@@janajamer734 IKR❣️ It's been an exhausting season for them at SWFL, with having to fight through two hurricanes and a nest rebuild. But, they were determined to do it! That's their lesson. Here, at this nest, Jackie and Shadow just went through a snowstorm right when she was laying eggs. God bless her! Now the pesky Ravens have been disturbing their peace. But, that's life! @@CuriousCat7 I was just browsing thru RU-vid when a recommendation came up to watch Big Bear Bald Eagles in late fall, and of course once eggs were laid and when that Lil' Bobblehead Birdie of Prey hatched... I was hooked! And as they say... tHa rest is history. Then once Princess Spirit fledged and left tHa nest for good, I was so 💔! That's when I started watching other Eagle Cams trying to fill that void I had, only to get attached to other Eaglets, then after fledgling, eventually left or got chased away. Then 💔all over again. Started watching different Birdie Cams and now I'm just so outta control! But it's rewarding and a privilege to be able to witness nesting behaviors and their family dynamics. Sometimes it's difficult to watch, sometimes it's not. Then tHa strangest story I ever came across was @ GROWL'S Eagle Cam B.C.,when Mama Eagle brought to their nest a Hawklet to feed their Eaglet, Junior. And as you know a true miracle happened! Hawklet was smart, started begging for food and her status changed from abduction to adoption! Because NURTURE prevailed over NATURE which took control of tHa situation still. Of course 💔once again when I found out that Junior had died when he came in contact with tHa Hydro Power Lines and was electrocuted. Then I experienced an angry rage emotion when I found out that this had happened previously to other GROWL'S Raptors and we're promised to eradicate tHa danger and hadn't! I had no idea that I had so much compassion for these birdies!💞 I found out that my eyeballs are directly attached to my heart strings! @SW FL Eagle Cam, Lil' Birdie of Prey Eaglet E-22 is gonna start screaming loudly whenever it sees a gigantic Catfish coming in with Papa M. I'm sure it's so DONE with having prey dropped on its cranium, being stepped on, or being bonked, covered in grasses, etc! (Just like Spirit was whenever Mama Jackie or Papa Shadow brought in a WONKY stick, coz they'd cracked her in her cranium almost every time)! In my opinion only, I've wondered if Papa M has had any slight persistent post concussion symptoms from all those GHO attacks? I've also commented asking if tHa Pritchett's can remotely turn off tHa light on tHa attic closest to tHa tree trunk to see if that'll help keep tHa 🎯 off him? H & M (& now tHa E's) have experienced Hurricane Ian and Hurricane Nichole, right? Can you just imagine experiencing that insanity? It's been an exhausting season for us Aunties and Uncles to just observe! One for sure thing I've learned is that living to be a Bald Eagle is no easy task from tHa get go! It's absolutely an amazing miracle that we have any Birdies (Raptors, Hawks, Owls, Black Storks, Albies, etc.) that make it to adulthood! Curious Cat... @@janajamer734 Hi Jana Jamer❣️ Loved your "jam packed" reply! 😘 Like so many of us, the best things in life show up, when we are busy doing other things. I started watching eagles when M15 came into Harriet's life. I had heard about cams back then but hadn't explored until I was up one night and had things on my mind. So, I looked them up and that search led me to the SWFL cam which I accessed through the Pritchett Real Estate website. It was basically the eagles and me, at first, until I eventually opened the chat box and began my education. And, as you stated, we do get "hooked"! Lol! I didn't have that much time to go exploring, but, it actually served me well to concentrate on the one nest. Each day/night I would go to check in and they always had info on how many food items were brought in, etc. The chat had links to videos from Lady Hawk and wskrsnwings, Vicki, who films from the ground. It also had a link to the Hancock Wildlife Forum which provided screen shots and a summary of the day's highlights which opened up a new avenue of learning, etc. From there, as you point out... tha rest is history! The story of Junior and Malala was dramatic, intense, heartwarming and, unfortunately, very heartbreaking. 💔 I was very absorbed in that nest because of the situation which was made even more fascinating as Junior had eliminated its own sibling and then turned into a gentle giant to a helpless little hawklet that it fed, befriended, and, cared for by allopreening. Truly, an astounding sight! We know that eaglets will kill each other, if necessary, for food and don't feed each other. So, seeing an eaglet and its parents feeding a hawklet was awesome!! I was speaking on the phone when the notification came through of the video announcing the bad news about Junior. Honestly, I gasped and couldn't breathe, giving my friend a fright! We all brace ourselves for their departure into the world, but, that sadness is tempered with the hope and good wishes that they survive and have a happy life. Which, unfortunately, only about 50% of them get a chance to do, and make it passed their first birthday. A sad statistic. So, yes, an eagle's life is definitely trying and challenging. That's why we are so joyful when we see the couples return each season to have another clutch and breathe a sigh of relief that they made it through. I agree that viewing nests has its good and bad moments and the "konking and bonking" can be hard to watch. When you see the bonking go to the extreme and the innocent one hasn't got a chance of surviving, it is an awakening moment that we are watching reality in its "realist" form. Not scripted and made to grab an audience into the drama. But, real life circumstances for the birds we love so very much. It's nice to go from nest to nest each day to check in on our favorites, but, with that comes the multiplication of the tension, mixed with the joys. That has become the "line in the sand" for many and they wind up stepping away because it becomes a negative force on their own health and happiness. So, everyone, hopefully, does this activity bearing this in mind. Reading the comments on videos where the bonking is disturbing, basically, tells the whole story of just how difficult it is to observe the harder parts of an eaglet's life. And, of course, emphasizes just how hard they do have it, at times. I'm not a doctor, but, I don't imagine all the hits in the head that M15 and Harriet have taken from owl strike incidents is something that has zero impact on their health and balance, etc., but, just how much or how long it lasts is a question. That's where watching other nests is a help, because, we see that it's not uncommon for them to konk each other with sticks and step on each other while navigating the nest. With that said, it does seem that M15's landings and food deliveries, this season, have been a little more "off target" 🙀 than usual! Let's just pray it's only our imagination. The light that we see at night on cams isn't really "a light". If you were at the nest in person, it would be dark. Ordinary cameras only photograph what our eyes can see. The cams are equipped with advanced capabilities and use IR technology (infrared) that allows sight through interpretation of heat patterns of objects to display images. Much like the military uses when performing night raids, etc. That's why there is no color besides shades of black/white and the greys in-between. You can explore it, if you are fascinated by how it works at a deeper level, but, the main point is that it is invisible to those who cannot see that end of the color spectrum with their naked eye. Humans and eagles fall into that category. Owls don't need the help. They have excellent night vision so the technology would offer them nothing they aren't already built and designed to do. Which is one of the reasons why the owls can do their striking so effectively at night. They do have night vision capabilities. Eagles can see very keenly for long distances in the daylight but their night vision is about what ours would be. The ambient lighting in the nest location, provided by the moon and lights in the area, are a big help to M15 so that he can find his bearings when knocked off his perch and allow him to fly without hitting something. But, the Owl, being nocturnal, can see very clearly, as it needs to in order to hunt for food at night and owls sleep during the day. Another factor is that the owls fly silently so the eagles can't hear them approaching until they are right on top of them. The way their wings are designed allows this silent flight so it can capture its prey but is not good for the eagles. Going back to the Junior story, the physical characteristics of Malala might have been a saving factor, as the hawklet has a hooked beak and actually looked like a mini-eagle-mom at that stage of its life. It all is a fabulous journey and I hope you don't allow the "out of control" aspect to dampen your spirit! TC and I pray you have a wonderful, blessed weekend! 🙏😻🦅💕
