I've been wanting to do this for a long time! Finally got the chance. I love having this flashing third brake light on my 2016 Ford Focus ST. In this video I'll show you how I did it and show off what it looks like. This is the Signal Dynamics Back off XP module on my Focus ST.

Forgot to mention that the instructions state that you should disconnect the battery. However, you guys know I'm hard headed though.

I would recommend using liquid electrical tape or something to insulate those connections made. Over time water will leak in and corrode those connections.

Those are the worst splices ever invented. I would never use them. It would be much better to solder the wires and wrap with 33+ tape. You could oat them with liquid electrical tape if you have it before wrapping them in 33+ tape.

European Fords flash their Hazards (four-ways) during hard panic stops. It's programmable in the BCM (Body Control Module) as to whether the car does nothing (like in the US), flashes the Hazards (like in Europe), or flashes the brake lights (not sure where this is used). So if anyone feels brave or tech-y enough, using the FOCCUS and Forscan software, you should be able to edit your car's as-built data to enable it, just like you can enable global window open-close, DRLs etc etc, without needing to buy and fit additional hardware.

I see these alot in the UK but to be legal they must operate as a solid light just like the factory light and only flash when braking hard. The hard breaking action should be what causes the third light to flash and must be operated independently to the main brake switch. Either by a secondary switch further down the pedal throw or via a deceleration activated switch.

Those quick connect wire splices don't hold up to moisture or vibrations. Solder connections are still best.

Any used car/truck/trailer I've bought over the years that used them ultimately had problems because of them.

Mike, Is correct they are junk. Look for 3M butt splices in the wire size you need. They have a dielectric inside them that protects the connections from moisture. If you do not want to try soldering on/near your car. Thanks for the video I wanted to see the device in action and you presented all the information very well. Thanks You.

You need to get on some interior mods next. Hologram projectors for the doors? Illuminated sill? Dash cover? Im counting on you to do something ill.

Great Video man. I just installed the brake light module on my 14 FiST and its cool! But I was just wondering if your USB ports went out. After I installed the brake light module on my 14 FiST, my USB ports have stopped working. Could be a coincidence?

Hey, I don't know if you still check your comments on this video, but I tried installing this on my Focus RS and it only works when the car isn't running, as soon as I start the engine it only stays solid when the brake pedal is pushed. Yours works with the engine running?

Hey so I installed this and now I've got my flashy brake light. Thanks for the walk through! So, now the dumb question... I never noticed until I started messing around with this, but when I was testing with the car off, none of my brake lights worked. When I switched to accessory, I was able to light them up. Is this unique to the Focus? Typically, it doesn't matter if the car is on or off.

After it blinks does it stay solid? I’ve installed a flasher that’s supposed to stay solid after four flashes and it doesn’t.

Vance Hockaday yes this one stays solid. Or you can wire it to blink again after a few seconds

I just got a 2014 ST and my third brake light flashes when I bought it. Is it like this from the factory or could it be something that the previous owner added?

Hmm might be something that the previous owner added. Not sure what spec your's is but the US spec doesn't do it....as far as I know.

Oh that's weird. Mine definitely works with the car on. I'll see it back up at night some times.

The module is holding up just fine. Every now and then I'll see it blinking because of reflections at night. And I'm not too sure if it will. I should work because it's just bypassing the existing wires, but I'm not too sure if it will fit inside the space once done.

isn't even allowed up her xD Even though I never understood why cars don't have different braking light effects in the first place. Would be so much better for safety if there was a difference between light braking and heavy braking. Sometimes you are noticing a bit late that the car in front of you went from a light brake to a heavy brake. If there would be an extra light or whatever or in this case flashing light, you would know straight away he is braking harder, instead of having to notice you coming closer faster than you were befor. It's such a small thing, but would actually help in traffic. But I guess there needs to be a crash here in there for some companies to benefit from somehow.

TechNation I'm from Belgium. We are barely allowed to change anything about the car. Luckely we can still decide what rims we want lol. But for example another exhaust is something I might want to change on the ST as I don't like the looks nor the outdoor sound of it. But there are a lot of things that I need to be aware of, if I don't want to switch them every year for the check-up they do up here. Definitely the noise is often an issue to be legal. That and maybe some extra black accents,like a black line on the sides of the car with ST in it and black side mirrors are like the only things I would like to change. Maybe a few other things in the longterm. But those engine tunes and stuff, not even going to try it, it will probably be illegal up here anyway xD

Mot is UK annual road worthiness check (ministry of transport test), tuv APK is are the European equivalent. There are legislations governing the operation of brake lights that state the new flashing ones must operate as normal and only flash whilst breaking hard, the circuitry to make them flash must operate independently to the main brake lights. Either a second switch further down in the pedal travel or via g sensor or some form of decelerometer. These aftermarket ones flash first every time the brakes are pressed even if just gently breaking which is considered as a distraction.

You can buy a regular 12 volt flasher for $7 and wire it in yourself and it's a lot cheaper and then it stays continuous flashing which legal to your third brake light only. You don't need to spend $37 on this shit
