Thanks. I guess it's fitting, for the following reasons: -when it was first encountered in the war, it came as a nasty surprise to the British -it's sturdy -hits like a truck (hence the nickname "Butcher Bird") There could be more. These two are the first ones to come up.

Outstanding video, but doesn’t do justice to the sound of the aircraft. The FW was at the 2015 Omaka Classic Fighters air show and, on the Friday - practice day - was the first act after lunch. It was great while it lasted and the sound of the aircraft was pure magic. Then it landed and things went very pear-shaped. During the roll-out, it was hit by a sudden wind change and when the pilot applied the brakes, only the left side worked. One huge ground loop later, the aircraft was on its belly, with the undercarriage wrecked. They put it on a trailer and towed it away to the hangar. It can be repaired and will be back in the air eventually.

@seriousgoat76

the hawker typhoon was a lot better than the 190 in a dive and turning and the later models carried 4 hispanos.
@benfromsk7740
@benfromsk7740 9 лет назад
Its MAGIC the typhoon was not a multirole fighter, it was used as a ground attack aircraft after it was discovered it was a terrible dogfighter and had poor mid and high level performance. the typhoon was better in a dive, pending it didn't break apart. (do research on their tail problems). Also, the Typhoon pilot had to always be on oxygen as carbon monoxide would seep into the cockpit, this problem was never resolved. (bad, bad, bad design feature) Turning, different story. the FW-190 was a lot better at mid and high altitudes, below 10,000 feet they were about the same. Controls at high speed for the Typhoon were not pilot friendly, they were quite heavy, so it took a good pilot to fly it well. many called it a "beast" to fly. The FW-190 on the other hand had very light controls thanks to them being electrically assisted (the first fighter to feature this). the original typhoons equipped with 12 .303 MG's were withdrawn almost immediately in favor of the 4x20mm set up. FW-190's had a 4x20mm + 2x 7.92/13mm MG setup for many of the variants. www.warbird.info/#!hawker-typhoon/c193y The Typhoon was not a good fighter at all, which is why they were used almost exclusively as ground attack aircraft. around 3,000 were made during WWII and they are only credited with 249 air to air victories. to put that into perspective, there are individual FW-190 pilots with more victories than the entire RAF's typhoon pilots. it really comes into perspective when you look at the USAF's 'multirole' P-47 had over 3,700 air to air victories in Europe. the Typhoon was a specialized low altitude plane, it was originally designed as a high altitude bomber interceptor, which it was a failure at. (the wing was too thick and the design did not lend to high altitude performance of any kind, I don't know what the designer was thinking...) the P-47 on the other hand was a true multirole, like the FW-190 variants in that it performed well at all altitudes and for the tasks it was given. all that said, the Typhoon was a great ground attack aircraft and was invaluable for the allies and the Tempest later resolved many of the Typhoon's shortcomings.

Ben Wieben Explain to me in what way the 190 was a multi-role fighter but the P-38 was not.
@benfromsk7740
@benfromsk7740 9 лет назад
antred11 never said anything about the P-38 not being multi role. the P-38 is not in the same classification of aircraft as the FW-190 or P-47 in that the P-38 is classed as a heavy fighter. The FW-190 and P-47 are classed as fighters. I could see you being nit-picky regarding perhaps that the P-38 prototype flew before the FW-190 prototype, too which I'd respond, the BF-110 which was designed for the same role as the P-38 (heavy fighter) first flew 3 years prior to the P-38 ever flying. The BF-110 was also multi-role and an all altitude aircraft as well.

Are these radial engines relatively low maintenance compared to an Me109 or Mustang?
@FiveCentsPlease
@FiveCentsPlease 7 лет назад
+Matt Robinson There different service intervals for each engine. For the Merlin engine, it has been used continuously since the war and has had many improvements which increased the service interval to over 700 hours. If the engine is used heavily in aggressive air show flying, it may new overhaul sooner than 700 hours. The Me-109 engine is the same as the wartime specs with service items required every 100, 200, and 600 hours, which on a rare engine with few parts available can get very expensive. Perhaps over time the Me-109 engines will see improvements also. I think is is roughly similar to the BMW radial engine. However, the ASh-82 radial used on the replicas was still in production until the 1970s and I think the newer TBO overhaul hours is up to 1200 hours now..
@dirkschlebusch-sp3hm
@dirkschlebusch-sp3hm Год назад
But the name "Butcher Bird" has a different origin than most people think. Fighter-bomber squadrons were called "Schlachtflieger" in German, shortening as "Schlächter" or "Butcher" in English. In addition to its role as an interceptor, the FW 190 A6 was also used as a low-flying ground attack aircraft with bombs. That's actually where the name "Schlachtvogel" - Butcher Bird came from. The term "Schlacht" comes from :Schlachtfeld "- Battlefield . As a synonym, the term "Schlachtfeld" stands for slaughter in combat. (This is not a glorification, but a simple statement of what is happening on a battlefield. A senseless slaughter). It is difficult to translate into English because it is typical of the German language to use one word for many terms that describes the actual event.

@FiveCentsPlease
@FiveCentsPlease 9 лет назад
Yes, but most owners do not conduct many cross-country flights due to the wear and tear on the aircraft. Engine overhauls and fuel consumption are VERY expensive for the WW2 aircraft. Major flying museums such as the CAF and Collings Foundation do travel with their aircraft across the US every year.

I find the engine sounds very much like a WW1 radial.I would have thought by WW2 the engine would have a faster sound to it.Still,I like the throaty rasp it makes...

Noel Mintern the engine is not original in this plane. it's a soviet engine, not a german. maybe you hear that. lol

Is this a new build 190 with the Ash-82, or an original with BMW 801?

Impressive as hell. I'm amazed that they've actually been able to restore some FWs to flying condition. I gotta go to NZ someday. Some really good video work to. I spent a couple of decades shooting stills at airshows, but there are very few within an affordable distance for me anymore. Great cam work though.
@WrUSasu

It is no restoration but a totally new aircraft, the N in A8/N stands for Nachbau or replica in english. There are some A8/N's from Flugwerk in the US and the original one is at the FHC.

saburu sakai The Flugwerk Fw190s was an interesting aviation project to build Fw190 replicas and offer them to buyers in semi-kit form. They are patterned after the A-8 but a few changes were made, including adapting the aircraft to an affordable Russian/Chinese engine to replace the very rare BMWs. Kit form allowed a lower purchase cost and lower insurance costs for the buyers, who have to complete much of the wiring, plumbing, controls, avionics, and final assembly. The project initially started with 12 new Fw190s, but increased production to 21 airframes. Only a few are currently flying and the entire project and inventory were sold off recently. They are not 100% accurate, but are as close as owners can get without finding a rare genuine example to restore. There is currently only ONE original Fw190 in flying condition in the US, with another flying original just a few years from complete.

FiveCentsPlease thanx for that info. I did not know that the kits were that popular, or were totally new AC. The BMW engine sure as blazes is not practical to maintain. I hope I get to see one fly sometime.

The "Butcher Bird" as the U.S. And Brits called them. Many planes lost to the guns/cannons of the 190 until the P-51 Mustangs turned the tide. Glad many are still around by being restored or custom built to show our future generations. WW2 is becoming a neglected subject in our schools here in U.S as we dwelled more on our Civil War. Flying history are these planes :)

runner4life1984 P-51 turn the tide? No. :) The Spitfire IX was a good encounter to the fw-s from 1942 way before the mustangs.

+Balázs Jávor Look up how many Spitfires were lost to F-w-190 at the Dieppe disaster in 1942. Except for recon models, the Spitfire had no range.
@patrickhultin9998
@patrickhultin9998 8 лет назад
Yeah, they were lost because the 190 were superior to the mk V. But weren't superior to the mk IX.
@richardbushey2666
@richardbushey2666 3 года назад
@@rampking1 , exactly. The FW 190 outclassed the Spitfire V in nearly all flight peramators . The D Dora version was as good or better than the P-51 Mustang according to german pilots who flew them.

The Me-109 is sexier looking, but I have heard this was a great aircraft for reliability and performance!
@chaosbreaker657
@chaosbreaker657 6 лет назад
The 109 was the high-performance racehorse of the Luftwaffe, while the 190 was the rugged and reliable workhorse. Both have their merits, but I'd lean more on the 190. There's a video briefly showing that German ace Gunther Rall comparing the 109 and the 190. It's here somewhere in RU-vid.
