinions. However balsa and foam is used on many flies. In reality flies are actually lures as well. But lures can’t be casted by a fly rod.
Nice Rapala... Just kidding, seriously that's a beautiful job. Larry Dalhberg had a similar floating minnow a long time ago using styrofoam and braided tubing. I loved tying and especially painting them. I used everglow tubing that had a base color then sharpies to paint. Nail polish was the top coat. If you were careful you could bleed the colors with some cool effects. Well done Kiley, nice to see the next generation improve on things, good luck with your products!

Looks good, seems fun to tie, but how practical is this fly? You added a lot of lead. Then there is the weight of the finishing glue. I am thinking that I would need to go up one or two rod weights to be comfortable casting that fly for any amount of time. Personally, I enjoy going lighter on my rods, not heavier. I love your innovation, maybe that fly isn't as heavy as I think?
FlyfisherSkor its not as heavy as one might think. The weight is necessary to offset the buoyancy of the foam and give it the side to side action. Glad you like it!
Try in weighting it and use it on a fast sink line and fish it booby nymph style a cross the bottom let the fly line sink first when you feel the line touch bottom leave for a few seconds then start a slow retrieve pause the fry pattern rises then retrieve stop and start again you can lengthen or short the time between pauses and retrieves use slow retrieves when the water temp is cold and long to short pauses the length of leader no longer than 2ft total length may be as short as 18". The longest total length of the leader should be is 3ft how the method work's is as you retrieve the the fry pattern you draw it to the bottom stop retrieving and the fry pattern rises slowly it is a this point of the pause the fry pattern is deadly hope this help's

silknfeathers - Pick up an issue of Flytyer magazine and then talk to me about how this pattern somehow - "crosses the boundary." You'll see more flies with, (I think it was Dave Whitlock who said something like) - "with elbows, eyeballs and arseholes" as this is simply the new thing in fly tying evolution. This is just a really nice innovative foam pattern in my opinion - especially given where the craft has gone in the last decade. I look forward to experimenting with this one for largemouth and striped bass. It looks great.

ET you can fish it both ways. Intermediate line or floating line. Sinking line in my opinion can make for difficult casting. Also if you experiment with weighting and thinner foam you can make the fly slow sink too. They are fun and I usually make them differently in batches of six for different effects. Too little weight can cause they to ride sideways which works good too but makes it different.
