Have owned my ST2 for just over 6 years (October 2012 - bought it right when it first came out). Currently have 103k miles on it. Under warranty had both the Transmission and turbo replaced at 50k miles. Transmission had bad synchro in 2nd gear which was a pretty common issue with the early ones, turbo had unexplained catastrophic failure. Out of pocket expenses were new high pressure fuel pump (bought a used one and installed myself that was $75 repair). Also had to replace evaporative emission solenoid ($40 part installed myself). Finally a rear stabilizer link which was $15, did the other side proactively so lets say $30. Other than that just the usual tires, brakes, oil changes, broken fog light, new shocks/struts. I don’t abuse it, but i certainly have some fun with it. Always do pennzoil platinum full synthetic oil change every 5k miles and always run 93 octane fuel. I got the lifetime warranty break pads the first time i changed them so I’ve had 3 sets now after only paying for one. It does eat tires pretty quickly would be my main complaint but overall very happy
Carl Griffiths quick question so the pennzoil platinum is good oil,the dealer did my first oil change free, but I’m going to do them myself from now on barley reaching 10k on my 2018 st
You are lucky. I had an engine go at 55k, struts and shocks go at 33k and 60k, tie rods, ball joints, control arms, sway links and bushings all were crap after 60k miles, and I had steering rack issues still and tram lining and my center of steering was off when I got rid of it. Luckily I got into an Is 350. The focus was fun though. Very fun.
I should probably include that I had only ford racing tune, exhaust, intake, and Eibach sport springs on until they leaked second time and then went to coilovers. So that may have played roll. The ford racing tune was questionable as far as long term damage on engine. I blame it for pre ignition damage to number 1 cylinder.
Got my 2018 ST1 4 months ago, have 5k miles on it. My Dad bought me a brand new Mercury Comet in 1970 with a manual, 4 speed (red with black interior). Now 49 years later I own a 2018 Ford ST Chili Pepper Red with black interior, it's FUN too! Didn't know it was such a popular little car until I read a bunch of reviews on RU-vid. I'm an old lady now, but I still like the stick shift (cause I refuse to pay $5k for a no good automatic transmission, rebuild). Anyhow, it's fun to drive 0 to 60 in less than 6 seconds. And I need a fast little car that gets me from point A to B pretty fast, if need be.
It's been about 7 months since I bought my '17 ST, and I constantly have moments where I think to myself, "I fuckin' love this car!" Glad to see that you're still having that feeling 3 years in. I'm not really a Ford guy, but they had something really special in the ST. Sad that they have nixed it in the US. I'll be hanging on to mine as long as I can. I really dig your videos, and I'm glad that you'll be continuing to make videos about your ST for the foreseeable future. Keep it up!
I bought my ‘17 in August of of 2017. I bought a brand new Cobra in 2003. I tell people ALL THE TIME, this car is more fun than the Cobra ever was. For me it’s the combination of torque and handling. I love driving this thing every day.
Have the Fiesta ST and I have to agree, the ST line of cars that Ford has produced are AMAZING. Sad that the US cut off production, but at least we'll have collector cars in the future. Lol
I kept the sound symposer for about a year. Then I did the delete and am SOOO much happier with the sound. Didn’t realize how trash that was until I pulled it out. You won’t regret it.
I also have a 2015 ST so she is 3.5 years old and she is my daily. I had ZERO issue since I have it. ZERO. I have a map witch gives her 275 Hp and 500 Nm, I have a Magnaflow catback and a K&N air filter. I installed SS-Tuning diffuser and side skirts and a Maxton Design front splitter. I love that car.
have you looked into an oil catch can? ecoboost engines are great but i think what theyre lacking on is their direct injections carbon build up detail. maybe in the future you can make a video on one..?
Dude, I thoroughly agree with your assessment to buy into the brand as far as aftermarket upgrades. First off, I believe one should purchase a vehicle whose performance is acceptable in stock form, then proceed with caution if you must. I've just seen too many aftermarket tunes and parts affecting the overall design in a way that can potentially make them less durable. I personally want to have my car dependable first, I need it. I don't NEED the most power I can wringe out of its neck. Thanks
Awesome video! Great point with looking for the active grille when buying a used car. I just bought a used 2013 ST and thought it was stock but turns out the previous owner had done a bunch of mods and has a Speed Performace stage 2 block. Really looking forward to driving it when the dealer is done with it!
Well Gjeebs I have had my 1st real problem with my ST3. At 73,000 miles the fuel rail sensor went bad which made the fuel pump run overtime and fried it. Both were replaced by the Ford dealer and I had them do their 3 stage valve de-gunk process for a cool $200 bucks for a total of $1000.00 hit to my wallet. Let’s not forget the 6 days it was in the shop. Rental car @ $40.00/day.....another $240.00 for a grand total of $1,240.00. Ugly. But my going on 6 years old baby runs and looks close to new and she has been extremely reliable overall. Nice video of your experience so far.
Arizona gang! Looking at either a Focus ST or Fiesta ST, really stuck on the decision as I like both. Honestly leaning towards the Fiesta, I don’t really need the room and it’s cheaper. It will also be my first manual car but I’m pretty excited either way! Thanks for the video man
Shell v power in uk is 98/99ron surprised Us/Arizona fuel is only 91....we dont seam to get issues over here with carbon build up, even running on standard 95ron fuel...my mothers Mondeo 2.0 EcoBoost which is a fusion in the USA has 140k miles and never had issues with carbon build up...I have a 2.0 diesel which I run on the shell power diesel and doesn't even blow smoke.
@Siye Boss no joke at all. I've never known any carbon build up on any car thats been enough to cause issues that has been in our family. One has just been sold after 15 years of ownership and ran as well as the day we brought it. Good quality fuel and oils and services on time or before and we don't get issues....
105k on mine, same year and color, bone stock. Zero issues, all highway miles. 3rd windshield, all maintenance done by me, never went back to the dealership.
Had a 2014 for a three year lease. Turned it in. A year later I needed a daily driver. I just bought a used 2018 with 14k. It's been great! No problems and everything in the car is tight, more so than my first. Didn't realize I'd miss it so much. Wanted to get my hands on one before they're gone for good. I always kicked myself in the ass for selling my 2005 SRT 4. Not happening this time around. And yes the front wheel drive does get tiring but this car is a a great driving experience! It's a keeper
Did my homework on a st for like 2 months between wrx bc I live in nj so we have snow here. Ended up getting a 2018 st instead with summer tires lol. I got my xj for winter thank God I didnt sell it.
I agree about buying a used ST -- they are a great deal. I got a late 2014 ST3 (built in Sept 2014) in 2017 with only 22,000 miles on it for $16k, or barely over half of it's original sticker price was. 65,000 miles now with zero issues.
Still have my 2015 and I think the same things that you mentioned. I love it !! same tune with the ford cold air intake Plugs tune with exhaust also thinking of a bigger intercooler. Want to also get a down pipe but can’t seem to find one from ford. I also try to keep it all ford. Lately I’ve also been thinking it would be nice to have a rear wheel drive or 4 wheel drive. The only thing I fine with my ST is that I’m always putting gas in it. In town driving burns a lot of gas but highway driving is excellent gas millage My car has 64400 km witch is probably in the area of what yours is at. Don’t feel like doing the math right now lol. Enjoy watching your videos keepem coming !! Thanks
I already have 16k miles on my ‘18 ST2 and have only had it for 7 months if that tells you how much I love driving this car. Can’t wait to keep racking up miles on it!
Love my 2014 ST3!! 85K trouble free FUN miles... only oil changes and winter/summer tires flips. I was car-sitting a friends 2014 Subaru WRX for 6 months @ 34K and quality on the WRX is nowhere near the quality of my ST! I am very pleasantly surprised. I have owned 11 manuals in my life, 5 Fiats(Spider850, 124, X 1/9, Brava, Spider 2000) 1 Honda Accord, 1 Alfa Romeo Spyder and 3 Mitsubishi Spyder GT's, and this ST IS THE BEST!!!
I found my ST to be so much tighter" in performance AND quality! Being a Subaru, I was surprised that the WRX was so loose performance wise and "tinny" in quality!
Mine is also a 2014 stock and "YES" I still love it. I have an extended warranty so I can't do upgrades on it right now (maybe cold air intake this year). I have 60,000 miles and hopefully, it will last well north of 100,000.
Have a 2014 ST3. Problems? Nada! Nothin! Nyet! Nope! Nah! Naw! Nein! I'm totally surprised as it's my very first domestic branded vehicle I've owned in 25-yrs. Swore off the domestics because of the experience my family had when I was a kid growing up. 'Murican cars in our experience were reliability nightmares, so when I was old enough to get my own, I wanted to get a reliable car so have had Japanese and German (I know, I know, "reliable") cars exclusively. This is also the cheapest car I've ever bought, so that it is the both the cheapest (cost and maintenance) and currently has a 100% reliability trackrecord with me. . .I'm happy. I bought the extended factory warranty with the lighting coverage also, so bumper to bumper AND the lighting group (those LED nacelles can cost a bomb if they need to be replaced for some reason), so I'm covered for 8-yrs total. Never held on to a car for 8 yrs, but I find that I'm in no rush to trade this one in just yet. Totally agree with you on the steering-wheel, I wish it were thicker like my prior Audi S4. Also agree with jonesin' for 4/all wheel drive next. I live where it snows and I gotta account for that, and I'm starting to miss a bigger car if I'm being honest. But I can't complain if I'm being honest. Nothing at all to complain about. One of the most positive ownership experiences I've ever had!
Hey gjeebs, I’m also a st owner. Given the chance to start over would you buy the ford calibration or the Cobb ap? I’m at this crossroad right now. The ford calibration gives lots of torque and moves the horsepower sooner in the rpm range. I mostly commute with this car and have a little fun here and there. Have Cobb 3” catback, getting catted downpipe. Cold air intake, cpe rmm v2. Thanks for sharing any experiences.
I just like that Ford Developed their calibration so it takes a lot of the risk out of getting a tune. Because the car is my daily I have to keep it reliable so anytime I upgrade it I consider that. If it were a second car maybe I would be more aggressive. The Cobb will give you more more feedback and is customizable where the ford calibration you just put it on and that’s it
Hey man quick questions. I have a ‘17 ST and I was wondering what torque tune you were talking about? Sounds like something I’d be very interested in! Thanks!
I wouldn’t get the warranty on a new car . It’s basically how the sales rep makes most of their commission . It adds $100 to your finance payment and you never really use it for a new car .::.
Why would u pay for a warranty on a new car? It already comes with one from the factory or maybe your talking about the extended warranties some dealers offer and if that's what u are talking about I agree 💯%
Have had my 2013 ST3 for 3 years now. 45,000 miles on it. Currently have 116,000 on it. Intake, exhaust, downpipe. Tune next. Absolutely love the thing. Just keep maintaining the vehicle and she’ll run great.
I just got one with 100,000 miles on it bone stock looks clean from what i can tell. Besides the coolent under max I cant find anything else wrong. Since 100,000 anything I should look out for ? How are they in the snow ? Mine already had aftermarket wheels
I really dig your videos mah dude. Picked up a used 14 st3 for 13k about a yr ago. I absolutely love it, went hard on the spending and tuned to stage 3 in about 2 months. Backed it down, sold my accessport (really miss my launch control though) cause I just didn't need to drive it like that on the daily. Couple things I have to point out. Ford Performance does have some decent products ,but the only issue is you're paying 3-4x the cost when other companies like Cobb do it just as well. Keep up the good work, love it.
17k on my 18 ST1 and i really like the car, my only gripes are the flimsy/dead pedal feel from factory on all 3 pedals, the high seating position makes it feel like driving a bus (this is amplified if you're a tall person), interior falls apart pretty quick, but in terms of the driving experience its incredible for the price.
wacky dinky nowadays people want to sit higher for improved visibility and so you are not getting off the floor when you climb out. My Civic hatch sits too for me. Ultimately it's the fault of the auto makers and the manual adjustments not working well . I would rather pay extra for comfy seats than any of this brainless technology for crash avoidance.
My 13 st3 is one of the cars that I have absolutely loved. But, I have to get rid of it, I am a big guy (6ft 2in, 300lbs) and with my daughter's car seat in on the passenger side there is no room for anyone else. The recaro seats are hard on me but I live with it because of my love of this car, it's a dream car for me. But I have to say goodbye sadly.
The ST is made in Europe and the reliability has been good on those cars. The American made/Mexican made Focus has not. So if you gotta get a Focus, get the ST.
I installed the Ford Performance springs on my 2017 Focus ST last week. I'm very happy with them so far, the ride quality is almost identical to stock.
Gjeebs- I have a 17 focus st I want to do the ford performance tune cause I want reliability but I also want to upgrade to a mountune intercooler will it work with the tune? Or no cause with an intercooler u need a tune but not sure if ford Performance tune is calibrated for that just the colder plugs right?
Vipz336 I own a 2017 ST3 and I am also a technician for ford. Any intercooler will work with or without a tune. The only reason a tune will help is to use the added efficiency to its fullest. I have heard good things about the ford performance calibration but it is important to note that a tune from mountune is also warrantable if you are worried about that.
Picked up a ‘14 st2 a few years ago, but traded it in for a super high mileage Wrx hatch. The Wrx is since gone, and I would love to get another FoST st2 st3. I found a ‘17 FoST1 and a ‘14 FiST with recaros. It’s going to be one or the other.
I had a 13 st for 10 yrs. Loved it no real issue excpt my drivers seat got stuck in recline. Had to get a new used one salvage. Still $800. Don’t pull up on curbs too far. I got rearended and it totaled and bought a used 16 St Kona Blue. Having issues with key fob and doors locking. Fun car to drive.
I'm looking to buy a used he said it’s 2013 st2 I bought it stock with 32k on it it’s now at 68k and raising. It lowered on springs and new struts probably 15k miles on them. It has 2.5inch straight pipe from the cat back. Can come with a 3inch catless downpipe and an accessport Got other small mods like sound symposer delete and fswerks short shifter with solid shift cable bushings and solid shift mounts And I also have a Cobb RMM that’s not on the car"" its red and looks clean. I need a daily and drive a 2006 rsx type s. But need a upgrade. Does his car sound ok for a daily. I wanted completely stock but his price and miles are hard to pass up
When talking about tuners I’d say jst is the safest. Brian tunes so many cars which he has the record of most 300whp stock turbo fost and I never hear complaints
I have a 13ST with ST2 package that i recently bought thats race red and first thing im going to do is put the Konig Myth Red Black Custom Rims on it then ill put the flowmater exhaust on it afterwards then go from there on deciding what ill do to it afterwards. The car had 91k on it and got it for 10k here where i live. No dents or scratches on it pretty clean looking car love the way it rides n how smooth it is. Just wanting change rims out to make my car different to stand out more from the others since they all pretty much have the same snowflake wheel. Oh forgot gotten the 1552 front cup spoiler kit and had them painted race red and installed on my front bumper gives it that more aggressive look in the front
@@beetoyah was great deal here in Woodlands Tx couldnt pass it up glad i got it too before they end up not having anymore since they stop making cars now.
Found on road dead? Never heard that one. 'Fix or repair daily' is the usual one. I think lotus has the best acronym though, 'lots of trouble, usually serious'
At the time of this video, did you have any other performance modifications that made you get the ford performance calibration? Or is the calibration something that can be done witb a bone stock ST?
Hi, in 2:13 you mentioned there was a recall for RPM Stall ... If you did the fix or at least know the recall number could you please help me and send me any details ... I'm in Abu Dhabi - UAE and the agency is telling that there is no recall for this issue. I need a prove.
Hellos everyone, I know this might not be right place to ask but I figure I’ll give it a shot. Did anyone have a problem with their dash saying “engine fault service now” message and can’t get rid of it. It would be great if there were any recommendations to solve this on a focus st 2016
For anyone from the UK wondering. The 91 octane fuel he's using is the equivalent of our 97 ron/octane. Shame you guys don't have access to better. Shell Vpower over here is 99ron.
Just picked up a bone stock 2014 ST2 with 43k miles, really as just a daily (I have a Yamaha MT10 for my speed needs). I don't plan on putting any tune on it or any excessive mods, maybe just an exhaust and intake. I recognize they're not meant to be crazy power cars, rather just jack of all trade daily's (comfortable, reasonably fuel efficient yet reasonably quick, good truck space, e.t.c.) I've had my fair share of crazy cars (terminator cobras with around 600whp) and I think it'll be nice to tone it down a bit for a year or so. At least until the used market drops back down.
Anyone have the diesel St by ant chance would like the petrol version but cost way to much to run it Ireland I'm buying 1 soon so someone let me please if ya had diesel version
Just hit 22,000 miles on my ST. Not one stutter along the way, many road trips, and so much fun. I never expected the focus ST to be such a good time and it always surpasses my new passengers expectations. 9/10 for me❤️
@@Gjeebs I live in Georgia but my buddies live in Orlando (450 miles from me) and Im constantly driving down there to visit (about 1-2 times a month) would you say in the LONG RUN am I damaging my ST with those constant miles? I'm 18 I'm relatively new to this car scene and I want my ST to last me.
All tuning is a guessing trial and error game no matter who it’s. Ford just has better access to engineer working tunes because they have the destroy and replace capabilities till they get it right
I have owned my 13 st3 since 2014 and never had issues but to be honest I'm bored with it, not enough horsepower so I'm probably going to try to buy a terminator next and a pick up as a daily.
"Exciting car that's coming out soon" Veloster N? Not going to lie, I should've shopped around for a Focus ST instead of my current Civic Si because I want more car now. At least with the Focus ST, all I would have to worry about is broken parts but it would still keep me excited for another year. Now, I'm waiting for dealers to get some Veloster Ns in so I can finally check them out and eventually get one.
The only thing the fuel would help with is possibly it burns cleaner. That's it. It happens because you are no longer injecting fuel before the intake valve like older fi systems or carburetors. If it has not given you a problem its probably just a luck the tune really makes no difference. Off boost driving is off boost driving it will pretty much act the same with or with out a tune or what tune it has. If anything the Ford performance tune would be the worst. Last I checked it was set at 28psi of boost which uses the most fuel under full throttle. So richer and more carbon.
The carbon build-up occurs on the backside of the intake valves specifically because fuel does not pass through in the intake to get into the cylinder, that's why it's called direct injection. So any fuel or additive designed to clean will make no difference because it is injected directly into the cylinder and never touches the back side of the intake valves. If it really bothers you, you can add port injection, but I wouldn't bother with that, your engine will die from ringland failure before your valves are gummed up to the point of causing issues.
At 05:45 "I still really love this car'....and you haven't taken it to a track??? Dude, you drive a "beautiful woman" every day and you haven't "made love to her"!! wtf?? Get that beauty-and all the cool upgrades you've done to her-and see WHAT SHE REALLY CAN DO! You're not nearly as much in love with her as you're gonna be.
I wish this didn't make me sound so stupid, I currently drive an 09 P71 and thought of trading for a Fiesta or Focus ST until I started hearing horror stories about how messed up the valves got on cars with direct injection and that it was made much worse with the addition of turbochargers. I got the impression that engines like those in the ST models started dying a not too slow death after about 36,000 miles. Yet there are so many positive comments about these cars...
Awesome update man. I have had my '18 FoST since May and still loving it. Hopefully I can get some upgrades in it soon. Be well and have a great new year!
Around 65,000 car should be reliable, i love the car but i preffer slower civic si 2013-2015 because there is no turbo and it is n/a engine which should make 300,000 with no major issues..
Have a 05 focus st. 244,xxx miles. Trouble free just small things light bulbs. Tires brake oil. Recently needed valve cover gasket and a clutch master cylinder. Love my fords.
